Book Tombstone Inscriptions Orange and Alamance Counties N C

Download or read book Tombstone Inscriptions Orange and Alamance Counties N C written by Stewart Dunaway and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-09-22 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durward T. Stokes of Alamance Co. surveyed a number of abandoned or lost cemeteries - primarily in Alamance County, but moved around crossing into Orange, Chatham, and Randolph Counties. His manuscript was typed in 1979, but never published. His actual surveys occurred in 1958-9. This was fortunate, since a number of these locations are gone - and the old tombstones are not getting better (visually) with age. Therefore, I as editor, retyped his manuscript - and added historical remarks (where helpful), pictures I took in modern times, and a detailed index. Durward had some B&W pictures - which are included in this book as well.Lastly, there are two graveyards that I found, that Durward was not aware of - included with pictures and maps in an Appendix.

Book That s What They Are in For

Download or read book That s What They Are in For written by Robert E. Leverenz and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literary effort is one man's testimony about the extraordinary privilege it is to be a clergyperson or priest in a local parish. The vocation of parish pastor has been for Robert Leverenz a most exciting, humbling, fulfilling life. The story following is uniquely his own and he does not write this to bring to bear the destructive dynamic of competition with others. This book is for anyone who is impressed by the ministries of the church or has had disconcerting moments with pastor and parish; it helps one understand the humanity and the divinity embodied in a community of Jesus followers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon war diaries, court martial papers and interviews with veterans and family members, award-winning BBC journalist Stephen Walker explains how, often exhausted by battle, or suffering shell-shock, men who refused to fight were branded as cowards, and shot at dawn by a firing squad. From the cities and townlands of Ireland to the killing fields of the Western Front and Gallipoli, Forgotten Soldiers traces the lives of men who enlisted to fight an enemy but ended up being killed by their own side. For decades the full story of how the Irishmen died has largely remained a secret, but now one of the most controversial chapters in British military history can at last be told. In 2006 the British government finally pardoned those soldiers who were shot at dawn. Forgotten Soldiers is the first book to chronicle how relatives and campaigners fought to clear the men's names.

Book My First 80 Years

Download or read book My First 80 Years written by George Brown and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Brown wanted to write about his interesting life for his family and friends. He loved writing and kept diaries of some of his adventures during his later life. In 1970 he helped his wife, Nan Brown, to write a book about their adventure living in South Georgia in the Antarctic for two and a half years in the mid-1950s. The book is entitled Antarctic Housewife. George lived in some very diverse placesGlasgow, Edinburgh, was at sea in the British Merchant Navy sailing to Asia, Africa, and India during the war at thirteen years of age, Grytviken, South Georgia, Alice Springs in Central Australia, Queensland Sunshine Coast, and Adelaide. During his time spent in Alice Springs, he worked as the Director for the Royal Flying Doctor service for thirteen years from 1957 when Alice Springs was a very small town and the only communication for people in the outback was a two-way radio. He and his wife then started the first travel agency in Alice Springs and were able to travel to new destinations together for their business. George then began a two-way communication business in Alice Springs, selling radios, phones and equipment for communication in the outback of Australia. This was called XLCom. He operated this for several years before retiring when he and Nan moved to the Sunshine Coast and lived between Alice Springs and Mooloolaba. His daughter Catriona ran the business for them. George was involved in the community in Alice Springs for years; he started the Alice Springs Pipe Band with friend Ron Ross. He also was a lifetime member and past president of Mbantua Rotary Club and was heavily involved in rotary community fund-raising events like the Henley on Todd for numerous years. George was a member of the Show Society and organized the annual Alice Springs show, which was the highlight for families in Central Australia. He became involved as a volunteer in the Alice Springs Pony Club when his daughters started riding at a young age. George was president of the show Jumping Club and became a show jump course builder. They traveled to Edinburgh where he owned a flat to tour around Scotland, but sadly, his wife died in 1995 due to suicide. George was totally devastated that the love of his life could end her life so tragically. George then returned to Australia to build a large place in Alice Springs and live with his two daughters, Fiona and Catriona, and their families in a large shared house on a block out of town on the Todd River. He kept himself busy by gardening, building a cottage, traveling to places like Europe and South Georgia to learn more about places he had visited in his earlier life. He had developed a real interest in World War II and the British Merchant Navy. He caught up with friends from the various stages in his life and reacquainted himself with his family living in Australia and England. He was invited to South Georgia to help restore the church and the community of Grytviken for tourits to visit as South Georgia and the Antarctic were opening up for tourism. He spent several months back in the place he loved the most.

Book The High Peak Dambuster

Download or read book The High Peak Dambuster written by Frank Pleszak and published by Air World. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation Chastise, the audacious attack on the dams in the Ruhr valley, is arguably one of the most famous airborne attacks in history. During the night of 16/17 May 1943, 133 men in nineteen specially-adapted Lancasters – the famous Dambusters – set off to attack six dams deep in the heart of Germany. Eight of the bombers, and 56 of the aircrew, did not come home. Three of the aircrew who took part were from the High Peak region of Derbyshire. Flight Lieutenant Bill Astell, the pilot of ED864 who hailed from Coombs near Chapel-en-le-Frith, was killed after flying into electricity pylons on the way to the dams. The navigator in ED924, Sergeant John Nugent, from Stoney Middleton, survived the Dambusters Raid but was killed later in the war. The third High Peak Dambuster, on whom this biography concentrates, is the little-known Sergeant Jack Marriott from Chinley, the flight engineer on Lancaster ED937 during the attack. Marriott’s Lancaster, Z-Zebra, reached the Möhne Dam, only to discover that it had been breached, some five bouncing bombs already having been released at it. The crew, led by Squadron Leader Henry Maudslay DFC, then flew on to the Eder Dam where their ‘bouncing bomb’ exploded beneath the Lancaster after hitting the parapet of the structure. The damaged Lancaster struggled homeward, but was shot down on the Dutch border; Jack, together with his crew, was killed in the crash. In this autobiography, Frank Pleszak explores Jack’s life, his RAF service prior to joining 617 Squadron, and then the events leading up to and during Operation Chastise itself. But for Jack, one the immortal Dambusters, his story continued on after that historic night – particularly during the filming of the 1955 epic Dam Busters in which his aircraft features.
