Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The substitution of transportation by telecommunications has long been advocated as an approach that might eventually alleviate the demand placed on transportation facilities and thereby reduce fuel consumption and air pollutant emissions. With increasing penetration of telecommunications in individual homes and businesses, coupled with the widespread availability of computing equipment, facsimile capabilities and the like, there is renewed interest in exploring and encouraging telecommuting arrangements. These include work-at-home schemes and workplace decentralization with satellite work centers, as well as many other nontraditional approaches to structuring workplace activities and worker responsibilities. The aim of this project is to address the travel behavior implications of telecommuting, and determine the potential of telecommuting to improve urban mobility and reduce fuel consumption. The following objectives will be addressed: 1) prepare a synthesis of existing experience with telecommuting from the standpoint of travel behavior and fuel consumption; 2) characterize telecommunications-tripmaking-energy interactions at the individual and household levels, focusing on travel behavior within a dynamic activity-based framework; 3) develop a predictive approach to assess the energy consumption consequences of telecommmuting; and 4) develop recommendations for possible implementation strategies and for future travel and energy demand forecasting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It begins with the first formal case study, in 1973-74, of the idea of moving the work to the workers instead of moving the workers to work. The results are reviewed from several angles, including: management impacts; productivity; costs and benefits; energy conservation implications; and public policy issues.

Download or read book Transportation and Power Grid in Smart Cities written by Hussein T. Mouftah and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing worldwide trend in population migration into urban centers, we are beginning to see the emergence of the kinds of mega-cities which were once the stuff of science fiction. It is clear to most urban planners and developers that accommodating the needs of the tens of millions of inhabitants of those megalopolises in an orderly and uninterrupted manner will require the seamless integration of and real-time monitoring and response services for public utilities and transportation systems. Part speculative look into the future of the world’s urban centers, part technical blueprint, this visionary book helps lay the groundwork for the communication networks and services on which tomorrow’s “smart cities” will run. Written by a uniquely well-qualified author team, this book provides detailed insights into the technical requirements for the wireless sensor and actuator networks required to make smart cities a reality.

Book excerpt: This book examines the theoretical and methodological research issues that underlie the design and use of interactive technology. The analysis directs attention to three human capacities: cognition, communication and interaction. The examination of these capacities is embedded in understanding concepts of communication and interaction and their application; conceptions of knowledge and cognition; and the role of aesthetics and ethics in design.

Invasion of privacy, computer crime, control of information, information inequity, and unemployment due to automation continue to be studied as their existence is no longer a matter of speculation. The emphasis of this book is less on the consequences of information technology than on understanding the nature of information societies.
