Book Realizing Teracomputing Proceedings Of The Tenth Ecmwf Workshop On The Use Of High Performance Computers In Meteorology

Download or read book Realizing Teracomputing Proceedings Of The Tenth Ecmwf Workshop On The Use Of High Performance Computers In Meteorology written by Norbert Kreitz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-11-11 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geosciences and in particular numerical weather prediction are demanding the highest levels of available computer power. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, with its experience in using supercomputers in this field, organizes every other year a workshop bringing together manufacturers, computer scientists, researchers and operational users to share their experiences and to learn about the latest developments. This book provides an excellent overview of the latest achievements in and plans for the use of new parallel techniques in meteorology, climatology and oceanography. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)

Book Minding the Weather

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert R. Hoffman
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2023-08-15
  • ISBN : 026254881X
  • Pages : 501 pages

Download or read book Minding the Weather written by Robert R. Hoffman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of research on the psychology of expertise in weather forecasting, drawing on findings in cognitive science, meteorology, and computer science. This book argues that the human cognition system is the least understood, yet probably most important, component of forecasting accuracy. Minding the Weather investigates how people acquire massive and highly organized knowledge and develop the reasoning skills and strategies that enable them to achieve the highest levels of performance. The authors consider such topics as the forecasting workplace; atmospheric scientists' descriptions of their reasoning strategies; the nature of expertise; forecaster knowledge, perceptual skills, and reasoning; and expert systems designed to imitate forecaster reasoning. Drawing on research in cognitive science, meteorology, and computer science, the authors argue that forecasting involves an interdependence of humans and technologies. Human expertise will always be necessary.

Book Planning the Future Space Weather Operations and Research Infrastructure Proceedings of the Phase II Workshop

Download or read book Planning the Future Space Weather Operations and Research Infrastructure Proceedings of the Phase II Workshop written by National Academies Of Sciences Engineeri and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affecting technological systems at a global-scale, space weather can disrupt high-frequency radio signals, satellite-based communications, navigational satellite positioning and timing signals, spacecraft operations, and electric power delivery with cascading socioeconomic effects resulting from these disruptions. Space weather can also present an increased health risk for astronauts, as well as aviation flight crews and passengers on transpolar flights. In 2019, the National Academies was approached by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Science Foundation to organize a workshop that would examine the operational and research infrastructure that supports the space weather enterprise, including an analysis of existing and potential future measurement gaps and opportunities for future enhancements. This request was subsequently modified to include two workshops, the first (Phase I) of which occurred in two parts on June 16-17 and September 9-11, 2020. The Phase II workshop occurred on April 11-14, 2022, with sessions on agency updates, research needs, data science, observational and modeling needs, and emerging architectures relevant to the space weather research community and with ties to operational needs. This publication summarizes the presentation and discussion of that workshop.

Book Floods and Landslides Integrated Risk Assessment

Download or read book Floods and Landslides Integrated Risk Assessment written by Riccardo Casale and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the state of the art of natural disasters like floods and landslides, highlighting the possibility of safe and correct land planning and management by means of a global approach to territory. In fact, the events deriving from slope dynamics (gravitational phenomena) and fluvial dynamics (floods) are commonly triggered by the same factor (heavy rainfall), occur at the same time and are closely related. For this reason, this book analyses floods and slope stability phenomena as different aspects of the same dynamic system: the drainage basin.
