Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the salts contained in sea water are trapped in sea ice upon freezing. They form liquid and solid inclusions in a systematic pattern. The amount depends upon temperature and salinity. A detailed table of phase relations is given and a general theory is derived to show how the internal cavities may affect the strength of sea ice. The general theory leads to specific models. The principle of ring tensile strength tests is explained and a series for evaluation is given. Test data lead to a substantiation of theoretical principles and to an illustration of several hypotheses concerning the effect of solid salt inclusions upon strength. Observed sea ice phenomena are explained on the basis of internal structure. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Physics of Ice covers the state of knowledge regarding the structure, properties, occurrence, and movement of ice. This book is composed of eight chapters, and begins with an introduction and in the fundamental aspects of ice, including pure water freezing, circulation, occurrence, classification, and importance of ice. The subsequent chapters describe the properties, structure, freezing, and composition of sea ice and ice drift. These topics are followed by discussions on the crystallographic features, and mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of ice. The concluding chapter examines the factor influencing ice growth and decay. This book is directed toward physicists and researchers in ice-related fields.

Book excerpt: Ice accreted on high-speed rotors operating in supercooled fog can be thrown off by centrifugal force, creating severe unbalance and dangerous projectiles. A simple force balance analysis indicates that the strength of accreted ice and its adhesive strength can be obtained by measuring the thickness of the accretion, the location of the separation, the rotor speed, and the density. Such an analysis was applied to field and laboratory observations of self-shedding events. The results agree reasonably well with other observations. (Author).

Download or read book Physicochemical Aspects of Polymer Surfaces written by K. L. Mittal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This and its companion Volume 2 document the proceedings of the International Symposium on Physicochemical Aspects of Polymer Surfaces held under the auspices of the American Chemical Society in New York City, August 23-28, 1981. This event was sponsored by the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry and the Divisions of Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry, and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry were the cosponsors. The study of polymer surfaces is important from both funda mental and applied points of view. The applications of polymers are legion and wheresoever polymers are used, their surface char acteristics, inter alia, are of great concern and importance; and the areas where polymers find applications range from microelec tronics to prosthetics. In the last decade or so, the availabil ity of various sophisticated surface analytical techniques, par ticularly ESCA, has been a boon in enhancing our knowledge of polymer surfaces. This Symposium was designed to bring together scientists and technologists interested in all aspects of polymer surfaces, to provide a forum for discussion of various ramifications of poly mer surfaces, to discover the latest developments, to provide an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas, and to highlight areas which are in astate of rapid development and those which need intensified efforts. If the comments from attendees is any barometer of the success of an event, then this Symposium was a grand success and the above objectives were amply fulfilled.
