Book excerpt: Mechanical engineers involved with flow mechanics have long needed an authoritative reference that delves into all the essentials required for experimentation in fluids, a resource that can provide fundamental review, as well as the details necessary for experimentation on everything from household appliances to hi-tech rockets. Instrumentation, Measurements, and Experiments in Fluids meets this challenge, as its author is not only a highly respected pioneer in fluids, but also possesses twenty years experience teaching students of all levels. He clearly explains fundamental principles as well the tools and methods essential for advanced experimentation. Reflecting an awe for flow mechanics, along with a deep-rooted knowledge, the author has assembled a fourteen chapter volume that is destined to become a seminal work in the field. Providing ample detail for self study and the sort of elegant writing rarely found in so thorough a treatment, he provides insight into all the vital topics and issues associated with the devices and instruments used for fluid mechanics and gas dynamics experiments. Extremely organized, this work presents easy access to the principles behind the science and goes on to elucidate the current research and findings needed by those seeking to make further advancement. Unique and Thorough Coverage of Uncertainty Analysis The author provides valuable insight into the vital issues associated with the devices used in fluid mechanics and gas dynamics experiments. Leaving nothing to doubt, he tackles the most difficult concepts and ends the book with an introduction to uncertainty analysis. Structured and detailed enough for self study, this volume also provides the backbone for both undergraduate and graduate courses on fluids experimentation.

Book Instrument Technology

Download or read book Instrument Technology written by E. B. Jones and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrument Technology, Volume 1 focuses on the instruments used in the measurement, recording, and control of critical variables in industrial processes. More specifically, measurements of pressure, liquid level in a tank or vessel, flow, and temperature are discussed. Instruments are classified according to the physical principle upon which they are based. The discussion begins by introducing the reader to the system of units of measurement used throughout the text. This topic is followed by four chapters, each dealing largely with the mathematics and physics of the instruments, which are classified according to the decimal system. The first chapter describes the principles on which the measurement of pressure and the transmission of force by a fluid depend. Before considering the actual methods of measuring pressure, the book first explains the difference between absolute and differential pressure. The second chapter discusses how the level of liquid in a tank or vessel is measured using direct methods and pressure-operated types. The third chapter focuses on the measurement of flow using quantity meters and rate-of-flow meters. The final chapter is concerned with temperatures measured on different thermometers and the two fixed points used to compare such measurements: the lower fixed point (ice-point) and the upper fixed point (steam-point). This book is intended for instrument and chemical engineers, as well as for students studying both craftsmen and technician courses.

Book Measurement of Temperature and Chemical Composition

Download or read book Measurement of Temperature and Chemical Composition written by B E Noltingk and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement of Temperature and Chemical Composition is the second in a four-volume series of Instrument Technology. The first volume grouped the measurements of mechanical quantities. The present volume covers two broad subjects of very wide interest—temperature and chemical composition—both of which are important for process control. The book begins with a discussion of concepts of temperature and other heat-related phenomena. It also describes various instruments for measuring temperature. This is followed by separate chapters on chemical analysis (chromatography, thermal analysis, and polarography); analysis of substances by spectroscopic techniques; electrochemical techniques; gas analysis; and moisture measurement. This book will be a valuable resource in the in the training of technicians, and indeed in the training and understanding of many folk who need to have some knowledge of instrumentation. It also attempts to tread a balanced path between the expounding of fundamental science and the description of trivial practical details.
