Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tennyson as a Religious Teacher A word of explanation is, perhaps, not unnecessary as to the method pursued in the following pages. Many of these may appear only remotely to deal with Tennyson's position, and mainly to be occupied with the comments and suggestions of the author. The chapters on Vastness, Evolution, Immortality, and others, may seem but inadequate attempts to discuss contemporary problems, with only scattered allusions to the work of Tennyson. But the mere extraction from the work of any great author of certain categorical propositions is a dismal though easy task. To place these propositions in their correct relation to the changing thought of any given time requires a clear explanation of the exact meaning of the theories and the terms so glibly utilised, and so readily misunderstood. Such a task is as much harder as it is better worth the doing. From one point of view my treatment of these problems will seem too full; from another, it will appear altogether inadequate. A book, instead of a chapter, on each of these questions would but give a bare discussion of outlines. Yet, perhaps, even this slight sketch may contribute towards a better understanding of the problems which confronted Tennyson and his contemporaries - problems of an age "which already in its methods of thought, its difficulties, and its ideals, is rapidly passing away." Amid much that appears unsatisfactory in the literature that has accumulated around Tennyson's poetry, I may mention certain writings that, judged by however high a standard, must command respect and admiration. Book Lord Tennyson and the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lord Tennyson and the Bible Classic Reprint written by George Lester and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Tennyson and the Bible Tennyson and Koheleth - in Dr. Plumptre's Ecclesiastes, in the Cambridge Bible for Schools. It is an admirable example of exact work in this department. In it the learned author (whose recent decease has occasioned widespread regret) traces the parallelism of Tennyson in the In Memoriam, The Vision of Sin, The Two Voices, and The Palace of Art, with the Confessions of the Debater, whom he supposes to be an Alexandrian Jew, who, writing about 200 years before the Christian era, adopted the dramatic personation of Solomon's character as a form of authorship. The most important contribution, however, that has yet been made to the study of Tennyson's knowledge and use of the Bible is the work Of an American divine - the Rev. Henry Van Dyke, D.D., of New York City. It appears as an appendix to a' volume entitled The Poetry of Tennyson. The Biblical. Allusions there given number 282. The. Author appends a note, in which he says, This list is probably very far from being complete. With the joy of a genuine explorer, Dr. Van Dyke exults in the fact that the delight of 'fresh woods and pastures new' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Teaching of Tennyson Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Tennyson Classic Reprint written by John Oates and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Tennyson Has Tennyson any message, or is he merely "an idle singer of an empty day"? Is he content to leave us in admiration of his beautiful art without a guiding gleam for the conduct of life? Does he give us any great verities upon which we may stand, as upon rock, in the midst of the surging voices of doubt? Does he sing of the ultimate man - the final triumph of the race; or docs he wail a requiem over lost ideals, and a creed out-worn? By careful classification of the related poems I have striven, in the following pages, to extract the teaching of the poet. We shall find that he not only gives an ethical law for the guidance of life, but an answer to those deeper questions that utter their tremulous voices in the shrine of the soul. Book Alfred Tennyson

Download or read book Alfred Tennyson written by Laurence W. Mazzeno and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Tennyson was a poet all his life, writing more than a thousand works in virtually every poetic genre. Considered by his Victorian contemporaries the pre-eminent poet of the age, he has become a canonical figure who is widely read and studied today. Consequently, his poems appear on the syllabi of both survey courses in Victorian literature as well as upper-division and graduate-level topics courses that cover Victorian studies or address subjects such as environmental studies, religion, elegiac poetry, and Arthurian literature. This companion makes Tennyson's poetry accessible to contemporary readers by identifying some of the formal elements of the poems, highlighting their relevance to Tennyson's Victorian contemporaries, and explaining their enduring appeal and value. Entries in the companion, organized alphabetically, provide essential details about Tennyson's most anthologized poems, offer suggestions for reading and interpretation, and elucidate unfamiliar historical and literary allusions. Additional entries, a biography of Tennyson, and a selected bibliography of recent criticism offer information about the people, places, events, and issues that influenced Tennyson or were important to him and his contemporaries.
