Download or read book Albion s Seed written by David Hackett Fischer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-03-14 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.

Download or read book The Making of a Hotwife written by Lissy Bergman and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Megan and Chris in their exploration of hotwifing. Volume 1:I know I should've been more careful. I should've seen where things were heading. But would I've done anything differently though? I don't know. Maybe one or two things, maybe everything, maybe nothing. If I'd been able to foresee the state my life was in now, would it have even begun? This tale is primarily cautionary. Lust and Desire corrupt. Remember that, and if you ever get the chance...well, make your own choice...Volume 2:"What's a hot wife?" I asked. I didn't know it at the time but that question was to change everything. He told me that a "hot wife" was a married woman whose husband encouraged her to enjoy the carnal pleasures of other guys. The idea shocked me, "Why would a man want his wife to sleep with another man?"In Volume 2, my education and transformation into a "hot wife" continues when I meet a "bull" and a "cuckold", and I begin to discover that slut is an anagram of lust...Volume 3:My surrender to pleasure and lust had left me in a new place. I was pleased that I had such a supportive, encouraging, and loving husband and it was very arousing to let go of my old religious prohibitions and taboos and develop into a primal, sexual woman. I was also beginning to understand more about my own arousal. I was feeling more sexual sensations and feelings, and this opened me up more to my new reality, "cocks give me intense, erotic feelings," I admitted aloud.I was also beginning to feel more, and to open up. I now understood that I'd needed to feel sexy before I'd been able to even consider having sex with another man. Then, I'd needed to meet a guy who I wanted to sleep with. Pierre had awakened that desire in me that my husband hadn't been able to.Volume 4:"I'm glad we are having this conversation, there're some things I've been meaning to discuss with you too. Firstly, I want you know that I'm never going to be your sissy little cuckold. I don't get off on feeling humiliated and having a sexually dominant wife," He paused, then added "What arouses me is having a sexy and uninhibited wife, and the prestige that comes with it. Got it?" There was a new strength in his voice and I liked it. "I sucked Eugene's cock today. Did I tell you? "What? When did this happen?" I didn't reply, instead I walked over and gave him the note that Eugene had left for me, then walked back into the kitchen and poured us a glass of wine each.
Download or read book Cajun Waltz written by Robert H. Patton and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lyrics of a Cajun waltz may be dark as midnight with heartache and trouble, but still the music swings. The same goes for what happens after a shifty musician and a lonely shopgirl let destiny sweep them into an ill-suited marriage in swampy southwest Louisiana on the eve of the Depression. Love doesn’t much figure between Richie Bainard and Esther Block. They build a business together while dreaming opposite dreams of fulfillment. But like a gumbo simmering with peppers and spice, desires finally come to a boil. Three generations of the volatile clan grapple with the region’s economic struggles and racial tensions. The Bainard children, twins Bonnie and R.J. and their half-brother, Seth, pursue separate cravings for money, sex, and religion. The chase in each case runs off the rails thanks to an ex-marine with a soft heart and a brutish devotion, a dazzling young stepmother of mixed race and mixed motives, and a high school tart who proves tougher and truer than all of them. Ultimately it takes the mass devastation of Hurricane Audrey in 1957 to cleanse the reckless passions. The aftermath is painful but pure, like an old blues song that puts tears in your eyes while you dance.

Book excerpt: Though with only two dozen manga translations, 80 essays, 55 reviews, one exhibition pamphlet, and zero solo-authored books under his belt, Ryan Holmberg PhD is widely regarded as the biggest fish in the puddle-sized sea of alternative manga in the Anglosphere. Fresh off a major professional setback and a steamy summer of near-murderous romance, in the fall of 2017 Dr. Holmberg departed for a two-year stint as a Visiting Professor at the prestigious University of Tokyo, where he would commence to document his research finds, translation troubles, and escapades with aging manga artists in a series of detailed Instagram posts @mangaberg. Since returning to the United States in the fall of 2019, Dr. Holmberg has continued to undermine his academic career as a so-called comics scholar by investing way more than time and sharing way more about his personal life than he should on this Instagram account.Collecting 300 pages worth of Instagram posts of cutting-edge research, rarely-seen manga images, and behind-the-scenes looks at the nitty-gritty of manga research and translation - as well as a NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED manifesto of Dr. Mangaberg's thoughts and theoretical musings about comics translation - THE TRANSLATOR WITHOUT TALENT is a tell-all slog through two-plus years of activity of your favorite nose-in-the-mud manga scholar. Hopping across the work of some of the best and weirdest alt-manga and gekiga artists in the world, this genre-defying volume is perfect for anyone who is obsessed with obscure, amazing, and all-too-frequently retrograde manga, but does not have the patience to scroll through an Instagram account for free. Comics studies has never seen anything like THE TRANSLATOR WITHOUT TALENT . . . and it may never again. Published by the comics and manga fanzine BUBBLES in its first foray away from the xerox machine.
Download or read book Fifth Business written by Robertson Davies and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in Robertson Davies's acclaimed The Deptford Trilogy, with a new foreword by Kelly Link Ramsay is a man twice born, a man who has returned from the hell of the battle-grave at Passchendaele in World War I decorated with the Victoria Cross and destined to be caught in a no man's land where memory, history, and myth collide. As Ramsay tells his story, it begins to seem that from boyhood, he has exerted a perhaps mystical, perhaps pernicious, influence on those around him. His apparently innocent involvement in such innocuous events as the throwing of a snowball or the teaching of card tricks to a small boy in the end prove neither innocent nor innocuous. Fifth Business stands alone as a remarkable story told by a rational man who discovers that the marvelous is only another aspect of the real. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

And we recognize how right she is today. Yet the voters who boosted Trump all the way to the White House have been a permanent part of our American fabric, argues Isenberg. The wretched and landless poor have existed from the time of the earliest British colonial settlement to today's hillbillies. They were alternately known as “waste people,” “offals,” “rubbish,” “lazy lubbers,” and “crackers.” By the 1850s, the downtrodden included so-called “clay eaters” and “sandhillers,” known for prematurely aged children distinguished by their yellowish skin, ragged clothing, and listless minds. Surveying political rhetoric and policy, popular literature and scientific theories over four hundred years, Isenberg upends assumptions about America’s supposedly class-free society––where liberty and hard work were meant to ensure real social mobility. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early nineteenth century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics–-a widely popular movement embraced by Theodore Roosevelt that targeted poor whites for sterilization. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ’s Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty. Marginalized as a class, white trash have always been at or near the center of major political debates over the character of the American identity. We acknowledge racial injustice as an ugly stain on our nation’s history. With Isenberg’s landmark book, we will have to face the truth about the enduring, malevolent nature of class as well.

Download or read book Tricksters and Estates written by J. Douglas Canfield and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the Renaissance was the Golden Age of English comedy, the Restoration was the Silver. These comedies are full of tricksters attempting to gain estates, the emblem and the reality of power in late feudal England. The tricksters appear in a number of guises, such as heroines landing their men, younger brothers seeking estates, or Cavaliers threatened with dispossession. The hybrid nature of these plays has long posed problems for critics, and few studies have attempted to deal with their diversity in a comprehensive way. Now one of the leading scholars of Restoration drama offers a cultural history of the period's comedy that puts the plays in perspective and reveals the ideological function they performed in England during the latter half of the seventeenth century. To explain this function, J. Douglas Canfield groups the plays into three categories: social comedy, which underwrites Stuart ideology; subversive comedy, which undercuts it; and comical satire, which challenges it as fundamentally immoral or amoral. Through play-by-play analysis, he demonstrates how most of the comedies support the ideology of the Stuart monarchs and the aristocracy, upholding what they regarded as their natural right to rule because of an innate superiority over all other classes. A significant minority of comedies, however, reveal cracks in class solidarity, portray witty heroines who inhabit the margins of society, or give voice to folk tricksters who embody a democratic force nearly capable of overwhelming class hierarchy. A smaller yet but still significant minority end in no resolution, no restoration, but, at their most radical, playfully portray Stuart ideology as empty rhetoric. Tricksters and Estates is a truly comprehensive work, offering serious critical readings of many plays that have never before received close attention and fresh insights into more familiar works. By juxtaposing the comedies of such lesser-known playwrights as Orrery, Lacy, and Rawlins with those of more familiar figures like Behn, Wycherley, and Dryden, the author invites a greater appreciation than has previously been possible of the meaning and function of Restoration comedy. This intelligent and wide-ranging study promises is a standard work in its field.

Download or read book Essays on Paula Rego written by Maria Manuel Lisboa and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these powerful and stylishly written essays, Maria Manuel Lisboa dissects the work of Paula Rego, the Portuguese-born artist considered one of the greatest artists of modern times. Focusing primarily on Rego's work since the 1980s, Lisboa explores the complex relationships between violence and nurturing, power and impotence, politics and the family that run through Rego's art. Taking a historicist approach to the evolution of the artist's work, Lisboa embeds the works within Rego's personal history as well as Portugal's (and indeed other nations') stories, and reveals the interrelationship between political significance and the raw emotion that lies at the heart of Rego's uncompromising iconographic style. Fundamental to Lisboa's analysis is an understanding that apparent opposites - male and female, sacred and profane, aggression and submissiveness - often co-exist in Rego's work in a way that is both disturbing and destabilising. This collection of essays brings together both unpublished and previously published work to make a significant contribution to scholarship about Paula Rego. It will also be of interest to scholars and students of contemporary painting, Portuguese and British feminist art, and the political and ideological aspects of the visual arts.
