Download or read book A Dictionary of Japanese Loanwords written by Toshie M. Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-05-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies report that Japanese is the second most productive source of new loanwords to English. Such studies indicate that English-speaking countries are paying more attention to Japan than ever before. This dictionary lists and defines hundreds of terms borrowed from Japanese that are now used in English-language publications. Entries provide variant spellings, pronunciation, etymological information, definitions, and illustrative quotations. These quotations were collected from books, newspapers, magazines, novels, texts, advertisements, and databases published or distributed in the United States between 1964 and 1995. When countries engage in a significant amount of commercial or cultural contact, they frequently borrow words from each other's language. These loanwords are assimilated to varying degrees and show how one country gains exposure to another country's culture. Recent studies report that Japanese is the second most productive source of new loanwords to English, showing that English-speaking countries are paying more attention to Japan than ever before. This dictionary includes entries for hundreds of Japanese terms now used in English-language publications. Included are terms from art and architecture, medicine and the sciences, business and education, philosophy and religion, and numerous other fields. Entries provide definitions, pronunciations, variant spellings, etymological histories, and illustrative quotations. These quotations were collected from books, newspapers, magazines, novels, texts, advertisements, and databases, all of which were published or distributed in the United States between 1964 and 1995. While the volume is a valuable guide to the meaning and assimilation of particular loanwords, it is also a fascinating chronicle of how certain elements of Japanese culture have strongly influenced American civilization.

Book Archaeology of the Ryukyu Islands

Download or read book Archaeology of the Ryukyu Islands written by Richard Pearson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological excavations have produced findings showing many important relationships between the culture of the Ryukyu Islands and that of surrounding areas, especially the islands of Kyushu and Taiwan. The present study is a synthesis of findings from excavations in Kyushu and the Ryukyus, particularly those contributed by Japanese researchers published in the last decade and those resulting from recent fieldwork on the east coast of Taiwan. From his own excavations .and those of other archaeologists, the author has formulated phases of cultural development and has related them in a regional temporal framework. Included here is an extensive, detailed analysis of ceramic typology for southern Kyushu and proposed ceramic types and wares for the Ryukyus and Taiwan. The author suggests that cultural differences between Kyushu and the Ryukyus may have resulted from the isolation of small colonizing groups and through the interaction of the inhabitants with differing environments. An important contribution to the literature on Far Eastern prehistory, this book also places Ryukyuan culture in the context of related neighboring cultures, and it should be of interest to anyone concerned with East Asian cultural history.

  • ISBN : 9811011303
  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book History of Zen written by Yu-hsiu Ku and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells about the "History of Zen" in China and Japan. It has altogether 16 chapters. The first eight chapters are about Zen in China and the later eight chapters about Zen in Japan. It is mainly concerned with a detailed account of inheriting lineage and sermons of different Zen schools and sects in China and Japan as well as the specific facts of Chinese monks crossing over to Japan for preaching and Japanese monks coming to China for studying. Chan (Zen) Buddhism first arose in China some fifteen hundred years ago, with Bodhidarma or Daruma being the First Patriarch. It would go on to become the dominant form of Buddhism in China in the late Tang Dynasty, absorbing China’s local culture to form a kind of Zen Buddhism with Chinese characteristics. Zen Buddhism has not only exerted considerable influence on Chinese society and culture throughout its history, but has also found its way into Japan and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The lineage charts at the end of the book, collected by the author from different corners of the world, represent an invaluable resource. Further, the works and views on Zen of Western scholars introduced in this book are of great reference value for the Zen world.
