Book excerpt: College students graduating now, probably never cranked a phone to get an operator to complete a call for them. Many may not have even heard of it. Many talk of dialing a telephone when they push buttons to make a telephone call, but don't know why its called dialing. Rotary dials that we use to dial to make a call have all but faded in to history. First ladies and losing nominees quickly fade in to a black hole. Telephone history, the people and the equipment is headed the same way. Books, not even history books, do not mention the great works of telephone men and women. Consequently, the history of telephony, its equipment and people are being forgotten. The purpose of this book is to create a history of these gallant people and their equipment. It is composed of short stories that describe the equipment and how unexpected predicaments affected their workday. Don worked over fifty years in telecommunications. Working with many telephone employees in both Bell System and the independent telephone industry. He enjoyed, not only the work, but also the fellowship he encountered through his association with the personnel in both groups. He found them all to be like one big family, which believed in good service to the telephone subscribers. With divesture, he took an early retirement from Ohio Bell. But, worked at other communication companies. During his employment, he told young engineers about the employees and equipment of the telephone system prior to Divesture. Occasionally, he would be told that he should write a book. He took it as a joke. When he was laid off from the last company, he decided to write a book so that the many conscientious telephone employees would not be forgotten.

So begins the story of a grandpa playfully recounting the well-known fairytale--or his version, at least--to his granddaughter. The end result is an unpredictable tale that comes alive as it's being told, born out of imaginative play and familial affection. This spirited picture book will surprise and delight from start to finish, while reminding readers that storytelling is not only a creative act of improvisation and interaction, but also a powerful pathway for connection and love. Telling Stories Wrong was written by Gianni Rodari, widely regarded as the father of modern Italian children's literature. It exemplifies his great respect for the intelligence of children and the kind of work he did as an educator, developing numerous games and exercises for children to engage and think beyond the status quo, imagining what happens after the end of a familiar story, or what possibilities open up when a new ingredient is introduced. This book is illustrated with great affection by the illustrious artist Beatrice Alemagna (Child of Glass), who counts Gianni Rodari as one of her "spiritual fathers."

But when he takes the advice of an Egyptian mystic and hires servants to chant his name over and over again, he seems to not only get better, but younger. Except then a terrorist group lays siege to his island villa, his team of bank managers has to be bussed in to help with the ransom negotiations, and a media spectacle breaks out . . . Richard C. Lindberg has dug deeply to reveal lost historical events and hidden gems from Chicago’s past. Spanning the Civil War through the 1960s, the volume showcases forgotten crimes, punishments, and consequences: poisoned soup that nearly killed three hundred leading citizens, politicians, and business and religious leaders; a woman in showbiz and her street-thug husband whose checkered lives inspired a 1955 James Cagney movie; and the first police woman in Chicago, hired as a result of the senseless killing of a young factory girl in a racially tinged case of the 1880s. Chapters on the history of early city landmarks spotlight the fight to save Lakefront Park and how “Lucky” Charlie Weeghman’s north side baseball park became Wrigley Field. Other chapters explore civic, cultural, and political happenings: the great Railroad Fairs of 1948 and 1949; Richard J. Daley’s revival of the St. Patrick’s Day parade; political disrupter Lar “America First” Daly; and the founding of the Special Olympics in Chicago by Anne Burke and others. Book Exploding the Phone

Download or read book Exploding the Phone written by Phil Lapsley and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A rollicking history of the telephone system and the hackers who exploited its flaws.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review Before smartphones, back even before the Internet and personal computers, a misfit group of technophiles, blind teenagers, hippies, and outlaws figured out how to hack the world’s largest machine: the telephone system. Starting with Alexander Graham Bell’s revolutionary “harmonic telegraph,” by the middle of the twentieth century the phone system had grown into something extraordinary, a web of cutting-edge switching machines and human operators that linked together millions of people like never before. But the network had a billion-dollar flaw, and once people discovered it, things would never be the same. Exploding the Phone tells this story in full for the first time. It traces the birth of long-distance communication and the telephone, the rise of AT&T’s monopoly, the creation of the sophisticated machines that made it all work, and the discovery of Ma Bell’s Achilles’ heel. Phil Lapsley expertly weaves together the clandestine underground of “phone phreaks” who turned the network into their electronic playground, the mobsters who exploited its flaws to avoid the feds, the explosion of telephone hacking in the counterculture, and the war between the phreaks, the phone company, and the FBI. The product of extensive original research, Exploding the Phone is a groundbreaking, captivating book that “does for the phone phreaks what Steven Levy’s Hackers did for computer pioneers” (Boing Boing). “An authoritative, jaunty and enjoyable account of their sometimes comical, sometimes impressive and sometimes disquieting misdeeds.” —The Wall Street Journal “Brilliantly researched.” —The Atlantic “A fantastically fun romp through the world of early phone hackers, who sought free long distance, and in the end helped launch the computer era.” —The Seattle Times

They must be encouraged to question, challenge, destroy, mock, eliminate, generate, and reproduce their own language and meanings through stories that will enable them to narrate their own lives." --Jack Zipes "I hope this small book," writes renowned children's author Gianni Rodari, "can be useful for all those people who believe it is necessary for the imagination to have a place in education; for all those who trust in the creativity of children; and for all those who know the liberating value of the word."
