  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book PreachersNSneakers written by Ben Kirby and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founder of the phenomenon social media account PreachersNSneakers tackles how faith, capitalism, consumerism, and (wannabe) celebrity have collided and asks both believers and nonbelievers alike: how much is too much? What started as a joke account on Instagram has turned into a movement. Through this provocative project, the founder of PreachersNSneakers is helping thousands of Jesus followers wrestle with the inevitable dilemmas created by our Western culture obsessed with image and entertainment. In PreachersNSneakers: Authenticity in an Age of For-Profit Faith and (Wannabe) Celebrities, Ben Kirby approaches many of the difficult questions plaguing countless Christians’ minds, presenting experiences and input from both sides of difficult questions, such as: Should pastors grow wealthy off of religion, and can their churches ever be too large? Do we really believe that divine blessings are monetary, or is that just religious wallpaper to hide our own greed? Is there space in Christendom for celebrities like Kanye and Bieber to exist without distorting the good news? What about this: Is it wrong for someone—even wrong for author Ben Kirby—to call out faith leaders online and leverage “cancel culture” to affect change? PreachersNSneakers will navigate these challenging questions and many more with humor, wit, candor, and a few never-before-published hijinks. Each chapter will explore the various sides of the debate, holding space for us to make up our own minds. This book is not about finding the perfect, “right” way to do something, but instead learning how to articulate what we believe, why we believe it, and what to do when we want to stand up against cultural norms. This book will doubtlessly become a staple for church small groups, college ministries, and book clubs, emboldening struggling believers who want to live a more genuine faith. After all, the Lord works in mysterious colorways.

A half-century after Title IX legislation leveled the playing field for women and girls, the time has come to celebrate the lives and careers of some of the most notable groundbreaking women in sports, while also encouraging future generations to make history of their own. In a League of Her Own: Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports shares the stories of nineteen impactful women in sports, including Billie Jean King, Danica Patrick, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Laila Ali, Jeanie Buss, and Mary Lou Retton. These iconic women open up to Bonnie-Jill Laflin, herself a trailblazer as the first and only female NBA scout, about the sobering realities females face in the sports world and the many obstacles they had to overcome. But they also celebrate the amazing support they received from colleagues, friends, family, and the women who came before them, and impart their own desires to inspire young women through their stories. In a League of Her Own gives these remarkable women a voice to share their experiences across the sports industry. They discuss such issues as the pressures of social media, the sexism that still exists in boardrooms and locker rooms, and their hopes for closer equality in the sports space. Their journeys are each unique, but together, they have changed the face of sports and culture forever.

Book The Lifestyle Puzzle

Download or read book The Lifestyle Puzzle written by Henrick Vejlgaard and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author describes the emergence of a radically new type of tribalism, one based not on the fixity of age-old ethnic tradition but on the fluidity of diverse lifestyle choices being made by contemporary individuals. --Stephen Bertman, PhD, author of Hyperculture and Cultural AmnesiaAmerican society is more diverse than ever. A country that used to think of itself as the great melting pot may soon be calling itself the great lifestyle buffet. With increasing affluence, more and more Americans are in a position to choose whatever lifestyle most appeals to them. The result is that the national landscape has become an intricate mosaic of varying styles, self-expressions, and ways of life. Even the distinction between majority and minority is starting to blur.Is there any pattern to this ever-shifting kaleidoscope of identities? Social scientist and communications specialist Henrik Vejlgaard puts the pieces together into a coherent picture in this fascinating study of American diversity. Applying the astute pattern-recognition skills that he demonstrated in his previous book, the critically acclaimed Anatomy of a Trend, Vejlgaard examines how we transform our identities into practical everyday living-into our lifestyle.Going beyond the usual markers of identity-race, ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, income level, etc-he focuses on modes of communicating group identity nonverbally through consumer choices, clothing fashions, personal color choices, adornments, accessories, logos, signs, and symbols. Curiously, what emerges from his analysis is a pattern as ancient as human culture itself-a new form of tribalism. He foresees this trend continuing so that by the end of the twenty-first century there will be less identification with nation-states and ethnic groups and more small-group identification. As globalization and mass communication continue to link us together, we may all become so used to diversity that the idea of conflict based on national identity distinctions may seem antiquated.A book of remarkable insights, The Lifestyle Puzzle will have great appeal to readers interested in popular culture, social change, and consumer tastes.Henrik Vejlgaard, M.A., M.Sc. (Copenhagen, Denmark), is the author of Anatomy of a Trend, the groundbreaking book about how changes in style and taste take place. Combining a background of social science and communication, he is a master of recognizing patterns where others see only chaos. He has lectured on lifestyle and trend sociology at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Arhus, both in Denmark. Anatomy of a Trend has been published in more than thirty countries and translated into, among other languages, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Italian. Previously he has written three books in Danish on lifestyle and trend sociology. Visit Henrik Vejlgaard online at www.henrikvejlgaard.com.

Book Lifestyle and Social Structure

Download or read book Lifestyle and Social Structure written by Michael E. Sobel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lifestyle and Social Structure: Concepts, Definitions, Analyses is devoted the relationship between lifestyle and social structure. The book begins by constructing a meaningful concept of lifestyle in order to understand and model this relationship. The general formulation of the concept hinges on the descriptive word style, defined as ""any distinctive, and therefore recognizable way in which an act is performed or an artifact made or ought to be performed and made."" After developing the implications of the definition, lifestyle is defined, by analogy, as ""any distinctive, and therefore recognizable mode of living."" The notion of social structure is then introduced, arguing that structural differentiation engenders lifestyle differentiation. The remainder of the work is concerned primarily with the modeling of this relationship using data from the 1972-1973 Survey of Consumer Expenditures, and with the concept of stylistic unity. Key topics discussed include the relationship between the theory of lifestyle differentiation and modern economic utility theory; psychographic notions of lifestyle; and the relationships between lifestyle and other key sociological concepts (stratification, alienation). The concept of lifestyle should be of interest to a broad range of applied and theoretical researchers.

Charismatic athletes such as Michael Jordan, Lance Armstrong, Martina Navratilova and Tiger Woods are analyzed in psycho-biographical profiles that focus on the underlying motivations and behaviors of these preeminent personalities rather than on what they achieved. Book Creating a Lifestyle Medicine Center

Download or read book Creating a Lifestyle Medicine Center written by Jeffrey I. Mechanick and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the groundbreaking work Lifestyle Medicine (2016), this unique new book bridges the gap between theory and practice by providing detailed information on the real-world development and creation of a Lifestyle Medicine Center, whether independently or as part of an established medical program or department. Part one sets the stage by establishing the rationale for creating a Lifestyle Medicine Center as well as the medical and economic burden it seeks to alleviate. The construction of the physical facility and all of the myriad details of the program and its key players are covered in part two, from the structural to the aesthetic, including informatics, developing patient resources and education tools, current technologies and applications, the role of the dietitian and exercise physiologist, inpatient consultation, the importance of community engagement, and more. Part three is comprised of case studies of existing, successful Lifestyle Medicine Centers across the country, with detailed descriptions of their history, development, programs and challenges. Chapters are supported with plentiful figures, tables and useful links. The burden of chronic disease in the U.S. and globally is growing, with pervasive direct and indirect multi-scale adverse effects on health and well-being, economics, and quality of life. Notwithstanding the remarkable progress in biomedical technology, the role of lifestyle medicine in managing chronic disease in a preventive care model is paramount; however, the relevant and effective education in lifestyle medicine is lacking. Translating the theory into action steps, instantiated by case studies with critical interpretations and problem-solving tools, Creating a Lifestyle Medicine Center is the go-to resource for family and primary care physicians, internal medicine physicians, and all clinical specialties interested in planning and developing a lifestyle medicine program.

Book The Whole Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Stine
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2019-01-29
  • ISBN : 1501151916
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Whole Life written by David Stine and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by 1 Thessalonians 5:23, this new book from Pastor David Stine focuses on the three parts of your being—the spirit, the soul, and the body—and shows how you can experience a balanced and more fulfilled life when you take care of all three. Pastor David Stine was the head of a growing church in the nation’s capital. He was seeing exponential church growth and reaching hearts and minds for God. But inside, he felt spiritually dry. He was burnt out. His health suffered, and his preaching became uninspired. Then, one day he read 1 Thessalonians 5:23 in a way he never had before. The verse, he now saw, clearly indicated that were three parts to the human self—the spirit, the soul, and the physical body. He had only been focusing on one part and realized his life was seriously out of balance with the way God intended. As soon as Pastor Stine began to focus on his emotional well-being and physical health in addition to his spiritual fitness, everything changed. He began to see that all three elements are interconnected and necessary for a vibrant Christian life. Divided into three sections, The Whole Life is a practical guide to leading an empowered and balanced life. The Spiritual Formation section discusses the importance of Prayer, the need to read scripture regularly, and the necessity of having a God-sized dream to guide you. The Soul Care section covers your mind, your emotions, and your desires, while the Body Health sections discusses nutrition, exercise, and rest. In each section, Pastor Stine helps you identify where you are thriving and where you are depriving yourself so that you can achieve a healthy whole body and, in turn, a whole life. Providing practical and inspiring ways to feed and nurture yourself, Pastor Stine guides you to discover how you, too, can have a whole, balanced life in Christ.

Book Acing Depression

Download or read book Acing Depression written by Cliff Richey and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicling the tumultuous life of the original bad boy of tennis, this engaging memoir describes one man's public battle with clinical depression. Cliff Richey was best known for the 1970 season in which he won the Grand Prix, the Davis Cup, and was first in the American tennis ranking. He was also well known for his tantrums and boorish behavior that served to mask an internal, dark struggle. Describing torturous days in which he would place black trash bags on the windows and lay in bed crying for hours, this brutally honest narrative stresses that depression is a mental disorder that can affect anyone. Documenting his 10 year fight for control of his mind, aided by antidepressant medication, the determination and strength that afforded him the nickname of "The Bull" is highlighted. Expressing the joy of feeling stable for the first time in his life, this deeply moving story of nightmare and redemption serves to encourage and inspire anyone whose life is touched by mental illness.
