Book Ten Generations

Download or read book Ten Generations written by David More and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TEN GENERATIONS is a family saga that follows the Watt family, generation by generation, from Edinburgh in the late 1500s to colonial New York, through the American Revolution, back to the Channel Islands, and then to Canada, where the family settles in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The family rises to prominence in Edinburgh, then emigrates to colonial New York in the early 1700s. There, they are at the pinnacle of society, but are torn apart by Revolution and war. Forced into exile in Britain, the descendants of one branch return to the continent and settle near Montreal, where they once again become important in the cultural and political life of Quebec and Canada in the 1800s and 1900s. The author uses primary source materials such as personal letters, anecdotes, and illustrations from family collections and fits these expertly into the historical context of the times to provide a dramatic, readable and entertaining account of the family's history -- of fortunes made and lost, of war and revolution, of personal tragedy and triumph. Ten Generations provides an intriguing personal window into the real history of the times and into the lives of this interesting family.

Book Ten Generations of Bondage

Download or read book Ten Generations of Bondage written by Johari Ade and published by . This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated 2nd edition of Ten Generations of Bondage is the true story about an African American family from enslavement to the 21st century. The Lewis-Green historical account begins in 1740 when a freeborn Violet sues her employer for unjustly keeping her in bondage. It continues to the year 2012 in the midst of the re-election campaign of Barack Obama, the first African American President. Although the family somehow manages to keep the faith over the years, this book takes the reader through unimaginable atrocities that the family must face over the next generations as they journey to the new millennium. The author proves that fact is stranger than fiction as the reader learns the story of Syntha, who was sold at least six times, Kitty, a proud African kidnapped from her homeland and arriving in America in chains and Tom, a Native American who was enslaved while attempting to rescue his wife from it. Even after "freedom" the family must face lynching, murder and many other challenges as they desperately attempt to reconnect their fragmented families. Ten Generations of Bondage keeps the reader engaged as the family navigates through the horrors of slavery, the challenges of emancipation, the degradation of Jim Crow, achievements of the civil rights movements, and the demoralization of modern day racism. Despite the degree or the type of bondage, the Lewis-Green family always manages to keep the faith. This is a must-read for genealogists, family historians, and anyone wishing to explore the richness of the African American Family.

Book The Twelve Generations of the Creation

Download or read book The Twelve Generations of the Creation written by Larry Edwards and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-05 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genesis is divided into twelve different generations, twelve epochs of variable lengths. Each epoch is full of abundant spiritual lessons. God reveals His character through His names. Therefore, fourteen different names of God in Genesis are translated from Hebrew into English. This commentary is written from the perspective of a medical doctor. There are many medical insights to be gained from Genesis on human sexuality, the menses, aging and its physical and psychological processes, the dying process, and the care of the dying patient and his/her family. The account of the creation in Genesis, and from other parts of the Bible, is compared to current scientific theories. Difficult texts from Genesis are elucidated by a review of the original text in Hebrew and in Greek for selected New Testament passages. The Biblical Timelines are traced from the time of Adam until the birth of the Christ. During his medical career, the author has studied internal medicine, geriatrics, and infectious diseases and been credentialed in these fields. He has published in scientific journals in the discipline of infectious diseases. His medical fellowships include the American College of Physicians, the American College of Physician Executives, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has held several administrative positions at an executive level. He has published in Christian periodicals on the subject of Medicine and the Scriptures and authored a prior book, "Family Reunion with Old Testament Patriarchs." He is a former Dean of the ORU School of Medicine, a Christian medical school. He has served on several boards of churches and Christian organizations. He has taught group Bible studies for over four decades. In order to better understand the Bible, he has studied Hebrew and Greek.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

Download or read book Generations written by Neil Howe and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1992-09-30 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed by national leaders as politically diverse as former Vice President Al Gore and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Generations has been heralded by reviewers as a brilliant, if somewhat unsettling, reassessment of where America is heading. William Strauss and Neil Howe posit the history of America as a succession of generational biographies, beginning in 1584 and encompassing every-one through the children of today. Their bold theory is that each generation belongs to one of four types, and that these types repeat sequentially in a fixed pattern. The vision of Generations allows us to plot a recurring cycle in American history -- a cycle of spiritual awakenings and secular crises -- from the founding colonists through the present day and well into this millenium. Generations is at once a refreshing historical narrative and a thrilling intuitive leap that reorders not only our history books but also our expectations for the twenty-first century.
