Book Languages and Literary Cultures in Hyderabad

Download or read book Languages and Literary Cultures in Hyderabad written by Kousar J Azam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is great interest in recent scholarship in the study of metropolitan cultures in India as evident from the number of books that have appeared on cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. Though Hyderabad has a rich archive of history scattered in many languages, very few attempts have been made to bring this scholarship together. The papers in this volume bring together this scholarship at one place. They trace the contribution of different languages and literary cultures to the multicultural mosaic that is the city of Hyderabad How it has acquired this uniqueness and how it has been sustained is the subject matter of literary cultures in Hyderabad. This work attempts to trace some aspects of the history of major languages practiced in the city. It also reviews the contribution of the various linguistic groups that have added to the development not just of varied literary cultures, but also to the evolution of an inclusive Hyderabadi culture. The present volume, it is hoped, will enthuse both younger and senior scholars and students to take a fresh look at the study of languages and literary cultures as they have evolved in India's cities and add to the growing scholarship of metropolitan cultures in India.

Book Art and Culture of Marginalised Nomadic Tribes in Andhra Pradesh

Download or read book Art and Culture of Marginalised Nomadic Tribes in Andhra Pradesh written by P. Sadanandam and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is rich in its oral tradition. Its antiquity defies historical inquiry. Indian folklore offers diversity in the forms of expression while retaining the unity of theme, i.e. Dharma., The forms may be changing periodically to suit the times. The purpose of these popular art forms has been the same in a way as the classical arts. They provide education through entertainment. Andhra Desa, comprising roughly the present state of Andhra Pradesh, is very significant in its folk tradition in variety of forms. Numerous producing and service castes so far maintained their own sub castes of bards to retain their collective memory of the community and family histories besides propagating the Puranic knowledge and stories from great epics. The dependent sub-castes who have been so far preserving these arts and ancient knowledge are speedily disappearing due to lack of patronage and changing life-style. In this context, this book, the result of a painstaking research involving lot of field work may serve as a tribute to those unselfish barefoot narrators and preservers of history of bygone ages.

Book Text and Tradition in South India

Download or read book Text and Tradition in South India written by Velcheru Narayana Rao and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Velcheru Narayana Rao's contribution to understanding Indian cultural history, literary production, and intellectual life—specifically from the vantage of the Andhra region—has few parallels. He is one of the very rare scholars to be able to reflect magisterially on the precolonial and colonial periods. He moves easily between Sanskrit and the vernacular traditions, and between the worlds of orality and script. This is because of his mastery of the "classical" Telugu tradition. As Sanjay Subrahmanyam puts it in his Introduction, "To command nearly a thousand years of a literary tradition is no small feat, but more important still is VNR's ability constantly to offer fresh readings and provocative frameworks for interpretation." The essays and reflections in Text and Tradition in South India bring together the diverse and foundational contributions made by Narayana Rao to the rewriting of India's cultural and literary history. The book is for anyone interested in the history of Indian ideas, the social and cultural history of South India, and the massive intellectual traditions of the subcontinent.

Book Shaaka Paakam Vegetarian Culinary Culture Of Telugu Andhra Draavida Community Of South India

Download or read book Shaaka Paakam Vegetarian Culinary Culture Of Telugu Andhra Draavida Community Of South India written by Meenakshi Ganti and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-06-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present the traditional vegetarian recipes of a specific region in the vast Indian subcontinent and thereby illustrate a part of this vast diversity by focusing on the traditional vegetarian cooking practiced in the state of Andhra Pradesh in South India. There are variations even within this region and the presentation here pertains to a specific region in Northern Andhra Pradesh where our ancestors lived for several centuries. Indian food is often identified with curry and the menu is standardized into a set of items and marketed worldwide with minor variations. People are increasingly being forced by circumstances to fit themselves into a lifestyle that is dominated by globally marketed menu. Vegetarian food isregarded worldwide as healthy. In reality, the variety of Indian vegetarian food items alone is as vast as the Subcontinent itself and capturing all its rich diversity in a single book is by no means a simple task. Despite the availability of a gallery of cook books, the absence of a single comprehensive publication on this subject is therefore understandable. One often finds only a broad classification into North- and South-Indian cooking but no further focus on the finer and nicer elements of the vast mosaic of the actual reality. There is no serious attempt in this book to present the nutritional and medicinal values of the various food materials and their use in recipes in this book. The Encyclopedia of life Support Systems (EOLSS) now available online at www.eolss.net may be consulted for such information.

Whether it's listening to epic stories or observing rituals in the puja room, there are many moments that make this time together special. In this beautiful, rhyming ode to bedtime, the only thing more universal than getting ready for bed and saying goodnight is the love between children and their grandparents. "Nadia Salomon’s Goodnight Ganesha reminds readers that saying goodnight is both universal and unique and that all children deserve bedtime books that reflect their experiences and culture." --Hallee Adelman, author of My Quiet Ship "A pair of parallel poems, both steeped in references to India and Hinduism, form this stunningly illustrated tribute to family rituals [with] gorgeous, classically stylized art. Contemporary Hindu families will love the culturally specific details, while cultural outsiders will appreciate the universality of a bedtime routine." —Booklist

Book Narrative Traditions of a Telugu Epic Paln tiv rula Katha

Download or read book Narrative Traditions of a Telugu Epic Paln tiv rula Katha written by Aruna Bommareddi and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current climate of increasing absence of resistance from within traditions as that of Hinduism, this book offers a fresh read for those who look for resisting narratives that break free from the fold of larger narratives. The ‘little narrative’ here is an oral epic of the Telugu peoples that itself has spawned a flowing tradition of its own, with several other written texts, performances, plays and songs, and even movies based on it. However, what this book foregrounds is not the popularity of this Telugu oral epic tradition, but the problems involved when the oral tradition in all its variety of storytelling and performative renditions undergoes a cultural translation and appropriation by the dominant textual tradition. For instance, there have been attempts to bring all the different versions of the Palna?tivi?rula Katha under one textual rubric. This book, gently suggests that there must be a cultural politics at work behind such attempts and within the ambit of its five chapters and the attendant annexures, presents the oral epic narrative in all its multiplicities of story lines as also presentations. The larger effort here is to highlight the resistance offered by a people in terms of the creation and production of local narratives that have stood the test of time and, more importantly, the retrieval of the consciousness of a people by revisiting and foregrounding these creations. This book, as one turns its last page, certainly gets the reader in touch with a Telugu consciousness, for gaining a sense of which we need not search inside the books in a library but must restore to the people their oral stories and performances in all their varieties and contradictions.
