Book Ten Poems to Open Your Heart

Download or read book Ten Poems to Open Your Heart written by Roger Housden and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten Poems to Open Your Heart is a book devoted to love: to the intimacy of personal love and lovemaking, to a loving compassion for others, and to the love that embraces both this world and the next. This new volume from Roger Housden features a few of the same poets as his extraordinarily moving Ten Poems to Change Your Life, such as Mary Oliver and Pablo Neruda, along with contributions from Sharon Olds, Wislawa Szymborska, Czeslaw Milosz, Denise Levertov, and others. Any one of the ten poems and, indeed, any one of Housden’s reflections on them, can open, gladden, or pierce your heart. Through the voices of these ten inspiring poets, and through illustrations from his own life, Housden expresses the tenderness, beauty, joys, and sorrows of love, the presence of which, more than anything else, gives human existence its meaning. As Housden says in his eloquent introduction, “Great poetry happens when the mind is looking the other way and words fall from the sky to shape a moment that would normally be untranslatable. . . . When the heart opens, we forget ourselves and the world pours in: this world, and also the invisible world of meaning that sustains everything that was and ever shall be.” From the Hardcover edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great poetry calls into question everything. It dares us to break free from the safe strategies of the cautious mind. It opens us to pain and joy and delight. It amazes, startles, pierces, and transforms us. It can lead to communion and grace. Through the voices of ten inspiring poets and his own reflections, the author of Sacred America shows how poetry illuminates the eternal feelings and desires that stir the human heart and soul. These poems explore such universal themes as the awakening of wonder, the longing for love, the wisdom of dreams, and the courage required to live an authentic life. In thoughtful commentary on each work, Housden offers glimpses into his personal spiritual journey and invites readers to contemplate the significance of the poet's message in their own lives. In Ten Poems to Change Your Life, Roger Housden shows how these astonishing poems can inspire you to live what you always knew in your bones but never had the words for. Book Man y sh Book 15

Download or read book Man y sh Book 15 written by and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new translation, the lifework of the author, is fully academically oriented. Given that it is the largest Japanese poetic anthology and thus the most important compendium of Japanese culture of the Asuka period (AD 592–710) and most of the Nara period (AD 710–784), it is very much more than a work of literature, which has been the single focus of previous translations by Pierson and Suga. Thus, in this translation the author has sought to present the Man’yōshῡ to the reader preserving as far as possible the flavour, sounds and semantics of the original poems. The result is a more literate but true translation. In addition, because the realia of the Man’yōshῡ are mostly alien to both Westerners and modern Japanese, the text contains appropriate commentaries that illuminate the context. Also unique to this new version is the appearance of the original text, kana transliterations, romanization and glossing with morphemic analysis for the benefit of specialists and students of Old Japanese. The entire translation will consist of 20 volumes, paralleling the original twenty books. The first to be published is volume 15 (announced here) one of six books written mostly in phonographic script. The author argues that the importance of book 15 lies in the fact that it contains a large number of Western Old Japanese grammatical forms and constructions that are not attested in any other Western Old Japanese text, but are extremely important in understanding this language, thereby providing a valuable foundation for all the other Man’yōshῡ texts, including those written in semantographic text. The publication sequence and anticipated dates of the remaining volumes will be announced at a future date.

Book excerpt: 'Kokin Wakashū' (Collection of Early and Modern Japanese Poetry) is one of the world's earliest and most important poetic anthologies. It consists of over 1,000 poems, almost all of which were probably written between the last half of the eighth century and 905, the approximate date of the work's compilation. This is the first full-scale study in English of Kokinshū (as it is usually called), the anthology that fixed the basic style of Japanese poetry, and in so doing defined the aesthetics of an entire literary tradition. Kokinshū cannot be appreciated without some knowledge of Chinese poetry and its influence on Japanese writers, Heian aesthetics ideals, the aims of the anthology's poets and compilers, the expectations of the intended audience, and the nature of Heian society. Brocade by Night attempts to provide the necessary perspective by discussing the Chinese poetry known to the Japanese, the characteristics of early Japanese composition in both Chinese and Japanese, and the social and literary atmosphere out of which Kokinshū arose. The author also discusses the content and form of typical Kokinshū poems, the structure of the anthology, and the question of individuality in a genre of convention. The role of Kokinshū principal compiler, Ki no Tsurayuki, is described, and the author examines two of Tsurayuki's other works, Tosa nikki and Shinsen waka. A companion volume, 'Kokin Wakashū', The First Imperial Anthology of Japanese Poetry, consists of new translations of Kokinshū and Tosa nikki and the first translation in any language of Shinsen waka

Book Representations of the Divine in Arabic Poetry

Download or read book Representations of the Divine in Arabic Poetry written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Islam the fascination for “the word” is as vigorous as in Judaism and in Christianity, but an extra dimension is, that the revealed text, the Koran, is considered to be verbatim the word of the Almighty Himself, thereby providing the Arabic language with just an extra quality. No wonder that throughout Islamic history the study of the word, the Koran, the prophet’s utterances and the interpretation of both, has become the main axis of knowledge and education. As a consequence the intellectuals – and also the poets in Islamic culture - were thoroughly familiar with religious terms and the phraseology of a language which was highly estimated because of the divine origin with which it was associated. No wonder therefore, that allusions to religious texts can be found throughout Arabic literature, both classical and modern. The subject of this volume is the representation of the divine in Arabic poetry, be it the experience of the divine as expressed by poets or the use of imagery coined by religion.

Book Choosing Tough Words

Download or read book Choosing Tough Words written by Angelica Michelis and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the post of Poet Laureate was allocated on the basis of popularity, Carol Ann Duffy would have been the first woman to hold this prestigious post. Like Philip Larkin in his day, Duffy is both a poet respected by many academics and teachers, and widely read and enjoyed by children and adult readers of poetry. This is the first full-length collection of essays on the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy, approaching and exploring her work from a variety of literary theoretical perspectives, including feminism, masculinity, national identity, and post-structuralism. This lively anthology situates Duffy's poems in relation to current debates about the state, value and social relevance of contemporary British poetry.

Book Tamil Heroic Poetry

Download or read book Tamil Heroic Poetry written by K. Kailasapathy and published by Hachette India. This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elegant and thorough examination of the riches of Sangam poetry In this acclaimed comparative study, K. Kailasapathy, the celebrated Sri Lankan academic and critic, introduces and interprets ancient Tamil poems and examines the stylistic heritage, themes and motifs pervading Sangam poetry while building the literary corpus's bridge to heroic poetry in other languages - most notably Greek. He identifies the formulaic expression, stock phrases and overarching sensibilities pervasive in the poems and, going much against the popular grain, expands on the notion that oral verse-making is central to Sangam poetry. A nod to Milman Parry, this deeply necessary exploration of our neglected past is an engaging and accessible discourse on one of our most fertile literary ages and, with much agility, connects the dots in studying early Tamil poetry for a modern reader.
