Book excerpt: Known as “The Salad Bowl of the World,” California’s Salinas Valley became an agricultural empire due to the toil of diverse farmworkers, including Latinos. A sweeping critical history of how Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants organized for their rights in the decades leading up to the seminal strikes led by Cesar Chavez, this important work also looks closely at how different groups of Mexicans—U.S. born, bracero, and undocumented—confronted and interacted with one another during this period. An incisive study of labor, migration, race, gender, citizenship, and class, Lori Flores’s first book offers crucial insights for today’s ever-growing U.S. Latino demographic, the farmworker rights movement, and future immigration policy.

Book Slavery Racism Genocide

Download or read book Slavery Racism Genocide written by Joshua MacLean and published by Joshua MacLean. This book was released on with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: quotes from the introduction [TRUNC]"I have studied the subjects of Slavery, Racism, and Genocide off and on since 2000,... I lost interest for some time until my passions were re-ignited by current events, leading to much reading on the subjects and many embittered arguements online.... It was 2016, three years after the formation of Black Lives Matter that I started researching the group in order to better understand their grievances and what they plan to accomplish, and also the methods by which they use to achieve those ambitions.... I could have started and ended my research with the organization's web site, however, the Black Lives Matter movement is not an organization in the traditional sense of the word, more of a loosely formed collaborative group, as Black Lives Matter has no central leadership, for this reason I centered my research on https://twitter.com/ and the #BlackLivesMatter hash tag." "Riots, arson, vandalism, looting in the streets, acts of violence; are these tolerable acts of civil disobedience? Are they symptoms of the chronic social disease known as "systemic racism"? In the mind's eye of the average Black Lives Matter supporter, are these acts respresentative of the violent freeing of themselves from the shackles of white oppression? Statistics, news articles, personal and historical accounts, would all suggest that this is fact, but in a nation such as the United States, where freedom of speech is touted daily as a God given right by protestors and counter protestors alike, nothing is free from the inquisitions of political discourse." "I will in the following sections address various issues that seem relevant to modern politics, such as segregation and affirmative action, as well as various claims that have been made about whites recently. Individual arguments can only accomplish so much, and I have reached that point, so now it is time to express my thoughts on various issues in book form. Some may consider this monologue a diatribe but I feel inspired to share my inner rumenations with you, the reader. Whether you love or hate this project, this is for you, and I hope that you give it a fair shot before dismissing it." In "Slavery Racism Genocide - The Big White Lie" I endeavor to tackle subjects related to three topics, the very topics for which the text has been named. I believed that a question/ answer format would be the best method to use in which to convey my rumenations on these matters. My writing is divided into three sections with questions in each section labeled "A, B, C, etc". Each of my questions is related to various opinions and arguments related to the three topics. The questions are not only related to different claims and arguments I have encountered on Twitter, but also to recent events. I address any specific issue by providing relevent information that will hopefully lead the reader to a more thorough understanding of each topic. I hold no reservations towards subject matter, as the most controversial subjects are actually the subjects that most often are the ones that need to be talked about, one such example being the re-institution of racial segregation within the United States.

Download or read book NAFTA and NAALC written by Lance Compa and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 25th anniversary edition of the NAFTA and NAALC monograph in the International Encyclopaedia of Laws, Labour Law and Industrial Relations is a comprehensive and up-to-date 270-page resource that contains essential background on the structure and operation of labour provisions in North American free trade agreements, including NAFTA, USMCA, CAFTA-DR, TPP, CPTPP, TTIP, CETA, EU-Mexico, and Canadian and US bilateral free trade agreements with partners in Latin America and around the world. It also contains a complete digest of all of the citizen petitions filed under the NAFTA labour side agreement since 1994. The monograph includes early petitions filed about trade union rights at the Honeywell and Echlin plants in Mexico, the McDonald's case in Canada, and the Washington Apple and DeCoster Egg cases in the United States – not to mention recent petitions filed about migrant worker rights under the H-2A and H-2B visa programs in the US. In addition to being the most complete compilation of NAALC cases in existence today, NAFTA and the NAALC Twenty-Five Years of North American Trade-Labour Linkage outlines the internal mechanics leading to the filing of a 2000 NAALC petition with the Government of Mexico about unequal treatment of migrant workers in the US, and describes changes in the treatment of petitions by US, Mexican and Canadian authorities over the last 25 years. It also contains a chapter that compares the NAALC to the OECD Guidelines for Multi-National Enterprises and highlights recent North American cases filed under the OECD Guidelines including the relatively lesser known 2004 Yucatan Markey Tex-Coco Tex petition, which was dual filed under both mechanisms, and dual petitions filed under NAALC and the OECD Guidelines about working conditions at Chedraui grocery stores in Southern California and Northern Mexico. Highlights in 25th anniversary edition include: the first reports issued under labour provisions of Canadian and US FTAs with Colombia; the latest developments in pending cases filed under CAFTA-DR and the US-Peru FTA, including the 2017 decision by the first ever Arbitral Panel established under the labour provision of CAFTA-DR in the Guatemala labour case; addition of the 2006 labour petition filed under the US-Jordan FTA; new sections comparing labour provisions in multi-lateral FTAs such as TPP, CPTPP, CETA, and the proposed TTIP; NAALC petitions filed with the Government of Mexico about sexism in recruitment for temporary agricultural labour programs in Canada and the United States; and a new chapter comparing the NAALC to labour provisions in the signed, but not-yet-ratified USMCA.
