Book Medieval Manuscripts in the Digital Age

Download or read book Medieval Manuscripts in the Digital Age written by Benjamin Albritton and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Manuscripts in the Digital Age explores one major manuscript repository's digital presence and poses timely questions about studying books from a temporal and spatial distance via the online environment. Through contributions from a large group of distinguished international scholars, the volume assesses the impact of being able to access and interpret these early manuscripts in new ways. The focus on Parker on the Web, a world-class digital repository of diverse medieval manuscripts, comes as that site made its contents Open Access. Exploring the uses of digital representations of medieval texts and their contexts, contributors consider manuscripts from multiple perspectives including production, materiality, and reception. In addition, the volume explicates new interdisciplinary frameworks of analysis for the study of the relationship between texts and their physical contexts, while centring on an appreciation of the opportunities and challenges effected by the digital representation of a tangible object. Approaches extend from the codicological, palaeographical, linguistic, and cultural to considerations of reader reception, image production, and the implications of new technologies for future discoveries. Medieval Manuscripts in the Digital Age advances the debate in manuscript studies about the role of digital and computational sources and tools. As such, the book will appeal to scholars and students working in the disciplines of Digital Humanities, Medieval Studies, Literary Studies, Library and Information Science, and Book History.

Book The Ellesmere Chaucer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Stevens
  • Publisher : Huntington Library Press
  • Release : 1997-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780873281669
  • Pages : 363 pages

Download or read book The Ellesmere Chaucer written by Martin Stevens and published by Huntington Library Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays was produced in conjunction with a full-size facsimile of the Huntington's Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The introductory essays and appendices, prepared by Woodward (Huntington Library) and Stevens (Graduate School, City University of New York), explain the significance and construction of the facsimile and summarize the conservation work done on the manuscript as the facsimile was in the making. Essays by fourteen internationally known British, American, and Japanese scholars discuss the physical construction of the Ellesmere manuscript, its decoration and illumination, its text and language, the ways in which the arrangement and presentation of the manuscript affect the meaning of the text, the order of tales in the manuscript, the relationship of this work to contemporary literary efforts and practices, and the provenance of the manuscript before its acquisition by Henry E. Huntington in 1917. As a reflection of the significance of this manuscript in an increasingly English-reading world, the volume concludes with a survey of Chaucer studies in Japan. There are fifty-seven illustrations in the book, supplemented by a separate color foldout that reproduces all of the famous Ellesmere illustrations of the pilgrim-storytellers.

Book Scribal Correction and Literary Craft

Download or read book Scribal Correction and Literary Craft written by Daniel Wakelin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensive survey of scribal correction in English manuscripts explores what correcting reveals about attitudes to books, language and literature in late medieval England. Daniel Wakelin surveys a range of manuscripts and genres, but focuses especially on poems by Chaucer, Hoccleve and Lydgate, and on prose works such as chronicles, religious instruction and practical lore. His materials are the variants and corrections found in manuscripts, phenomena usually studied only by editors or palaeographers, but his method is the close reading and interpretation typical of literary criticism. From the corrections emerge often overlooked aspects of English literary thinking in the late Middle Ages: scribes, readers and authors seek, though often fail to achieve, invariant copying, orderly spelling, precise diction, regular verse and textual completeness. Correcting reveals their impressive attention to scribal and literary craft - its rigour, subtlety, formalism and imaginativeness - in an age with little other literary criticism in English.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Manuscript Collections in the Huntington Library for the History of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries Mr. Huntington not only acquired collections of manuscripts but also purchased a large number of Single, unrelated items. This report excludes all miscellaneous material, regardless of importance, except certain volumes that seemed to be valuable as collateral to the collections that are included. Moreover, certain collections have been omitted - namely, all heterogeneous groups, and homogeneous groups of less than forty pieces (forty being a purely arbitrary figure chosen for technical reasons). The Library's few heterogeneous groups, notably the great collection of miscellanea assembled by Mr. W. K. Bixby, although acquired en bloc, have not been kept intact on the Shelves. Such assortments of papers and volumes bear no kinship to one another, are Without continuity, have no common origin, and, therefore, no longer exist as collections. Book The Archimedes Codex

    Book Details:
  • Author : Reviel Netz
  • Publisher : Da Capo Press
  • Release : 2009-03-12
  • ISBN : 078674538X
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book The Archimedes Codex written by Reviel Netz and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a Christie's auction in October 1998, a battered medieval manuscript sold for two million dollars to an anonymous bidder, who then turned it over to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore for further study. The manuscript was a palimpsest-a book made from an earlier codex whose script had been scraped off and the pages used again. Behind the script of the thirteenth-century monk's prayer book, the palimpsest revealed the faint writing of a much older, tenth-century manuscript. Part archaeological detective story, part science, and part history, The Archimedes Codex tells the extraordinary story of this lost manuscript, from its tenth-century creation in Constantinople to the auction block at Christie's, and how a team of scholars used the latest imaging technology to reveal and decipher the original text. What they found was the earliest surviving manuscript by Archimedes (287 b.c.-212 b.c.), the greatest mathematician of antiquity-a manuscript that revealed, for the first time, the full range of his mathematical genius, which was two thousand years ahead of modern science.

Book Apocalyptic Cartography

Download or read book Apocalyptic Cartography written by Chet Van Duzer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Apocalyptic Cartography: Thematic Maps and the End of the World in a Fifteenth-Century Manuscript, Chet Van Duzer and Ilya Dines analyse Huntington Library HM 83, an unstudied manuscript produced in Lübeck, Germany. The manuscript contains a rich collection of world maps produced by an anonymous but strikingly original cartographer. These include one of the earliest programs of thematic maps, and a remarkable series of maps that illustrate the transformations that the world was supposed to undergo during the Apocalypse. The authors supply detailed discussion of the maps and transcriptions and translations of the Latin texts that explain the maps. Copies of the maps in a fifteenth-century manuscript in Wolfenbüttel prove that this unusual work did circulate.
