Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymn Book and Minstrel: A Collection of Hymns, Songs and Odes, for Temperance Meetings and Festivals Frequent enquiries for a Temperance Hymn Book have led to this compilation. Wesley said years ago, it was a pity Satan should have all the best tunes. The same may as properly be said of songs, which have contributed much to intemperance. Surely it is time that both music and song which have been thus perverted, should at once be rescued to the aid of tern, perance. The numerous beautiful poetical effusions on the subject, now enable us to present a valuable compilation. It is hoped that it will prove acceptable and useful to the American public; - valuable not only in temperance meetings, but in families, forming tho minds and hearts of children and youth to an abhorrence of those intoxicating drinks, which have slain their millions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it isn't the official national anthem, America may be the most important and interesting patriotic song in our national repertoire. Sweet Freedom's Song: "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and Democracy in America is a celebration and critical exploration of the complicated musical, cultural and political roles played by the song America over the past 250 years. Popularly known as My Country 'Tis of Thee and as God Save the King/Queen before that this tune has a history as rich as the country it extols. In Sweet Freedom's Song, Robert Branham and Stephen Hartnett chronicle this song's many incarnations over the centuries. Colonial Americans, Southern slaveowners, abolitionists, temperance campaigners and labor leaders, among others, appropriated and adapted the tune to create anthems for their own struggles. Because the song has been invoked by nearly every grassroots movement in American history, the story of America offers important insights on the story of democracy in the United States. An examination of America as a historical artifact and cultural text, Sweet Freedoms Song is a reflection of the rebellious spirit of Americans throughout our nations history. The late Robert James Branham and his collaborator, Stephen Hartnett, have produced a thoroughly-researched, delightfully written book that will appeal to scholars and patriots of all stripes.

Book excerpt: Examines the introduction of grape juice into the celebration of Holy Communion in the late 19th century Methodist Episcopal Church and reveals how a 1,800-year-old practice of using fermented communion wine became theologically incomprehensible in a mere forty years This work examines the introduction of grape juice into the celebration of Holy Communion in the late 19th century Methodist Episcopal Church and reveals how a 1,800-year-old practice of using fermented communion wine became theologically incomprehensible in a mere forty years. Through study of denominational publications, influential exegetical works, popular fiction and songs, and didactic moral literature, Jennifer Woodruff Tait charts the development of opposing symbolic associations for wine and grape juice. She argues that 19th century Methodists, steeped in Baconian models of science and operating from epistemological presuppositions dictated by common-sense realism, placed a premium on the ability to perceive reality accurately in order to act morally. They therefore rejected any action or substance that dulled or confused the senses (in addition to alcohol, this included “bad” books, the theatre, stimulants, etc., which were all seen as unleashing unchecked, ungovernable thoughts and passions incompatible with true religion). This outlook informed Methodist opposition to many popular amusements and behaviors, and they decided to place on the communion table a substance scientifically and theologically pure. Grape juice was considered holy because it did not cloud the mind, and new techniques—developed by Methodist laymen Thomas and Charles Welch—permitted the safe bottling and shipment of the unfermented juice. Although Methodists were not the only religious group to oppose communion wine, the experience of this broadly based and numerous denomination illuminates similar beliefs and actions by other groups.

Book Temperance Hymn book

Download or read book Temperance Hymn book written by and published by . This book was released on 1873 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This little collection of Temperance Hymns has been compiled during leisure hours, to meet a want long felt and often expressed by many friends of the cause, and is published with the earnest hope that it may contribute to the interest and enjoyment of public and social gatherings for temperance. The aim has been to select hymns adapted to old familiar tunes, giving the first line of music of each, so that any one can 'start the tune,' and when started, every one can sing without notes. A large number of hymns and tunes are given, specially adapted to Temperance Prayer Meetings, which are now being held with so much interest and benefit in very many places. The Odes of the Sons of Temperance, Good Templars, and Templars of Honor are also given, making the book a valuable 'pocket companion' for all occasions" -- Preface.

Book Counterfeiting Labor s Voice

Download or read book Counterfeiting Labor s Voice written by Mark A. Lause and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confidence man and canny operative, charlatan and manipulator--William A. A. Carsey emerged from the shadow of Tammany Hall to build a career undermining working-class political organizations on behalf of the Democratic Party. Mark A. Lause’s biography of Carsey takes readers inside the bare-knuckle era of Gilded Age politics. An astroturfing trailblazer and master of dirty tricks, Carsey fit perfectly into a Democratic Party that based much of its post-Civil War revival on shattering third parties and gathering up the pieces. Lause provides an in-depth look at Carsey’s tactics and successes against the backdrop of enormous changes in political life. As Carsey used a carefully crafted public persona to burrow into unsuspecting organizations, the forces he represented worked to create a political system that turned voters into disengaged civic consumers and cemented America’s ever-fractious two-party system.
