Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tent Life in the Holy Land I visited the sacred soil, as a pilgrim, seeking mine own pleasure. I went where it pleased me. I acted as it pleased me, yielding, with delicious license, to the whim of every passing hour. I prayed or I laughed; I knelt or I turned my back; I wept or I sang; and when I sang it was now a song of sinful humanity and now a grand old monkish hymn, to which my voice made the moonlit streets of Jerusalem ring.as I strolled along them, or which I sent oating over the holy waves of. Galilee. I have written my book even as I traveled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tent and Saddle Life in the Holy Land Our chief interest in the Holy Land arises from its association with the Bible. The country once trodden by the patriarchs, judges, kings and prophets, and by the Saviour himself and the apostles, cannot fail to attract the attention of travellers and readers in each generation. Besides this the face of the country is diversified, and the scenery of more than passing interest. After our passage tickets had been purchased a rumor of the outbreak of the plague, on the shores of the Black Sea, threatened to interfere with our journey. The consequent falling off in the number of travellers eventually proved an advantage to our small party of three clergymen, since we enjoyed quite a monopoly of the arrangements made for a larger number, giving us a choice of guides, provisions and horses. We were also more free to make little excursions aside from the main lines of travel, and could obtain full replies to our questions from the dragomans. A kind Providence preserved us from the rumored pestilence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Everyday Life in the Holy Land Classic Reprint

Download or read book Everyday Life in the Holy Land Classic Reprint written by James Neil and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Life in the Holy Land Thirdly, this life is absolutely uniform. From the far South of Egypt to the far North Of Syria all things are alike. Every piece Of furniture, every agricultural or horti cultural implement, every manufacture, the building and arrangement Of every house - all is Of one pattern. Every work Of the same kind is done everywhere in the same way. Variety is charming is a Western proverb which the Orient utterly repudiates. The spirit Of the East calls, in all things, for a stereotyped and monotonous uniformity. If you have seen one pattern of inkpot, pen, table, coffee cup, brazier, ewer and basin, shirt, Cloak, girdle, head-dress, footgear, you have seen all. NO different modes, no passing fashions, change, or ever have Changed, the primitive features of Pales tine life. To Western minds, and in an age like ours, this seems little less than a standing miracle. Thus wonderfully has the power and goodness Of God afiorded us, through out the lands Of the Bible, a living, accurate, exhaustive, divinely preserved commentary on its inspired pages! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wonderfully original and compelling study, essential for understanding the complex relations between the US and the nations and peoples of the Mideast. McAlister argues powerfully that American interests in the Mideast range far beyond the realm of foreign policy to become of paramount importance to the creation of American culture in the post World War II era. . . . A model for those interested in the interconnections of culture and foreign policy in an era of globalization. An engrossing read."--Amy Kaplan, author of The Social Construction of American Realism "Melani McAlister has written a marvelous book that draws together a vast array of materials from the media, archives, scholarly sources, and popular culture, interpreting it through her rich knowledge of cultural studies. Scholars in many fields--American studies, sociology, religious studies, political science, media studies, among others--will want to read this lively and engaging book."--Robert Wuthnow, author of After Heaven: Spirituality in America Since the 1950s, and Creative Spirituality: The Way of the Artist "A fascinating and completely original analysis of the relation between culture and foreign policy. . . this book casts entirely new light on US military, financial, and emotional investments in the Middle East. Conservative Christian sensibilities, television, Biblical epics, Black Power, and a host of gender-related representations--these and other factors all played a part in the shaping of American foreign policy in ways that have never before been noticed. No historian of twentieth-century American culture or politics should miss this brilliant book!"--Gail Bederman, author of Manliness and Civilization: A Cultural History of Gender and Race in the US, 1880-1917 "Diplomatic historians are now turning to Edward Said's Orientalism to explore the cultural dimensions of 20th Century America's representations of the Middle East. They are too late! Melani McAlister develops a "post-orientalist" approach to U.S. culture, foreign policy, and identity. Hers is also the first book ever to recognize that African -Americans matter to such a project. Epic Encounters is a blockbuster of a book."--Robert Vitalis, author of When Capitalists Collide: Business Conflict and the End of Empire in Egypt
