Download or read book Variational Methods in Mathematical Physics written by Philippe Blanchard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition (in German) had the prevailing character of a textbook owing to the choice of material and the manner of its presentation. This second (translated, revised, and extended) edition, however, includes in its new parts considerably more recent and advanced results and thus goes partially beyond the textbook level. We should emphasize here that the primary intentions of this book are to provide (so far as possible given the restrictions of space) a selfcontained presentation of some modern developments in the direct methods of the cal culus of variations in applied mathematics and mathematical physics from a unified point of view and to link it to the traditional approach. These modern developments are, according to our background and interests: (i) Thomas-Fermi theory and related theories, and (ii) global systems of semilinear elliptic partial-differential equations and the existence of weak solutions and their regularity. Although the direct method in the calculus of variations can naturally be considered part of nonlinear functional analysis, we have not tried to present our material in this way. Some recent books on nonlinear functional analysis in this spirit are those by K. Deimling (Nonlinear Functional Analysis, Springer, Berlin Heidelberg 1985) and E. Zeidler (Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Its Applications, Vols. 1-4; Springer, New York 1986-1990).

Download or read book Theory of Nuclear Fission written by Hans J. Krappe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together various aspects of the nuclear fission phenomenon discovered by Hahn, Strassmann and Meitner almost 70 years ago. Beginning with an historical introduction the authors present various models to describe the fission process of hot nuclei as well as the spontaneous fission of cold nuclei and their isomers. The role of transport coefficients, like inertia and friction in fission dynamics is discussed. The effect of the nuclear shell structure on the fission probability and the mass and kinetic energy distributions of the fission fragments is presented. The fusion-fission process leading to the synthesis of new isotopes including super-heavy elements is described. The book will thus be useful for theoretical and experimental physicists, as well as for graduate and PhD students.

Book excerpt: The first edition of "The Stability of Matter: From Atoms to Stars" was sold out after a time unusually short for a selecta collection and we thought it ap propriate not just to make a reprinting but to include eight new contributionso They demonstrate that this field is still lively and keeps revealing unexpected featureso Of course, we restricted ourselves to developments in which Elliott Lieb participated and thus the heroic struggle in Thomas-Fermi theory where 7 3 5 3 the accuracy has been pushed from Z 1 to Z 1 is not includedo A rich landscape opened up after Jakob Yngvason's observation that atoms in magnetic fields also are described in suitable limits by a Thomas-Fermi-type theoryo Together with Elliott Lieb and Jan Philip Solovej it was eventually worked out that one has to distinguish 5 regionso If one takes as a dimensionless measure of the magnetic field strength B the ratio Larmor radius/Bohr radius one can compare it with N "' Z and for each of the domains 4 3 (i) B « N 1 , 4 3 (ii) B "' N 1 , 4 3 3 (iii) N 1« B « N , 3 (iv) B "' N , 3 (v) B » N a different version ofmagnetic Thomas-Fermi theory becomes exact in the limit N --+ ooo In two dimensions and a confining potential ("quantum dots") the situation is somewhat simpler, one has to distinguish only (i) B « N, (ii) B "'N,
Download or read book A Course in Mathematical Physics written by Walter Thirring and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this final volume I have tried to present the subject of statistical mechanics in accordance with the basic principles of the series. The effort again entailed following Gustav Mahler's maxim, "Tradition = Schlamperei" (i.e., filth) and clearing away a large portion of this tradition-laden area. The result is a book with little in common with most other books on the subject. The ordinary perturbation-theoretic calculations are not very useful in this field. Those methods have never led to propositions of much substance. Even when perturbation series, which for the most part never converge, can be given some asymptotic meaning, it cannot be determined how close the nth order approximation comes to the exact result. Since analytic solutions of nontrivial problems are beyond human capabilities, for better or worse we must settle for sharp bounds on the quantities of interest, and can at most strive to make the degree of accuracy satisfactory.
Download or read book Modern Density Functional Theory A Tool For Chemistry written by P. Politzer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-01-27 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Density Functional Theory (DFT) is currently receiving a great deal of attention as chemists come to realize its important role as a tool for chemistry. This book covers the theoretical principles of DFT, and details its application to several contemporary problems. All current techniques are covered, many are critically assessed, and some proposals for the future are reviewed. The book demonstrates that DFT is a practical solution to the problems standard ab initio methods have with chemical accuracy. The book is aimed at both the theoretical chemist and the experimentalist who want to relate their experiments to the governing theory. It will prove a useful and enduring reference work.

Book excerpt: Thi's book collects the contributions to the NATO Advanced Research WJrkshop on "FundaIrental Aspects of Quantum 'Iheory," held at the Centro di Cultura Scientifica "Alessandro Volta," Villa Olma, Carro, Italy, 2-7 September 1985. The rreeting was dedicated to the rremory of the late pro fessor Piero Caldirola, a prominent member of the Physics Departrrent of the University of r1ilan and a native of Como. The aim of the workshop has been to present several recent experi rrental results and theoretical developrrents concerning the various fa cets of quantum physics. The breadth of scope of the rreeting was in accordance with Professor Caldirola's vast scientific interests, and fostered communication among experirrental physicists, theoretical and mathematical physicists, and nEthematicians, working in different but related fields. Indeed, lectu rers endeavoured to make their contributions understandable to people acquainted with the problem but not necessarily familiar with the tech nical details; and these efforts were successful, as indicated by the frequent private discussions which took place among participants belon ging to different breeds and brands. 1ne rreeting was made up of six one-day sessions, each of them addres sing to a specific aspect of quantum theory: 1. General Problems and Crucial Experinents; with emphasis on sin gle-particle interference eh rirrents of neutrons and of photons, and on the rreasurerrent problem. 2. Quantization and Stochastic Processes; including stochastic quan tization of gauge fields, stochastic description of supersyrnmetric fields, quantum stochastic calculus and stochastic mechanics."
