Download or read book Les Chiens Andalous written by Manuel Ocampo and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the catalogue of an exhibition of paintings and works on paper curated by artist Manuel Ocampo and featuring work by Ocampo and three of Spain's most dynamic contemporary artists: Patricio Cabrera, Chema Cobo, and Curro González. Of the many brilliant artists that the Philippine-born Ocampo met during his sojourn in Seville, the three he has included in this exhibition-Cabrera, Cobo, and González-inspired his deepest admiration. Ocampo writes in his introduction, "All three painters have established careers in their native country, so I am by no means trying to organize a show featuring a new trend in Spanish art or a survey of Andalusian artists. I have noticed, however, that only a very small number of Spanish artists are widely known in the U.S. and internationally. This exhibition is my attempt to broaden an appreciation of Spanish painters, with a focus on the province I love most.""Les Chiens Andalous" combines four outstanding artists whose visions are fortified with historical and political awareness, yet tinged with what Ocampo calls "Spanish surrealism's twisted logic." Citing the Luis Buñuel film from which the exhibition takes its name, he points out: "What the movie is notorious for is the scene depicting what some consider the most violent act committed against the eye in film history. I hope the works included in this show attack the visual senses in a similarly positive and liberating way."Texts: Introduction by Manuel Ocampo. Essay by Kevin Power. Kevin Power interviews the artists.

Book Instrumental

Download or read book Instrumental written by James Rhodes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An intense, eloquent, and appropriately furious memoir with the transporting beauty of classical music . . . The cumulative effect of the literary concert [Rhodes] gives in these pages is transcendence, both for him and for the reader." --Los Angeles Review of Books “A mesmeric combination of vivid, keen, obsessive precision and raw, urgent energy.” --Zoe Williams, The Guardian James Rhodes's passion for music has been his lifeline--the thread that has held through a life encompassing abuse and turmoil. But whether listening to Rachmaninov on a loop as a traumatized teenager or discovering a Bach adagio while in a hospital ward, he survived his demons by encounters with musical miracles. These--along with a chance encounter with a stranger--inspired him to become the renowned concert pianist he is today. Instrumental is a memoir like no other: unapologetically candid, boldly outspoken, and surprisingly funny--shot through with a mordant wit, even in its darkest moments. A feature film adaptation of Rhodes's incredible story is now in development from Monumental Pictures and BBC Films, following a competitive bidding war involving major U.S. and U.K. companies. An impassioned tribute to the therapeutic powers of music, Instrumental also weaves in fascinating facts about how classical music actually works and about the extraordinary lives of some of the great composers. It explains why and how music has the potential to transform all of our lives.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Querido Doctorcito written by Frida Kahlo and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main body of the book is the facsimile and transcription of the collection of the manuscript and typed letters and telegraphs mailed between artist Frida Kahlo and doctor Leo Eloesser, and enriched with contributions written by experts in art and medicine such as Carlos Monsivais, Teresa del Conde, Juan Pascoe, and others. The group of letters corresponds to 3 phases covering from 1936 to 1951: The first part reflects a courteous friendship and a paternal relationship of total confidence and where she consults him for all medical and personal matters. The second part of the correspondence airs her political feelings about the Spanish Civil War, the refuges arriving in Mexico and Diego Rivera's health. The third part of the correspondence marks an important shift, when the 2 protagonists adopt a more informal tone and where Kahlo confides her several love affairs and medical problems, and although during this period she painted extensively she does not mention it as she didn't believe in her own success stamped. These letters suggest that there was more than just a caring friendship between them while also represent the heartbreaking confessions by Kahlo after she lost the baby she was expecting with her husband Diego Rivera.

In this extraordinary book, Lynn Kern Koegel, a leading clinician, researcher, and cofounder of the renowned Autism Research Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara, combines her cutting-edge expertise with the everyday perspectives of Claire LaZebnik, a writer whose experience with a son with autism provides a rare window into the disorder. Together, they draw on the highly effective “pivotal response” approach developed at the center to provide concrete ways of improving the symptoms of autism and the emotional struggles that surround it, while reminding readers never to lose sight of the humor that lurks in the disability’s quirkiness or the importance of enjoying your child.
