Book Telerehabilitation for People with Parkinson s Disease During the Covid 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Telerehabilitation for People with Parkinson s Disease During the Covid 19 Pandemic written by Trevor Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic changed how high-risk patients access medical care. Physical therapy is a critical component of Parkinson’s disease management, and many people with Parkinson’s disease (PwP) received telerehabilitation as an alternate form of service delivery in response to pandemic related restrictions.Method: The databases CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Google Scholar, Medline, and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Source were searched from October 2020 to February 2022. Articles with an outcome measure(s) recommended by the PD EDGE Task Force Highly Recommended Activity Outcome Measures (6 Minute Walk Test, 10 Meter Walk Test, Mini BESTest, MDS-UPDRS – Part 2, Functional Gait Assessment, 5 Times Sit to Stand, and 9 Hole Peg Test) were included. Additional inclusion criteria were PwP Hoehn and Yahr stage 1-3, remote supervision, peer-reviewed, Englishonly, and published in the past 10 years. Articles were excluded if subjects had comorbid neurological disease, atypical parkinsonism, or if the intervention lacked direct supervision. Articles meeting these requirements were selected for annotation and appraisal. Two researchers annotated and appraised each article, and the third researcher resolved disagreements. Results: Ninety articles were returned and screened for eligibility. After review and elimination of duplicates, eleven articles were reviewed for relevance to the patient case. Six articles were appraised, and two were included in the clinical decision-making process. These articles included one randomized control trial and one mixed method pilot study.Discussion/Conclusion: The literature reviewed does not support a clinical decision due to limitations in internal validity and few relevant articles available. An absence of functional decline may not be meaningful due to short study time frames. Telerehabilitation may improve accessibility of services for PwP and warrants further investigation.

Book Teleneurology in Practice

Download or read book Teleneurology in Practice written by Jack W. Tsao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title will provide an up-to-date review of the emerging practice of neurology telemedicine. Increasingly, neurology, like other disciplines of medicine, is implementing the technological advances and discoveries of the science of healthcare delivery to improve not only access and efficiency but outcomes and cost as well. For patients in remote and underserved areas, having a neurological condition means lengthy and costly travel to obtain specialist evaluation. Telemedicine has the ability to deliver such care to a patient’s local community. Neurology telemedicine for acute stroke has already demonstrated clinical efficacy and cost effectiveness by raising the numbers of thrombolysis-eligible patients who can be treated in a timely fashion. More than 85% of leading US neurology departments currently use or plan to implement telemedicine within the next year. The US military has a limited number of neurologists – a store-and-forward consultation system has enabled military neurologists to deliver far-forward battlefield care for service members deployed overseas. The chapters in this book will review the use of telemedicine for the evaluation and treatment of patients with many common neurological conditions and will provide a practical guide for neurologists seeking to incorporate telemedicine into their daily practices.
