Book Ten Years Practical Experience in Grape and Small Fruit Culture Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Years' Practical Experience in Grape and Small Fruit Culture There are a good many farmers and small land owners land who are of the opinion that a soil especially fit for grape growing is required from the commencement. This is erroneous. Every dryish soil that will grow good corn, or potatoes, is good enough. Vines are to be cultivated with success throughout the entire Indian corn-growing region, on the heaviest soils and in the lightest gravel, on the rocky hill-sides of New England and in the alluvial bottom lands of the West, from Maine to California. In every one of the five principal grape-growing regions of the Union, namely, the Ohio Valley (Cincinnati), Lake Shore (Lake Erie), Pleasant Valley (New York), Hermann (Missouri), and California regions, six years vine culture has not very seldom enhanced the value and price of ordinary farm land from $50 to $500 per acre, but it has never lessened its worthiness and market price. Vineyards are foremost in the class of improved lands, and their superiority, as far as rentability is concerned, cannot be doubted. In this respect, I would say, like the author of "My Vineyard at Lakeview," (New York, 1866, Orange Judd & Co.), to every one who is the owner of a farm, or even of a garden of the smallest dimensions: "Try a few vines; the task may lead to more successful results than you have any conception of." And why? There is no plant in existence like the grapevine to adapt itself so well to all sorts of localities, even to such as where fruit-trees, flowers, corn, potatoes, etc., find no foothold. The principles of its cultivation are plain and very easily practiced, and there is indeed no difficulty hidden under the surface of any vine-growing soil. A little care, a little labor, - much pleasure, and little disappointment. That's all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Grape Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Grape Culture Classic Reprint written by George C. Butz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture The grape is one of the most satisfactory fruits to be grown upon the home plot of uhatever dimensions, and the fruit grower in Penn sylvania will find a vineyard an excellent producer of income. A single vine near a house is a horticultural ornament and a source of much pleasure when the fruit is ripe. A grape arbor multiplies the advantages, and will yield fruit for jellies. Jams and the table for a family. More to be desired is the small vineyard of 50 to 100 vines with varieties that ripen early and late, furnishing ripe, fruit from the first of August to the first of December, of the several colors and flavors of our modern varieties. The grape thrives in a variety of soils, so that no farm home and few others need to be deprived of this wholesome fruit. The notion that onlv experts can grow grapes is erroneous. Most of the grape growers began without experience or knowledge of grape culture and have found the work easy and the returns encouraging. This bulletin is prepared with a view to the needs and instruction of the beginner and amateur in grape culture as well as for the guidance of the commercial grower, who mav find here some suggestions that will be helpful in the midst of the grape troubles that arise. The expert needs no assistance and the writer will be pleased to have his criticism of this publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scuppernong Grape, Its History and Mode of Cultivation: With a Short Treatise on the Manufacture of Wine From It As our labor system has been entirely ruined by the United States Government, it becomes necessary for us to adapt means of gaining a livelihood whereby the former amount of labor required can be dispensed with. As one of the means of ao complishing this end, we lay before our Southern friends this little work, which, by lapse of time, we have no doubt, will need modifying in many particulars. But having been a resi dent of the State of Georgia for nearly thirty years, and having had some experience with this Grape for ten or twelve years past, we have presumed to place our views, founded on experi. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hyatt's Hand-Book of Grape Culture There is, perhaps, no employment more agreeable, or more remunerative, than the culture Of the vine. Its origin dates far back into the remote ages of antiquity; and it must have flour iehed in the garden Of Eden; and it seems not to have been a forbidden fruit, like the apple. And to Adam, God said: Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face Of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit Of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold it was very good. Gen. I.: 29, 31. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of American Grape Growing Classic Reprint written by U. P. Hedrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of American Grape-Growing Seventy-nine books on grapes enrich the pomology of North America, not counting numerous state and national publications. Pomological writers in America have been partial to the grape, for other fruits do not fare nearly so well. Twenty - two books are devoted to the strawberry, fourteen to the apple, to the peach nine, cranberry eight, plum five, pear nine, quince two, logan'berry one, while the cherry, raspberry, and blackberry are not once separated from other fruits in special books. Thus, though a comparative newcomer among the fruits of the country, the grape has been singled out for a treatise more times than all other fruits of temperate climates combined seventy-nine books on the grape, seventy on all other fruits. This statement of partiality does not lead to an apology for a new book on the grape. There is urgent need for a new book. But three of the seventy-nine treatises on this fruit are con temporary, and all but one, a handbook on training, are records from vanished minds. Methods change so rapidly and varieties multiply so fast, that to keep pace there must be new books on fruits every few years. Besides, the types of grapes are so diverse, and different soils, climates, and treatments produce such widely dissimilar results, that many books are required to do justice to this fruit the vineyard should be seen through many eyes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture of the Grape The general principles of grape-culture are well understood; and yet there are differences of opin ion, diflerent modes of pruning and training, which, however slight they may seem to be in themselves, become of great importance when applied to so vast an interest. It is with a desire to contribute my mite from my own experience that I have prepared this treatise. In order that the work may embrace the combined experience of practical and scientific minds, I have availed myself of such helps as were at hand, especially relying upon Prof. Harris for de scriptions of injurious insects, and upon numerous writers in our horticultural Monthlies for practical suggestions. Download or read book Bright s Single Stem Dwarf and Renewal System of Grape Culture written by William Bright and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bright's Single Stem, Dwarf and Renewal System of Grape Culture: Adapted to the Vineyard, the Grapery, and the Fruiting of Vines in Pots, on Trellises, Arbors, Etc The wide-spread interest which this little Treatise on Grape Culture has excited, throughout the United States, it will readily be supposed, is most gratifying to the author. Not only has a large edition been speedily disposed of, but the system of culture which we have advocated has been adopted by hundreds of grape-growers in all parts of the country; and the various methods of management presented, have received the unqualified sanction of the most scientific, as well as practical cultivators, in Europe and America. Another year of experience and study, has served to strengthen and confirm our confidence in the merits of the system, and suggested some improvements in the minor details of practice, which we now present to the public in the second part of this edition. Our system has been earnestly assailed by various writers, who have endeavored chiefly to show, not that the system is an imperfect or useless one, but that it is not new. We have frequently replied to these attacks, through the medium of the Horticultural journals, and we think we have proved that the system, in its general plan of culture, is new, and that it has never been practised by grape-growers, as a system, either in England or America. Grape ine. It is called the Vitis Vinifera of Europe, and some have supposed our American Vines to have had the same origin. There are some forty species, and an immense number of varieties. The practice in foreign vine yards of having different species and varieties in contiguity, would naturally cause an intermingling of numerous kinds with slight shades of difference. There is no period in the history of man, in which the Vine is not mentioned in language of grateful testimony that it is a blessing of the high est value. Its fruitfulness and its qualities, were well known in the days of Noah, and in all subse quent periods of time. Scripture in numerous instances has language peculiarly drawn from the culture of grapes and the wine - the pruning of the Vine - the treading of the grapes, which was the ancient method, and the wine press, are all incorporated with sacred writ. It is stated that a Helvetian named Helicon first made known the properties of the Vine at Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grape Culturist: A Treatise on the Cultivation of the Native Grape Every one who has read ancient history, or studied any of the numerous works on vine culture, is aware that the grape has been cultivated and esteemed as one of the choicest fruits ever since the earliest period. Vine culture has been a constant attendant upon civilization, following it from country to country, and progressing with it; yet the same species of vine that thrives so well over a great portion of the Eastern Hemisphere has, except in a few isolated locations, entirely failed in this our favored land. Although we may regret that the European grape is nu suited to our climate, yet we may congratulate ourselves that we have indigenous species from which new varieties have been produced which rival, in point of flavor at least, any of the foreign ones; and we are encouraged to hope for a native grape which shall equal the European in every good quality.
