Book Nonlinear Response of Boron Aluminum Angleplied Laminates Under Cyclic Tensile Loading

Download or read book Nonlinear Response of Boron Aluminum Angleplied Laminates Under Cyclic Tensile Loading written by CC. Chamis and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear response of boron/aluminum angleplied laminates subjected to cyclic loads was investigated. A procedure is outlined and criteria are proposed which can be used to assess the nonlinear response. The procedure consists of testing strategically selected laminate configurations and analyzing the results using composite mechanics. Results from the investigation show that the contributions to nonlinear behavior are due to: premature random fiber breaks where the ply orientation angle (POA) is small relative to the load direction, ply relative rotation (PRR) at intermediate values of the POA, and nonlinear aluminum matrix behavior at large values of the orientation angle. Premature fiber breaks result in progressively more complaint material; large PRR result in progressively suffer material; and, pronounced matrix nonlinear behavior results in no significant change in the modulus of the initial portion of the stress-strain curve.

Book Effect of Temperature and Strain Rate on the Tensile Properties of Boron Aluminum and Boron Epoxy Composites

Download or read book Effect of Temperature and Strain Rate on the Tensile Properties of Boron Aluminum and Boron Epoxy Composites written by DA. Meyn and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of strain rates from 8 x 10-5 to 0.4 s-1 on tensile strengths and moduli of 6-ply 6061 aluminum-46.5 percent boron at temperatures up to 1000°F (537°C) and of 10-ply unidirectional and cross-ply epoxy-50 percent boron composites at temperatures up to 500°F (260°C) have been measured. Longitudinal properties were reduced moderately at high temperatures, and were only slightly higher at high strain rates than at low strain rates. Transverse properties decreased rapidly with temperature, and were either unaffected by high strain rates, particularly at low temperatures, or were substantially increased, especially at high temperatures, in both aluminum and epoxy systems.

Book Tensile Creep of Angle Plied Boron Epoxy Laminates

Download or read book Tensile Creep of Angle Plied Boron Epoxy Laminates written by DJ. Chwirut and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile creep tests were performed at 75°F (24°C) and 300°F (149°C) on 26 specimens cut from ±30-deg and ±45-deg laminates of boron/epoxy composite material to characterize the creep behavior of these materials. A linear viscoelastic laminate theory proposed by McQuillen was compared with the experimental data for the tests run at 75°F (24°C). The predicted creep strains differed greatly from the measured values, indicating that the linear theory is not applicable to laminates with these filament orientations. A general creep equation of the form ? = k?mtn was fitted to the experimental data with excellent correlation. The stress exponents was fitted to the experimental data with excellent correlation. The stress exponents m varied from 1.79 to 5.17 for the four series of tests, thus characterizing the nonlinear behavior of boron/epoxy laminates with these filament orientations.

Book Off Axis and Transverse Tensile Properties of Boron Reinforced Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Off Axis and Transverse Tensile Properties of Boron Reinforced Aluminum Alloys written by Hancock, JR. and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tension specimens of boron reinforced 7075 and 6061 aluminum were tested at angles of 0, 30, and 90 deg to the unidirectionally aligned filaments. Metallurgical structures in the matrix and at interfaces were correlated with stress-strain curves, with acoustic emission from boron filament breakage during the tests, and with fractographic studies. Differences in composite strength after various heat treatments were attributed to changes in the properties of the matrix rather than to any difference in properties of the filament-matrix interface. Transmission electron microscopy of boron/ 7075 aluminum composites revealed (1) precipitate segregation to interfaces for all heat treatments, (2) that subzero thermal treatments provide a new means of developing desired microstructures in composites, and (3) the presence of a narrow surface layer in the filaments in boron/7075 aluminum composites. This surface layer is believed to be a result of diffusion during composite fabrication.

Book Development and Application of Nondestructive Methods for Predicting Mechanical Properties of Advanced Reinforced Nonmetallic Composites

Download or read book Development and Application of Nondestructive Methods for Predicting Mechanical Properties of Advanced Reinforced Nonmetallic Composites written by C. H. Hastings and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report concerns itself with a detailed evaluation and development of ultrasonic interval velocity measurement technique. Results indicate that it is a practical and powerful tool applicable to the evaluation of boron/epoxy laminates for structural hardware components. Best results are achieved in the 0 and 90 degree directions of the laminates studied. Unbalanced laminates lead to greater errors in the 45 degree direction. Measurements off-angle with respect to reinforcing filaments do not now seem to be reliable. Based on interval velocity measurements, correlations have been developed for modulus calculation and tensile strength prediction. Accuracies appear to be better than tensile tests for modulus (less scatter) and as good as tensile tests for strength determination. Yield strengths did not appear to be predictable because of excessive scatter in the densile data. Degradation of boron/epoxy laminates studied, because of prior tensile loading did not exist.
