Book How Lives Change

Download or read book How Lives Change written by Himanshu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development economics is about understanding how and why lives change. How Lives Change: Palanpur, India, and Development Economics studies a single village in a crucially important country to illuminate the drivers of these changes, why some people do better or worse than others, and what influences mobility and inequality. How Lives Change draws on seven decades of detailed data collection by a team of dedicated development economists to describe the evolution of Palanpur's economy, its society, and its politics. The emerging story of integration of the village economy with the outside world is placed against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming India and, in turn, helps to understand the transformation. It puts development economics into practice to assess its performance and potential in a unique and powerful way to show how the development of one village since India's independence can be set in the context of the entire country's story. How Lives Change sets out the role of, and scope for, public policy in shaping the lives of individuals. It describes how changes in Palanpur's economy since the late 1950s were initially driven by the advance of agriculture through land reforms, the expansion of irrigation and the introduction of "green revolution" technologies. Since the mid-1980s, newly emerging off-farm opportunities in nearby towns and outside agriculture became the key driver of growth and change, profoundly influencing poverty, income mobility, and inequality in Palanpur. Village institutions are shown to have evolved in subtle but clear ways over time, both shaping and being shaped by economic change. Individual entrepreneurship and initiative is found to play a critical role in driving and responding to the forces of change; and yet, against a backdrop of real economic growth and structural transformation, this book shows that human development outcomes have shown only weak progress and remain stubbornly resistant to change.

Book Tenancy in South Asia

Download or read book Tenancy in South Asia written by Inderjit Singh and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many people argue that tenurial systems in South Asia hinder technological innovation in agriculture and prevent the benefits of such innovation from reaching the tenant, the author of this paper rejects such thinking. In this paper taken from his research on the institutional structures and relationships that shape South Asia's rural economy, the author examines tenancy in South Asia and challenges the claims that landholding systems and structures are the prime source of the subcontinent's agricultural woes. He contends that the adoption of Green Revolution technologies has increased the demand for labor and boosted real agricultural wages. The ensuing agricultural growth has broken down many institutional, social, and cultural barriers previously facing the poor. This growth, when combined with measures to increase small farm productivity and wage employment, alleviates rural poverty. The author sees radical reforms as quick and disruptive solutions to the problems of the rural poor. The real priorities for policymakers are measures to speed agricultural growth and to provide the physical and institutional infrastructure needed to sustain it.

Book Lands and Tenants in South India

Download or read book Lands and Tenants in South India written by M. Atchi Reddy and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book raises serious doubts about much of the accepted wisdom regarding the relative bargaining powers of landlords and tenants. Using unpublished data from the 1850s onwards, it shows how tenancy has helped in a slow but smooth transfer of land from absentee landlords to tenants and other cultivators, often gving them an upper hand.

Book The Great Ascent

Download or read book The Great Ascent written by Inderjit Singh and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is the grim reality for some 400 million people - mostly small farmers and agricultural laborers - in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. To remedy the problem, South Asian governments and international agencies have focused on raising the productivity of small farms and increasing opportunities for rural employment. This strategy, however, has long been criticized for doing the poor more harm than good. The author challenges that pessimistic view by critically reviewing a wealth of evidence from recent academic literature and the World Bank's operational experience. He shows that rapid agricultural growth has benefited all classes of the poor and that the "great ascent" from poverty to a more materially rewarding life has begun. A variety of programs intended to help the poor directly are examined in detail. Research, extension, and training activities are evaluated for their effectiveness in promoting the adoption of high-yielding varieties of cereal, spreading new farming technology, encouraging multiple cropping, and increasing the cultivation of high-value crops. The author also considers programs in dairying, poultry farming, commercial fishing, and forestry and argues that policymakers have neglected these potentially profitable activities. Finally, he discusses the dismal failure of land reforms in reducing poverty.
