Book excerpt: Arden Finch’s big dreams for her future risk becoming nightmares. After stopping the Wild Hunt and preventing the end of the world, Arden thought she could take a break. But the mundane backlash against supernaturals is getting worse, and Otherside abhors a power vacuum. When someone dumps a vampire-bitten corpse at the North Carolina governor’s mansion, tensions boil over. With rioting humans on one side and invading vampires on another, Arden must decide how far she’ll go to secure her authority as Arbiter. A step in the wrong direction will bring war to the Triangle and threaten everything Arden has built. And with the trickster gods stirring, all her illusions about power will be tested to see if they can stand the weight of this new world—or if they’ll shatter under the pressure. Arden, Troy, Maria, and your other favorites are back in the first book of the Shadows of Otherside Trickster Cycle. The stakes are higher and the danger is greater than ever before, forcing Arden to lean into new powers and leave the Triangle to deal with new threats. This book is set a year after the epilogue in Eternal Huntress and continues Arden Finch's story in the Otherside universe. If you'd like to start at the beginning of the series, read Elemental. Content warnings: This book contains strong physical violence and gore, on-page death, swearing, slurs (not toward any real racial or ethnic group/identity), alcohol use, knife violence, threat of sexual violence, mention of past abuse by a guardian, deadnaming, kidnapping, state-sanctioned violence, blood-drinking, and consensual on-page sex scenes.

Book excerpt: Venture deeper into the world of Otherside. While the main Shadows of Otherside series follows the story of Arden Finch, there is so much more going on behind the scenes and in other characters’ heads. Find out how alliances formed, the hidden agendas and secret pains of other characters, and what happens between books. Deeper Into the Shadows is a novel-length collection of bonus chapters from the points of view of Maria, Ninlil (Arden’s mother), Val, Troy, Allegra, Arden, and Darius. Take a walk into the shadows with them. This second edition contains a total of 32 chapters set in the Shadows of Otherside universe by Whitney Hill, including both previously shared and all-new content gathered together for the first time. In addition to new chapters, minor edits have been made from the first edition to improve quality and consistency with the main story. Please note that while some chapters can stand alone, others take place during events in the main series and may spoil unread books. Content warnings: This book contains references to death in childbirth, strong physical violence and gore, on-page death, suicidal ideation, nightmares about and memories of torture, discussions of mental health crises, family estrangement, swearing, slurs (not toward any real racial or ethnic group/identity), alcohol use, knife violence, threat of sexual violence, mention of past abuse by a guardian, blood-drinking, and consensual on-page sex scenes.

Book The Last Illusion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Herman Ganzevoort
  • Publisher : University of Calgary Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 1552380130
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book The Last Illusion written by Herman Ganzevoort and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, information about Dutch immigration to Canada has been scarce as much was lost during the German occupation of Holland during World War II. However, Herman Ganzevoort was able to unearth and translate rare letters and articles written by Dutch immigrants during the 1920s, which offer new insight into the struggles the Dutch faced to fit into their new country. The letters opened up the inner dimensions of the immigrants: the reasons for their emigration, their hopes, their fears, and, best of all, their experiences in Canada. These images are not reminiscences screened and filtered by the passage of time but are immediate and compelling. The writers of The Last Illusion: Letters from Dutch Immigrants in the "Land of Opportunity" 1924-1930 shared their feelings and showed an openness that was uncommon in their culture and time. Their words describe the pain caused by separation and loss, and the sense of shared joy and exhilaration when goals were reached.

Book Techniques of Illusion

Download or read book Techniques of Illusion written by Katharina Rein and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores stage conjuring during its “golden age,” from about 1860 to 1910. This study provides close readings highlighting four paradigmatic illusions of the time that stand in for different kinds of illusions typical of stage magic in the “golden age” and analyses them within their cultural and media-historical context: “Pepper’s Ghost,” the archetypical mirror illusion; “The Vanishing Lady,” staging a teleportation in a time of a dizzying acceleration of transport; “the levitation,” simulating weightlessness with the help of an extended steel machinery; and “The Second Sight,” a mind-reading illusion using up-to-date communication technologies. These close readings are completed by writings focusing on visual media and expanding the scope backwards and forwards in time, roughly to 1800 and to 2000. This exploration will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and performance studies.

Book The Ironic Temper and the Comic Imagination

Download or read book The Ironic Temper and the Comic Imagination written by Morton Gurewitch and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ironic Temper and the Comic Imagination examines and illuminates the role which the ironic temper plays in the creation of complex literary comedy. The book focuses on ironic comedy, though not of the kind that is characterized by the surprises and shocks, the incongruities and reversals, of circumstantial irony. Circumstantial—or situational—irony cannot stand alone; it serves, for example, the aggressive functions of satire, or the irrational impulses of farce, or the benevolent, whimsical, or pain-defeating energies of humor.

Book Unborn

  • Publisher : North Point Press
  • Release : 2020-01-21
  • ISBN : 0374601267
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Unborn written by Bankei and published by North Point Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1633, at age eleven, Bankei Yotaku was banished from his family's home because of his consuming engagement with the Confucian texts that all schoolboys were required to copy and recite. Using a hut in the nearby hills, he wrote the word Shugyo-an, or "practice hermitage," on a plank of wood, propped it up beside the entrance, and settled down to devote himself to his own clarification of "bright virtue." He finally turned to Zen and, after fourteen years of incredible hardship, achieved a decisive enlightenment, whereupon the Rinzai priest traveled unceasingly to the temples and monasteries of Japan, sharing what he'd learned. "What I teach in these talks of mine is the Unborn Buddha-mind of illuminative wisdom, nothing else. Everyone is endowed with this Buddha-mind, only they don't know it." Casting aside the traditional aristocratic style of his contemporaries, he offered his teachings in the common language of the people. His style recalls the genius and simplicity of the great Chinese Zen masters of the T'ang dynasty. This revised and expanded edition contains many talks and dialogues not included in the original 1984 volume.

Book excerpt: Discover the cognitive tools that lead to creative thinking and problem-solving with this “well-written and easy-to-follow” guide (Library Journal). Explore the “thinking tools” of extraordinary people, from Albert Einstein and Jane Goodall to Mozart and Virginia Woolf, and learn how you can practice the same imaginative skills to become your creative best. With engaging narratives and examples, Robert and Michèle Root-Bernstein investigate cognitive tools such as observing, recognizing patterns, modeling, playing, and more. Sparks of Genius is “a clever, detailed and demanding fitness program for the creative mind” and a groundbreaking guidebook for anyone interested in imaginative thinking, lifelong learning, and transdisciplinary education (Kirkus Reviews). “How different the painter at the easel and the physicist in the laboratory! Yet the Root-Bernsteins recognize the deep-down similarity of all creative thinking, whether in art or science. They demonstrate this similarity by comparing the accounts that various pioneers and inventors have left of their own creative processes: for Picasso just as for Einstein, for Klee just as for Feynman, the creative impulse always begins in vision, in emotion, in intuition. . . . With a lavishly illustrated chapter devoted to each tool, readers quickly realize just how far the imagination can stretch.” —Booklist “A powerful book . . . Sparks of Genius presents radically different ways of approaching problems.” —American Scientist
