Book excerpt: This is an introductory text to the science of neurobiology, describing animal nervous systems, what they consist of, how they work, and how they are studied. Unlike many other neurobiology texts, considerable discussion is given to both human and non-human nervous systems. Written in an easy-to-read style, it will be useful for both biology and medical students. It provides the opportunity for self-testing at the end of each chapter, with objectives and questions. A CD-ROM entitled 'The Human Brain' (ISBN 3-540-14666-0) has been produced to accompany this text, and can be purchased either separately or together with the book (ISBN 3-540-63778-8).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary of research carried out in the CHOROCHRONOS Project, established as an EC-funded Training and Mobility Research Network with the objective of studying the design, implementation, and application of spatio-temporal database management systems. The nine coherent chapters by leading research groups are written in a tutorial style, making the research contributions of the project accessible to a wider audience interested in spatio-temporal information processing. Following an introductory overview, the book presents chapters on ontologies for spatio-temporal databases, conceptual models, spatio-temporal models and languages, access methods and query processing, architectures and implementation of spatio-temporal DBMS, interactive spatio-temporal documents, and future perspectives.

Book Time and Relational Theory

Download or read book Time and Relational Theory written by C.J. Date and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time and Relational Theory provides an in-depth description of temporal database systems, which provide special facilities for storing, querying, and updating historical and future data. Traditionally, database management systems provide little or no special support for temporal data at all. This situation is changing because: Cheap storage enables retention of large volumes of historical data in data warehouses Users are now faced with temporal data problems, and need solutions Temporal features have recently been incorporated into the SQL standard, and vendors have begun to add temporal support to their DBMS products Based on the groundbreaking text Temporal Data & the Relational Model (Morgan Kaufmann, 2002) and new research led by the authors, Time and Relational Theory is the only book to offer a complete overview of the functionality of a temporal DBMS. Expert authors Nikos Lorentzos, Hugh Darwen, and Chris Date describe an approach to temporal database management that is firmly rooted in classical relational theory and will stand the test of time. This book covers the SQL:2011 temporal extensions in depth and identifies and discusses the temporal functionality still missing from SQL.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief presents several new query processing techniques, called complex motion pattern queries, specifically designed for very large spatio-temporal databases of moving objects. The brief begins with the definition of flexible pattern queries, which are powerful because of the integration of variables and motion patterns. This is followed by a summary of the expressive power of patterns and flexibility of pattern queries. The brief then present the Spatio-Temporal Pattern System (STPS) and density-based pattern queries. STPS databases contain millions of records with information about mobile phone calls and are designed around cellular towers and places of interest. Density-based pattern queries capture the aggregate behavior of trajectories as groups. Several evaluation algorithms are presented for finding groups of trajectories that move together in space and time, i.e. within a predefined distance to each other. Finally, the brief describes a generic framework, called DivDB, for diversifying query results. Two new evaluation methods, as well as several existing ones, are described and tested in the proposed DivDB framework. The efficiency and effectiveness of all the proposed complex motion pattern queries are demonstrated through an extensive experimental evaluation using real and synthetic spatio-temporal databases. This clear evaluation of new query processing techniques makes Spatio-Temporal Database a valuable resource for professionals and researchers studying databases, data mining, and pattern recognition.

All papers submitted were refereed by an international team of data mining researchers listed below. We would like to thank the team for their expert and useful help with this process. Following the workshop, authors were invited to amend their papers to enable the feedback received from the conference to be included in the ?nal papers appearing in this volume. A workshop report was compiled by Kathleen Hornsby which also discusses the panel session that was held.

Book Temporal Data Temporal Data Models Temporal Data Languages and Temporal Database Systems

Download or read book Temporal Data Temporal Data Models Temporal Data Languages and Temporal Database Systems written by Donald Dokeung Hom and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of temporal database systems is relatively new in the field of computer science. Two developments have led to the present interest. The advances of the storage technology for large amounts of data and applications's requirement for time-dependent data have prompted our study of temporal databases. This thesis conducts a survey of the major research areas concerning temporal databases. Temporal data, taxonomies of temporal data models, temporal data languages, and temporal database systems are presented. It is argued here that future database systems should handle the temporal domain by an integrated temporal database system. By understanding the present technology and the need of temporal database systems, our research in the area of real-time temporal database systems can begin. It is the purpose of this thesis to provide the background information and research references of temporal database systems as a first step towards the real-time database system research. Real-time database systems are time-constrained and temporally constituted. Solutions in temporal database systems can contribute to the design of real-time military applications using temporal databases. (kr).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Need for database reasonably increased as the data manipulation changes and leverage for storage has become essential. Temporal database has been one of the special kinds in the field of database. According to the concept of time, stamping various models has emerged and temporal models namely; McKenzie, BenZvi’s, and non-temporal models namely; Colby, Deshpande and Larson’s model has grabbed unique attention towards in this area of temporal database. Reliable and Enhanced stratum middleware management capabilities enable the temporal queries for ease in transactions. Richness in point based and maximum timestamp approaches provide high indexing mechanisms, which make efficient storage of data in tree structure format. The proposed prototype model uses Temporal Relational Algebra and TSQL2 declarative language, which display the past, present and future related data. The inclusion of T4SQL instead of TSQL2, Temporal Multi-Secure Database and spatio-temporal database model can make this model stronger than present and make it work more efficiently.

Book Flexible Approaches in Data Information and Knowledge Management

Download or read book Flexible Approaches in Data Information and Knowledge Management written by Olivier Pivert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume showcases contributions from internationally-known researchers in the field of information management. Most of the approaches presented here make use of fuzzy logic, introduced by L.A. Zadeh almost 50 years ago, which constitute a powerful tool to model and handle gradual concepts. What all of these contributions have in common is placing the user at the center of the information system, be it for helping him/her to query a data set, to handle imperfect information, or to discover useful knowledge from a massive collection of data. Researchers working in data and knowledge management will greatly benefit from this collection of up-to-date studies. This may be also an invaluable source of information for postgraduate students interested in advanced information management techniques.
