Book excerpt: Comedy from Dave Vitty - Chris Moyles' hilarious sidekick on Radio 1. Dave Vitty, aka Radio 1's Comedy Dave, has worked his way from the backrooms of BBC radio to the biggest breakfast show on the airwaves and has a story to tell. He's played Glastonbury - twice - he's had his ear licked by Dave Grohl and he's written more 'Car Park Catchphrases' than you can shake a stick at. Dave's first attempt at being a proper writer is a collection of his stories, misadventures, songs, anecdotes and pictures from his phone all linked together in a far from tedious way. Less Lord of the Rings and more 'Lord of the Things', there's a lot of comedy value in Dave's excellent book.

Book The Big Screen Comedies of Mel Brooks

Download or read book The Big Screen Comedies of Mel Brooks written by Robert Alan Crick and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mel Brooks is often regarded as one of Hollywood's funniest men, thanks to such highly successful films as The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. His films do have a tendency to turn out much like the jokes that comprise them--hit-or-miss, one minute shoot-the-moon brilliant and the next minute well short of laughs. This work provides a thorough synopsis and thematic analysis for each of his twelve films along with complete cast and production credits: The Producers (1968), The Twelve Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), High Anxiety (1977), History of the World--Part 1 (1981), To Be or Not to Be (1983), Spaceballs (1987), Life Stinks (1991), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995).

Book Alternative Comedy

Download or read book Alternative Comedy written by Oliver Double and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, the alternative comedy scene exploded into life in Britain and completely changed the style, subject matter and politics of British stand-up. Contemporary critics talked about it as 'anti-matter comedy' that 'makes you laugh while actually rearranging large chunks of your brain'. This book draws on a wealth of archive material – including unpublished recordings of early performances – and new interviews with key figures such as Alexei Sayle, Andy de la Tour and Jim Barclay, to provide a detailed history of the early scene and an examination of the distinctive modes of performance style which developed. Beginning with its origins, the volume traces the influence of American stand-up, and in particular the significance of Mort Sahl and Lenny Bruce as the originators of a style of stand-up that influenced the British pioneers of alternative comedy. It shows how the opening of the Comedy Store in 1979 provided a catalyst for a new movement, which grew outward from there with the foundation of the group Alternative Cabaret and the opening of the Comic Strip. But it also looks at smaller venues and less celebrated acts that have not been as well remembered, including ranting poets and street performers. Finally, it looks at alternative comedy's legacy, showing how it was the starting point for the UK's thriving and varied live scene, which encompasses anything from small pub gigs to huge arena tours.

Book American Theatre A Chronicle of Comedy and Drama 1914 1930

Download or read book American Theatre A Chronicle of Comedy and Drama 1914 1930 written by Gerald Bordman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Theatre series discusses every Broadway production chronologically--show by show and season by season. It offers plot summaries, production details, names of leading actors and actresses--the roles they played, as well as any special or unusual aspects of individual shows. This second volume in the series, covers what is probably the richest period in American theater, the years 1914 through 1930. Bordman includes most of Eugene O'Neill's work, along with playwrights as diverse as Elmer Rice and George Kaufman. Among the era's stars one finds John and Ethel Barrymore, Helen Hayes, Katherine Cornell, and Lynn Fontaine and Alfred Lunt. Considering the sheer number of productions, American theater climbed to its all-time high in the 1920s; by mid-decade, nearly 300 new plays appeared on Broadway each year. America saw more theatrical activity--in every sense of the word-- than any time before or since.
