Not only was the chemical work done in the State, but the drawings, cuts, printing, binding and the paper used, are all the products Of North Carolina skill and industry. The work of the Station has only appeared, hitherto, in fragmentary, detached portions, from no one of which could a just estimate of its value or operations be made. In the following pages will be found as complete a review of two years' work as space would allow. In looking back today over my two years and a half of labor in North Carolina, there is not a single shadow over the prospect. I have received from the hundreds of farmers whom I have met, nothing but encouragement. I have been aided by a majority of the papers in the State by kind words or sound advice, while from those journals which have criticised the work of the Station I have learned much that I trust has been, or shall be, utilized for the good of the State. I have nothing but grateful feelings to express towards the Board of Agriculture, under whose wise super vision I have worked, and to the Trustees, President and Faculty of the University for their interest and co-operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Eighth Annual Report of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station: For the Year Ended June 30, 1915 This report covers the Work of the Station from July 1, 1914, to June 30, 1915. During this period, plans for carrying on experimental work under the Joint Committee for Agricultural Work of the State Department of Agriculture and the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts were perfected and put into operation. The Extension Service, which is also under the control of the Joint Committee and which was formerly a division of the Station, was organized as a separate ser vice. It is now being conducted in close cooperation with the Station Workers and, because of this close association, is better enabled to take the facts found by experiments to the farmers of the State. All work under the Joint Committee is carried on in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture. Very few changes in the staff have occurred, and these have all been of a minor nature. During the year another branch station has been added to the chain of substations over the State. This is the Washington County Farm, located in the black land district of the Coastal Plain. Studies 'have been inaugurated on this farm in regard to soil treatment, fertility investigations and variety tests. The importance of this station can hardly be overestimated on account of the many acres of land in N o-rth Carolina yet to be reclaimed and put under cultivation. Improve ments to the value of have been made to the property of the Station. Most of these improvements have been done on the branch stations in the form of new buildings. The undertakings in which the various Divisions and workers are engaged are given in the reports from the different Divisions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixtieth Annual Report of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station: For the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1937, Progress Report for Year Ending December 1, 1937 The Department of Agricultural Economics posts the monthly labor and cost data and at the close of each year prepares a summary statement showing the cost of each crop produced, the cost of producing milk, and also the cost of maintaining the dairy herd. The department also renders assistance to the other cooperating departments in developing ways and means of reducing costs, and in conducting the experiment in such a way as to reflect actual farm operations. A summary of the operations of the experiment has been prepared for each year from 1929 to 1936, inclusive. NO crops were produced in 1933 because the land was divided into a new field arrangement, and this was completed too late for any crops to be grown. The following table shows the yield per acre of various crops since the project was started in 1928. (r. E. L. Greene and C. D. Grinnells.) A study of peach orchard management. - This project, which has been active since 1927, has been completed, and the results will appear soon in a Station bulletin.
