For instance, the wonderful patience, gaiety and cheerfulness of the people of green Alsace is eloquently expressed in the rhythm of their folk-songs, which are almost always dancing-songs. The sons of blue Lorraine, camped at the gates of France, had to be good warriors, so their folk-songs are, nearly all, marching-songs. In slate-coloured Champagne, where the soil is hard to work, the folk-songs are longer, deeper, more realistic with a heavier rhythm, and the melodies are not as impressive as in other more picturesque provinces, or even as in Upper Champagne, which is hilly and woody.
