Book The Israelite Woman

    Book Details:
  • Author : Athalya Brenner-Idan
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2014-11-20
  • ISBN : 0567657752
  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book The Israelite Woman written by Athalya Brenner-Idan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of The Israelite Woman Athalya Brenner-Idan provided the first book-length treatment by a feminist biblical scholar of the female characters in the Hebrew Bible. Now, thirty years later, Brenner provides a fresh take on this ground-breaking work, considering how scholarly observation of female biblical characters has changed and how it has not. Brenner-Idan also provides a new and highly personal introduction to the book, which details, perhaps surprisingly to present readers, what was at stake for female biblical scholars looking to engage honestly in the academic debate at the time in which the book was first written. This will make difficult reading for some, particularly those whose own views have not changed. The main part of the book presents Brenner-Idans's now classic examination of the roles of women in the society of ancient Israel, and the roles they play in the biblical narratives. In Part I Brenner-Idan surveys what can be known about the roles of queens, wise women, women poets and authors, prophetesses, magicians, sorcerers and witches and female prostitutes in Israelite society. In Part II the focus is on the typical roles in which Hebrew women appear in biblical stories, as mother of the hero, as temptress, as foreigner, and as ancestress. In these narratives, for which there are standard plots and structures and characterizations readily available, women play a generally domestic role. Not only is the book a highly valuable resource detailing the social role of women in ancient Israel, and showing how the interpretation of women in the bible has been influenced by convention, but it is also a challenging reminder of how outdated attitudes can still prevail.

Book The Ice Trader

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. R. Bridgman
  • Publisher : LifeRich Publishing
  • Release : 2015-12-17
  • ISBN : 1489705740
  • Pages : 173 pages

Download or read book The Ice Trader written by E. R. Bridgman and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WARNING: Slow readers, do not read before bed time! Fast readers, go ahead and dig for that happy(?) ending. The Ice Trader starts this intensely suspenseful and suspensefully intense tale deep in the past of our galaxy where the species were all benevolent. Then an outside force entered and destroyed the peace of the entire galaxy. Thousands of years later, one female alien is left upon Earth. Sickened by Earths viruses, germs and diseases, she struggles against all odds to finish her assignment: to prepare Earth for her kind to invade this blue planet for the sake of its abundant water. She and her friend, who died about a decade earlier, had taken many Earth people captive and made them icy meals. However, at the time the ability of the two was not enough to allow the upcoming invasion force to un-terra-form the Earth for their own kind and to make it into a second frigid home world, turning all humans into icy delicacies for the to trade with other species of the galaxy. Tom Andrews, the Earth-man hero, becomes the hero of not only the Earth, but of all species that remained true to their benevolent beginnings. The evil is eradicated and everything, except for the extinguished specie of extreme evil, returns back to normal in more ways than one. The author would recommend 99.999 percent of this book to the general readership of G-rated science fiction. The remainder, though not sexual, involves one rather intense scene on two pages of chapter eight that involves the alien female upon the lap of the yet-to-be hero, inquisitive as to the so-called romance packages that are vagrantly displayed upon Earth television and movies. One particular kind of a television program has her most intrigued: soap operas. Kids grow up too fast in todays culture, and it may not be suitable for pre-teens and some teenagers. There is no sex portrayed within the book, but the author would suggest that parents carefully read and determine their own childs individual ability before allowing them read it. Its on two pages within Chapter 8. The Ice Trader is full of intensity and suspense, but does not lack moments of humor, love, and romance. This is definitely one book not to be missed, and the ending alone is well-worth the read.

Book Temptress

  • Author : Jane Billinghurst

  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9781550549997
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Temptress written by Jane Billinghurst and published by New York : Greystone Books/Douglas & McIntyre Publishing Group. This book was released on 2004 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Jane Billinghurst, men created the idea of the temptress -- an irresistible woman bent on bringing them down -- to justify the fact that they so often surrender to women, especially in the bedroom. In this fascinating study, she examines this vision in history, mythology, in the Bible, artwork, and film. She traces the evolution of the temptress from an almost demonic presence in folklore to current in-your-face performers like Madonna. The changing image of the temptress reflects the ebb and flow of men's fears and fantasies, as well as women's self-possession and power. When men feel threatened by women's control, temptresses are seen as dangerous. When there is a lull in the battle of the sexes, these women become objects of fantasies. Billinghurst makes the case that when men begin to accept women as equals, the figure of the temptress will serve to accommodate both male and female desires.

Book Shakespeare Sex and the Print Revolution

Download or read book Shakespeare Sex and the Print Revolution written by Gordon Williams and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how the sexual element in Shakespeare's works is complicated and compromised by the impact of print. Whether the issue is one of censorship and evasion or sexual redefinition, the fact that Shakespeare wrote in the first century of popular print is crucial. Out of the newly-accessible classical canon he creates a reconstituted idea of the sexual temptress; and out of the Counter-Reformation propaganda he fashions his own complex thinking about the prostitute. Shakespeare's theatrical scripts, meeting-ground fro the spoken and written word, contribute powerfully to those socio-sexual debates which had been re-energized by print.

Book Gender Branding and the Modern Music Industry

Download or read book Gender Branding and the Modern Music Industry written by Kristin Lieb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Branding, and the Modern Music Industry combines interview data with music industry professionals with theoretical frameworks from sociology, mass communication, and marketing to explain and explore the gender differences female artists experience. This book provides a rare lens on the rigid packaging process that transforms female artists of various genres into female pop stars. Stars—and the industry power brokers who make their fortunes—have learned to prioritize sexual attractiveness over talent as they fight a crowded field for movie deals, magazine covers, and fashion lines, let alone record deals. This focus on the female pop star’s body as her core asset has resigned many women to being "short term brands," positioned to earn as much money as possible before burning out or aging ungracefully. This book, which includes interview data from music industry insiders, explores the sociological forces that drive women into these tired representations, and the ramifications for the greater social world.

Book Dirty Words

  • Author : Robin E. Jensen
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2010-12-03
  • ISBN : 0252035739
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Dirty Words written by Robin E. Jensen and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-12-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirty Words: The Rhetoric of Public Sex Education, 1870-1924, details the approaches and outcomes of sex-education initiatives in the Progressive Era. In analyzing the rhetorical strategies of sex education advocates, Robin E. Jensen engages with rich sources such as lectures, books, movies, and posters that were often shaped by female health advocates and instructors. She offers a revised narrative that demonstrates how women were both leaders and innovators in early U.S. sex-education movements, striving to provide education to underserved populations of women, minorities, and the working class. Investigating the communicative and rhetorical practices surrounding the emergence of public sex education in the United States, Jensen shows how women in particular struggled for a platform to create and circulate arguments concerning this controversial issue. The book also provides insight into overlooked discourses about public sex education by analyzing a previously understudied campaign targeted at African American men in the 1920s, offering theoretical categorizations of discursive strategies that citizens have used to discuss sex education over time, and laying out implications for health communicators and sexual educators in the present day.

Book The Promise of the Suburbs

Download or read book The Promise of the Suburbs written by Sarah Bilston and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the fast-growing Victorian suburbs as places of connection, creativity, and professional advance, especially for women Literature has, from the start of the nineteenth century, cast the suburbs as dull, vulgar, and unimaginative margins where, by definition, nothing important takes place. Sarah Bilston argues that such attitudes were forged to undermine the cultural authority of the emerging middle class and to reinforce patriarchy by trivializing women's work. Resisting these stereotypes, Bilston reveals that suburban life offered ambitious women, especially writers, access to supportive communities and opportunities for literary and artistic experimentation as well as professional advancement. Bilston interprets both familiar figures (sensation novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon) and less well-known writers (including interior design journalist Jane Ellen Panton and garden writer Jane Loudon) to reveal how women and society at large navigated a fast-growing, rapidly changing landscape. Far from being a cultural dead end, the new suburbs promised women access to the exciting opportunities of modernity.

Book Picturing Women in Late Medieval and Renaissance Art

Download or read book Picturing Women in Late Medieval and Renaissance Art written by Christa Grössinger and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively illustrated book discusses the representation of women in the art of the late Middle Ages in Northern Europe. Drawing on a wide range of different media, but making particular use of the rich plethora of woodcuts, the author charts how the images of women changed during the period and proposes two basic categories - the Virgin and Eve, good and evil. Within these, however, we discover attitudes to sinful, foolish, married and unmarried women and the style and use of these images exposes the full extent of the misogyny entrenched in medieval society.

Book The Specter of Dido

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Watkins
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 1995-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300058833
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book The Specter of Dido written by John Watkins and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book dismantles the stereotype of Spenser as one who blurs earlier epic traditions. John Watkins's examinations of Spenser's major poetry reveal a poet keenly attuned to dissonances among his classical, medieval, and early modern sources. By bringing Virgil into an intertextual dialogue with Chaucer, Ariosto, and Tasso, and several Neo-Latin commentators, Spenser transformed the most patriarchal of genres into a vehicle for praising the Virgin Queen.
