Book The Oxford Handbook of Assessment Policy and Practice in Music Education Volume 1

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Assessment Policy and Practice in Music Education Volume 1 written by Timothy S. Brophy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the music classroom, instructors who hope to receive aid are required to provide data on their classroom programs. Due to the lack of reliable, valid large-scale assessments of student achievement in music, however, music educators in schools that accept funds face a considerable challenge in finding a way to measure student learning in their classrooms. From Australia to Taiwan to the Netherlands, music teachers experience similar struggles in the quest for a definitive assessment resource that can be used by both music educators and researchers. In this two-volume Handbook, contributors from across the globe come together to provide an authority on the assessment, measurement, and evaluation of student learning in music. The Handbook's first volume emphasizes international and theoretical perspectives on music education assessment in the major world regions. This volume also looks at technical aspects of measurement in music, and outlines situations where theoretical foundations can be applied to the development of tests in music. The Handbook's second volume offers a series of practical and US-focused approaches to music education assessment. Chapters address assessment in different types of US classrooms; how to assess specific skills or requirements; and how assessment can be used in tertiary and music teacher education classrooms. Together, both volumes of The Oxford Handbook of Assessment in Music Education pave the way forward for music educators and researchers in the field.

Book A History of Education in Kentucky

Download or read book A History of Education in Kentucky written by William Ellis and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky is nationally renowned for horses, bourbon, rich natural resources, and unfortunately, hindered by a deficient educational system. Though its reputation is not always justified, in national rankings for grades K-12 and higher education, Kentucky consistently ranks among the lowest states in education funding, literacy, and student achievement. In A History of Education in Kentucky, William E. Ellis illuminates the successes and failures of public and private education in the commonwealth since its settlement. Ellis demonstrates how political leaders in the nineteenth century created a culture that devalued public education and refused to adequately fund it. He also analyzes efforts by teachers and policy makers to enact vital reforms and establish adequate, equal education, and discusses ongoing battles related to religious instruction, integration, and the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA). A History of Education in Kentucky is the only up-to-date, single-volume history of education in the commonwealth. Offering more than mere policy analysis, this comprehensive work tells the story of passionate students, teachers, and leaders who have worked for progress from the 1770s to the present day. Despite the prevailing pessimism about education in Kentucky, Ellis acknowledges signs of a vibrant educational atmosphere in the state. By advocating a better understanding of the past, Ellis looks to the future and challenges Kentuckians to avoid historic failures and build on their successes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 10 Strategies for Reentering the Workforce: Career Advice for Anyone Who Needs a Good (or Better) Job Now is an easy-to-read guide for anyone who needs to reenter the workforce because of economic necessity, a plant closing, corporate downsizing, divorce, injury, or other life-changing circumstance—including the simple desire for a new challenge. Expert career counselor Mary E. Ghilani identifies each type of career changer and discusses the unique challenges each group faces, the options available to them, and strategies for finding a new job or successfully returning to school to upgrade skills. The book also offers numerous ways to overcome obstacles and defeat the common yes, buts that prevent people from achieving a satisfactory work life. This book will directly help unemployed and mid-career workers who need to find a better job quickly to keep their heads above water. But it will also be of great service to those who can take some time to completely reassess where they are and where they are going. In her practice as director of a career center, Ghilani often hears common laments like, I wish I had a job that... or I always wanted to be a... These statements are usually followed up with, But now it's too late, or, I don't have the skills, or, It will take too long or cost too much. Her response: Do work that you enjoy for the remaining working years of your life, even if it means going back to school or starting at the bottom of the ladder. That, she explains, is a much better alternative to toiling unhappily while awaiting retirement. Besides great advice, the book also contains hands-on tools for figuring out what constitutes a great job, sample resumes and cover letters, and a list of Web sites catering to those eager to reenter the workforce or find a better job.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is little question that the descendants of the new European immigrant groups from Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe have done very well in the United States, reaching levels of achievement far above blacks. Yet the new Europeans began to migrate to the United States in 1880, a time when blacks were no longer slaves. Why have the new immigrants fared better than the blacks? This volume focuses on the historical origins of the current differences between the groups. Professor Lieberson scoured early U. S. censuses and used a variety of offbeat information sources to develop data that would throw light on this question, as well as provide new information on occupations at the turn of the century, finding remarkable parallels between the black position in the urban South and the urban North. He examines and compares progress in education and in politics between the new Europeans and the blacks. What were the effects of segregation? Why did labor unions discriminate more severely against blacks than against the new immigrant groups? This book will generate a fresh interpretation of the origins of black-new European differences, one which explains why other nonwhite groups, such as the Chinese and Japanese, have done relatively well.
