Book Temporally Distinct Stages in Paired associate Verbal Learning

Download or read book Temporally Distinct Stages in Paired associate Verbal Learning written by Richard M. Schulman and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments to study possible differences in transfer between very early and early stages of List 1 learning are reported. Eight groups of Army enlisted men, 20 per group, learned one of four transfer paradigms to a List 1 criterion of either at least one item correct or at least half of the list correct, and a List 2 criterion of all correct. Paradigms used were A-B, C-A; A-B, A-D; A-B, A-Br; and the A-B, C-D control for warm-up and learning to learn. In Experiment 1, consonant vowel consonants were used for all verbal units; in Experiment 2, the List 2 responses were changed to high frequency of occurrence real words. Faster List 2 learning by the higher degree of List 1 learning in Experiment 1, but not in Experiment 2, was interpreted as supporting a two-stage conception of paired-associate learning.

Book From Conditioning to Conscious Recollection

Download or read book From Conditioning to Conscious Recollection written by Howard Eichenbaum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-18 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting-edge book offers a theoretical account of the evolution of multiple memory systems of the brain. The authors conceptualize these memory systems from both behavioral and neurobiological perspectives, guided by three related principles. First, that our understanding of a wide range of memory phenomena can be advanced by breaking down memory into multiple forms with different operating characteristics. Second, that different forms of memory representation are supported by distinct brain pathways with circuitry and neural coding properties. Third, that the contributions of different brain systems can be compared and contrasted by distinguishing between dedicated (or specific) and elaborate (or general) memory systems. A primary goal of this work is to relate the neurobiological properties of dedicated and elaborate systems to their neuropsychological counterparts, and in so doing, account for the phenomenology of memory, from conditioning to conscious recollection.

Book Imagery and Related Mnemonic Processes

Download or read book Imagery and Related Mnemonic Processes written by Mark A. McDaniel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific work on mnemonics and imagery conducted in the 1960s and early 1970s was directed at testing enthusiastic claims of the efficacy of memory tech niques developed by the ancient Greeks and further refined in the popular litera ture by "professional" mnemonists. The early research on imagery and mnemonics confirmed many of these claims and also illuminated the limitations of some techniques (e. g. , bizarre imagery). As such, these seminal studies clearly were valuable in providing a solid data base and, perhaps as important, making imagery and mnemonics acceptable research areas for experimental psycholo gists and educators. After this initial surge of work, however, it seemed that sub sequent contributions met with the attitude that "mnemonic techniques and imagery help memory, what else is new?" This attitude was not completely justi fied, however, given the theoretical insights from the work of such imagery and mnemonics pioneers as Gorden Bower, Allan Paivio, and William Rohwer. In the 1980s this claim is completely unjustified. Research on mnemonics and imagery has grown in exciting ways. Researchers are tapping the area's theoretical potential, both in terms of extending basic memory theories to account for the robust effects produced by mnemonic techniques and in terms of using explanations of mnemonic effects to understand basic memory processes. Individual differences in the use of imagery and mnemonic encoding activities are also being explored. This research has provided valuable information for basic memory theories (e. g.

Book New Directions in Memory and Aging PLE Memory

Download or read book New Directions in Memory and Aging PLE Memory written by Leonard Poon and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980, this book contains the proceedings from a memorial conference held in honour of George A. Talland, who made a significant contribution to the area of memory and aging. The major objective of the volume was to stimulate research towards a more comprehensive understanding of age related differences in memory. It was also hoped it would provide direction for the application and utilization of research findings in the evaluation and treatment of memory complaints and memory difficulties experienced by the elderly. The book was intended for two broad groups of scientists. The first being researchers in the psychology of memory, and those who were currently active in the research on aging at the time. The second group was those concerned with applying current research findings to the diagnosis and treatment of problems of memory.

Book The Neuropsychology Handbook

Download or read book The Neuropsychology Handbook written by Danny Wedding and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is primarily designed to serve as a basic reference for the practicing clinical and behavioral neuropsychologist and as a text for graduate study. In Part I the contributors present and overview of human neuropsychology and focus attention on internal and cross-discipline issues. Also presented are a discussion of the neurological foundations of human neuropsychology including theories of brain functioning, selected neurological disorders, and the lateralization of cerebral functions. Part II is devoted to assessment procedures and includes discussion of the physical neurological examination, the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery, the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychology Battery, and the Kaufman Assessment battery for children. Part III describes treatment approaches and includes single-case design, behavioral neuropsychology, cognitive retraining, and family therapy. Part IV presents a variety of special populations, such as the head injured, alcoholics, the aged, pediatric patients, and school-aged children, in which human neuropsychology is making its greatest impact. Part V provides a discussion of some emerging areas of clinical practice such as prediction of everyday behavior, legal issues, and computer applications.
