Book Ten Years of Wall Street

Download or read book Ten Years of Wall Street written by Barnie F. Winkelman and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stock market crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression did not occur in a vacuum: their roots lie in economic events that occurred over the previous ten years. This book performs a financial autopsy on the "speculative decade" from 1919 to 1929, exploring the ruinous aftermath of World War I-in which war debts were contested and battles over reparations set the stage for a difficult international monetary situation-as well as the natural waxing and waning of economic cycles and the processes and procedures of stock exchanges that contributed to disaster. Written by a lawyer and emphasizing a legal perspective on the workings of a complex economy, this classic work of high finance offers a unique panorama on an important era of American history that is often overlooked. BARNIE F. WINKELMAN (b. 1894) also wrote Modern Chess (1931) and John D Rockefeller (1937), among other books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Then, as now, fortunes could be made and lost on Wall Street in the blink of an eye. In Ten Years in Wall Street, first published in 1870, William Worthington Fowler describes the life of the pioneers of the stock market between 1855 and 1870. As well as a personal narrative, it is a history of the economy, the stock market, and the people that were its lifeblood during these years. Detailed portraits of numerous larger than life characters emerge, including such titanic figures as Cornelius Vanderbilt and Daniel Drew. While in the military sphere battles between the Union and the Confederacy raged, the financial battles between the "bears" and the "bulls" were no less violent and unlike the Civil War, did not end in 1865. Instead of Gettysburg and Shiloh, their battlegrounds were the stocks of Erie, Rock Island, and above all, gold. These companies and commodities acquire a life of their own in Fowler's narrative. Throughout Fowler never fails to make clear the risky nature of speculation that is at once its appeal and the downfall of many Wall Street men. Fowler himself was not immune to the temptations of greed - investing more into stocks when it would have been better to leave with his profits, and unable to resist the siren call of an informer's "point". For those interested in the stock market, Ten Years in Wall Street cannot fail to entertain and inform. Many of the lessons he recounts are still applicable today: Buy only on the amplest margins. Be an occasional and not a constant operator. Cut short your losses, and let your profits run. Never sell what you have not got. Ten Years in Wall Street is an invaluable guide for any investor. William Worthington Fowler (1833-1881) was a trader on Wall Street from until 1870. After leaving his career as a speculator, he took up writing and published Woman on the American Frontier in 1877 as well as Ten Years in Wall Street. Book excerpt: A scathing dissection of the wheeling and dealing in the world's greatest financial center. Spot rates, zero coupons, blue chips, futures, options on futures, indexes, options on indexes. The vocabulary of a financial market can seem arcane, even impenetrable. Yet despite its opacity, financial news and comment is ubiquitous. Major national newspapers devote pages of newsprint to the financial sector and television news invariably features a visit to the market for the latest prices. Does this prodigious flow of information have significance for anyone except the tiny percentage of people who have significant holdings of stocks or bonds? And if it does, can non-specialists ever hope to understand what the markets are up to? To these questions Wall Street answers an emphatic yes. Its author Doug Henwood is a notorious scourge of the stock exchange in the pages of his acerbic publication Left Business Observer. The Newsletter has received wide acclamation from J.K. Galbraith, among others, and occasional less favorable comment. Norman Pearlstine, then executive editor of the Wall Street Journal, lamented, 'You are scum ... it's tragic that you exist.' With compelling clarity, Henwood dissects the world's greatest financial center, laying open the intricacies of how, and for whom, the market works. The Wall Street which emerges is not a pretty sight. Hidden from public view, the markets are poorly regulated, badly managed, chronically myopic and often corrupt. And though, as Henwood reveals, their activity contributes almost nothing to the real economy where goods are made and jobs created, they nevertheless wield enormous power. With over a trillion dollars a day crossing the wires between the world's banks, Wall Street and its sister financial centers don't just influence government, effectively they are the government.

Book Wall Street Research

Download or read book Wall Street Research written by Boris Groysberg and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall Street Research: Past, Present, and Future provides a timely account of the dramatic evolution of Wall Street research, examining its rise, fall, and reemergence. Despite regulatory, technological, and global forces that have transformed equity research in the last ten years, the industry has proven to be remarkably resilient and consistent. Boris Groysberg and Paul M. Healy get to the heart of Wall Street research—the analysts engaged in the process—and demonstrate how the analysts' roles have evolved, what drives their performance today, and how they stack up against their buy-side counterparts. The book unpacks key trends and describes how different firms have coped with shifting pressures. It concludes with an assessment of where equity research is headed in emerging markets, drawing conclusions about this often overlooked corner of Wall Street and the industry's future challenges.
