Book excerpt: You have probably seen Rex Ellis on TV. He is constantly turning up on the box with his team of camels and his adventurous urban guests hanging on for dear life somewhere in the sandy wastes of the Red Heart, maybe near Birdsville. Or traversing Lake Eyre full of water and pelicans in his beloved tinny. Rex lives a nomadic, desert life out there that you and I can only dream about. For a desert wanderer he is pretty talkative and has a mad sense of humour, but when he does do his block with a recalcitrant safari guest or a stubborn camel, he gets volcanic. Ellis has the knack of extracting the ridiculous or the absurd essence wherever he travels. He is an observer of the human condition, and focuses by inclination on the farcical. Perhaps his lifetime of observing outback wildlife gives him an excellent basis for a comparative study of crazy human behaviour. He has always taken paying guests on his outback adventures, and his colourful and varied descriptions of their shenanigans will bring great satisfaction to the superior armchair adventurer. And of course every evening there is the campfire. Ellis sees the campfire as the quintessence of the freedom of the outback, the relaxation after a hard day’s yakka, the yarn spinning, the chai-yacking and the camaraderie that develops so easily while you all stare at the mysterious, inspiring flames rather than at a mind-deadening TV set. This is the very essence of outback travelling, and Ellis’s highly emotional introduction leaves no doubt about the way he feels about these magic evenings. So, folks, it’s still not too late! If you can’t get out there straightaway, then read the book. Ten Thousand Campfires leaves no doubt that there is still plenty of the real, old-fashioned Australia in the Red Heart and it is pretty easy to distinguish it from what the author refers to as the ‘sanitized’ metropolitan Australia.

His country burning with war, his family shattered, a young man strikes off on his own and builds a legend with his fists, a pistol, knife, and long gun. This collection includes the classic westerns Trail of the Mountain Man and Return of the Mountain Man, long unavailable and here together for the first time in one action-packed volume ... Where There’s Gold, There’s Blood, Bullets, and Smoke When the Missouri farm boy named Jensen came west, he started fighting, surviving, and learning every brutal step of the way. He learned from a mountain man named Preacher. He learned from Indians. And from outlaws. And he learned that nothing burns the souls of men faster than the lure of glimmering gold. From one ramshackle frontier mountain town to another, Smoke sees gold strikes—and gold fever—drawing crooks and cold-blooded killers from across the nation. Faced with an explosion of horrifying violence—along with some demons from his past—Smoke has no choice but to lay down the law. Once he does, it doesn’t matter how many men and guns the outlaws bring. Because if Smoke Jensen has learned anything, it’s this: in a vast, savage land, you don’t back down, don’t give up, and don’t stop shooting until the last bad man goes to his Maker.

With new goddesses forcing blessings on him in exchange for offerings, and another familiar in the form of a peckish pixie dragon, Mukohda steadily amasses wealth and power. Finally, the cowardly hero (with a little “help” from his friends) has reached the city of Dolan, where he will challenge the city’s dungeon, whether he wants to or not! But the challenges start before he sets foot inside the dungeon, such as getting accosted by a disappointment of a guildmaster, extorted for booze by some rather intense male gods, and splurging on an actual kitchen stove. For Mukohda, diligent preparation for dungeon diving begins with preparing enough meals to satisfy his voracious companions. Thus armed to battle his familiar’s hunger, Mukohda’s party sets its sights on glorious battle in the dungeon. With ridiculous skills and overpowered magic beasts on his side, does the dungeon even stand a chance......?!

Book Gettysburg

  • ISBN : 142990464X
  • Pages : 530 pages

Download or read book Gettysburg written by Newt Gingrich and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An action-packed and painstakingly researched masterwork by Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen, Gettysburg stands as the first book in a series to tell the story of how history could have unfolded, how a victory for Lee would have changed the destiny of the nation forever. This is a novel of true heroism and glory in America's most trying hour. The Civil War is the American Iliad. Lincoln, Stonewall Jackson, Grant, and Lee still stand as heroic ideals, as stirring to our national memory as were the legendary Achilles and Hector to the world of the ancient Greeks. Within the story of our Iliad one battle stands forth above all others: Gettysburg. Millions visit Gettysburg each year to walk the fields and hills where Joshua Chamberlain made his legendary stand and Pickett went down to a defeat which doomed a nation, but in defeat forever became a symbol of the heroic Lost Cause. As the years passed, and the scars healed, the debate, rather than drifting away has intensified. It is the battle which has become the great "what if," of American history and the center of a dreamscape where Confederate banners finally do crown the heights above the town. The year is 1863, and General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia are poised to attack the North and claim the victory that would end the brutal conflict. But Lee's Gettysburg campaign ended in failure, ultimately deciding the outcome of the war. Launching his men into a vast sweeping operation, of which the town of Gettysburg is but one small part of the plan, General Lee, acting as he did at Chancellorsville, Second Manassas, and Antietam, displays the audacity of old. He knows he has but one more good chance to gain ultimate victory, for after two years of war the relentless power of an industrialized north is wearing the South down. Lee's lieutenants and the men in the ranks, imbued with this renewed spirit of the offensive embark on the Gettysburg Campaign that many dream "should have been." The soldiers in the line, Yank and Reb, knew as well that this would be the great challenge, the decisive moment that would decided whether a nation would die, or be created, and both sides were ready, willing to lay down their lives for their Cause.

Book Muhammad

  • Author : Richard A. Gabriel
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press

Download or read book Muhammad written by Richard A. Gabriel and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That Muhammad succeeded as a prophet is undeniable; a prominent military historian now suggests that he might not have done so had he not also been a great soldier. Best known as the founder of a major religion, Muhammad was also Islam’s first great general. While there have been numerous accounts of Muhammad the Prophet, this is the first military biography of the man. In Muhammad: Islam’s First Great General, Richard A. Gabriel shows us a warrior never before seen in antiquity—a leader of an all-new religious movement who in a single decade fought eight major battles, led eighteen raids, and planned thirty-eight other military operations. Gabriel’s study portrays Muhammad as a revolutionary who introduced military innovations that transformed armies and warfare throughout the Arab world. Gabriel analyzes the environment in which Muhammad lived and the religion he inspired as they relate to his military achievements. Gabriel explains how Muhammad changed the social composition of Arab armies by replacing traditional ways of fighting with a new command structure. Muhammad’s transformation of Arab warfare enabled his successors to establish the core of the Islamic empire—an accomplishment that, Gabriel argues, would have been militarily impossible without Muhammad’s innovations. Richard A. Gabriel challenges existing scholarship on Muhammad’s place in history and offers a viewpoint not previously attempted.
