Book Temperament Patterns in Families of Individuals with Anorexia Nervosa

Download or read book Temperament Patterns in Families of Individuals with Anorexia Nervosa written by Miriam Joy Jacobs and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with behavioral traits that predate onset of AN and persist after recovery. The present study investigates the behavioral traits of AN probands and their parents and seeks to identify characteristic clusters of traits occurring within and among AN trios. Data were collected as part of the Price Foundation multi-site genetic study of AN. The sample included (a) 433 complete AN trios (proband plus two biological parents) and (b) 697 healthy control women. Measures included the TCI, MPS, Y-BOCS, YBC-EDS, EDI-2, STAI, BIS-11, and NEO PI-R. Data analysis included latent profile analysis (LPA) and MANCOVA with post-hoc comparisons. Comparisons between AN probands and healthy comparison women revealed consistent personality, temperament, and affective differences between groups. Characteristics of the latent classes varied depending on the subgroup investigated; classes were distinguished by degrees of harm avoidance, neuroticism, cooperativeness, and self-directedness. Harm avoidance and neuroticism were inversely related to cooperativeness and self-directedness. Probands and mothers, respectively, were distinguished by levels of state and trait anxiety. Fathers and mothers, respectively, were distinguished by levels of body dissatisfaction. Probands' clinical status, but not illness subtype, was significantly related to class membership. AN trios were distinguished by mothers' and probands' drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, perfectionism, neuroticism, trait anxiety, and harm avoidance. All three classes of trios reported elevated proband OC symptoms. Results confirm that the temperament and personality characteristics of AN probands and their parents significantly differ from those of healthy comparison women. Distinct classes of probands, parents, and trios were identified. The classes were distinguished by the level of pathology on selected variables rather than by qualitative pattern differences. A small number of variables discriminated between classes within the subgroups investigated. Use of these variables may facilitate shorter, more efficient assessment batteries and may be used prospectively to identify risk factors for AN. Identification of key temperament, personality, and affective differences among AN families may facilitate improved patient-treatment match. Findings related to to mothers and daughters highlight the need for further investigation into the relative contributions of genetic and psychosocial factors in the onset and maintenance of psychopathology related.

Book Temperament as a Risk Factor in the Development of Anorexia

Download or read book Temperament as a Risk Factor in the Development of Anorexia written by Cara M. McCanse and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anorexia Nervosa is a life-threatening illness that affects a large number of women, young and old. Because the etiology of this eating disorder is often viewed as multifaceted and diverse, treatment providers have struggled to find the bestmethod for helping these individuals. Recently, eating disorder literature has focused on a specific temperament or personality profile as a risk factor for the development and maintenance of Anorexia. Although a great deal of research has been performed on the aggregation of Anorexia (AN) in families and the personality dimensions of women who are diagnosed with AN, little research has looked at common personality dimensions between parents and their AN daughters. This is important to study because an awareness that a family has an underlying "AN temperament" can help researchers and treatment providers to look at one sibling who has developed AN, in comparison to another who has not, and hopefully pinpoint what environmental stressors contribute to the development of the disorder. This could eventually have significant implications for the treatment of AN. The results of the small amount of research that has been executed on this topic are contradictory. This study aimed to clarify these results and add to eating disorder literature by using the Temperament and Character Inventory to study the correlation of parents' temperament and that of their daughters who have been diagnosed with anorexia. One significant correlation was found, on the Cooperativeness dimension, and there were positive correlations between parents and daughters on many of the temperament and character dimensions. Likewise, mothers tended to have a similar temperament profile of their AN daughters. Further research would benefit from larger samples of parents and daughters to see if other significant correlations do exist.

Download or read book My Kid Is Back written by June Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Kid is Back explains how family-based treatment can greatly reduce the severity of anorexia nervosa in children and adolescents, allowing the sufferer to return to normal eating patterns, and their families to return to normal family life. In this book, ten families share their experiences of living with anorexia. Parents describe their frustrations in seeking help for their child and dealing with their behaviour and sufferers discuss how the illness gets into their mind and takes over their personality. By focusing on the Maudsley family approach and expert advice from Professor Daniel Le Grange, and including clear lists of illness symptoms, strategies for parents and carers to follow, and information on getting further treatment and support, this book proves an essential resource for families who want to win the battle with anorexia nervosa.

Book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Download or read book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology written by Henry E. Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 967 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook, originally published in 1984, was to provide a compreh- sive review of current clinical descriptions, research , and theories of psychopathology. Descriptive psychopathology is a ?eld that forms the foundation of clinical practice and research in clinical psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric social work, psychiatric nursing, and allied professions in mental health. Since the 1st edition, the editors have devised and updated a handbook to cover both general and speci?c topics in psychopathology that would be useful to researchers, practitioners, and graduate or other advanced students in the mental health and behavioral medicine professions. To implement this plan, we have very carefully chosen colleagues whom we respect for their expertise in particular ?elds. These authors include both clinicians and researchers who have outstanding national reputations, as well as more junior behavioral scientists and clinicians who, in our opinion, will achieve similar recognition in the future. The excellent chapters in this book lead us to believe that we have chosen wisely. We would like to express our appreciation to these authors for their outstanding contributions and cooperation.
