Book Vadose Zone Hydrology

Download or read book Vadose Zone Hydrology written by Marc B. Parlange and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vadose zone is the region between ground level and the upper limits of soil fully saturated with water. Hydrology in the zone is complex: nonlinear physical, chemical, and biological interactions all affect the transfer of heat, mass, and momentum between the atmosphere and the water table. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to vadose zone hydrology, bringing together insights from soil science, hydrology, biology, chemistry, physics, and instrumentation design. The chapters present state-of-the-art research, focusing on new frontiers in theory, experiment, and management of soils. The collection addresses the full range of processes, from the pore-scale to field and landscape scales.

Book Structure and Function of a Chihuahuan Desert Ecosystem

Download or read book Structure and Function of a Chihuahuan Desert Ecosystem written by Kris M. Havstad and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-20 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jornada Basin LTER is located in the Chihuahuan Desert, the largest in North America. This region of south central New Mexico has a history of nearly 100 years as the basis for scientific research. This work gives a thorough, encompassing review of the tremendous array of observations resulting from experiments conducted in this ecosystem. Beginning with thorough descriptions of the most salient features of the region, the book then reviews a wide range of archived and active data sets on a diversity of biotic and abiotic features. It next presents a syntheses of important topics including livestock grazing and remediation efforts. A concluding chapter provides a synthesis of the principles that have emerged from this body of work, and how these relate to the broader fields of ecology and natural resource management. It concludes with recommendations for future research directions. The insightful views expressed in this volume should guide management of arid landscapes globally. This is the sixth volume in the Long Term Ecological Network Series.

Book The Future of Arid Grasslands

Download or read book The Future of Arid Grasslands written by Barbara Tellman and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference was designed to provide a non-confrontational setting for a variety of people from differing viewpoints to discuss the threats facing arid grasslands of the Southwest. Participants included ranchers and other private economists, scientists, and students. The sessions were organized around the major themes of understanding grasslands, identifying grassland issues, managing grasslands, and seeking solutions to grassland issues. Many of the sessions were in the form of panel discussions or informal presentations.

Book Arid and Semiarid Land Stewardship

Download or read book Arid and Semiarid Land Stewardship written by Peter F. Ffolliott and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) was established in 1990 to promote research, education, and training activities related to the development, management, and restoration or reclamation of arid and semiarid lands worldwide. The IALC, a leading international organization, supports ecological sustainability and development of arid and semiarid lands. Building on a decade of experience, IALC continues to increase the knowledge-base for managers by funding research, development, and demonstration projects, and special initiatives. The results from the scientific and technical projects enhance management and stewardship of arid and semiarid ecosystems for sustainable use, while maintaining the integrity of the ecological processes. The publication presents a review of the accomplishments and contributions of IALC's science and technical programs through a synopsis of the projects and initiatives. We group the projects and initiatives into soil and water resources development and conservation, land use and reclamation, processes enhancing the management of ecological systems, and inventorying and measurements techniques and monitoring.

Book Seasonal and Spatial Variations in Soil moisture Flow at a Semi arid Field Site

Download or read book Seasonal and Spatial Variations in Soil moisture Flow at a Semi arid Field Site written by Todd L. Stein and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seasonal and spatial variability of unsaturated soil-moisture was studies from December, 1987 and July, 1989, at a semiarid field site near Socorro, New mexico. The effects of desert plant water uptake on soil-moisture flow was examined in this study. The field site was instrumented with a variety of monitoring equipment which included; tensiometers, nuetron access tubes to monitor soil-moisture, soil temperature thermistors, and both an automated and a manula weather station. Both seasonal and spatial variabilities of soil-moisture profiles were detected from the nuetron probe measurements.
