Download or read book Extremely Deformable Structures written by Davide Bigoni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, a new research stimulus has derived from the observation that soft structures, such as biological systems, but also rubber and gel, may work in a post critical regime, where elastic elements are subject to extreme deformations, though still exhibiting excellent mechanical performances. This is the realm of ‘extreme mechanics’, to which this book is addressed. The possibility of exploiting highly deformable structures opens new and unexpected technological possibilities. In particular, the challenge is the design of deformable and bi-stable mechanisms which can reach superior mechanical performances and can have a strong impact on several high-tech applications, including stretchable electronics, nanotube serpentines, deployable structures for aerospace engineering, cable deployment in the ocean, but also sensors and flexible actuators and vibration absorbers. Readers are introduced to a variety of interrelated topics involving the mechanics of extremely deformable structures, with emphasis on bifurcation, instability and nonlinear behavior, both in the quasi-static and dynamic regimes. Essential and up-to-date theoretical, numerical and experimental methodologies are covered, as a tool to progress towards a satisfactory modeling of the nonlinear behavior of structures.

Download or read book Material Instabilities in Elastic and Plastic Solids written by Henryk Petryk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects recent theoretical developments in the area of material instability in elastic and plastic solids along with related analytical and numerical methods and applications. The existing different approaches to instability phenomena in metal single crystals, polycristals and in geomaterials are presented with the emphasis laid on mutual relations and on unifying concepts, including elliptictly loss and the energy criterion. Quasi-static bifurcation, initiation of single or multiple shear bands and post-critical strain localization are examined along with dynamic phenomena as wave propagation, moving shocks, internal snap-through and instability of flutter type. This gives an overview of a variety of material instability problems, methods and applications.

In following this objective, the volume presents a complete scientific background (profiting from the fact that the authors of the individual parts of the publication have personally been very active in the corresponding field of research for an extended period of time now), but also establishes recommendations, procedures and formulae for practical design. The significance of the volume may be seen in its challenging current concepts of stability analysis, encouraging progress in the field and thereby establishing an advanced basis for more reliable and economical design.

Download or read book Heterogeneous Media written by Konstantin Markov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-02-02 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most materials used in contemporary life and industry are heterogeneous (composites) and multicomponent, possessing a rich and complex internal structure. This internal structure, or microstructure, plays a key role in understanding and controlling the continuum behavior, or macroscopic, of a wide variety of materials. The modeling process is a critical tool for scientists and engineers studying the analysis and experimentation for the micromechanics and behavior of these materials. "Heterogeneous Media" is a critical, in-depth edited survey of the major topics surrounding the modeling and analysis of problems in micromechanics of multicomponent systems, including conceptual and practical aspects. The goal of this extensive and comprehensive survey is to provide both specialists and nonspecialists with an authoritative and interdisciplinary perspective of current ideas and methods used for modeling heterogeneous materials behavior and their applications. Topics and Features: * all chapters use interdisciplinary modeling perspective for investigating heterogeneous media*Five chapters provide self-contained discussions, with background provided*Focuses only upon most important techniques and models, fully exploring micro-macro interconnections*extensive introductory survey chapter on micromechanics of heterogeneous media*microstructure characterization via statistical correlation functions*micro-scale deformation of pore space*wave fields and effective dynamical properties*modeling of the complex production technologies for composite materials The book is ideal for a general scientific and engineering audience needing an in-depth view and guide to current ideas, methods and
Download or read book Acoustic Metamaterials written by Richard V. Craster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the book: This book is the first comprehensive review on acoustic metamaterials; novel materials which can manipulate sound waves in surprising ways, which include collimation, focusing, cloaking, sonic screening and extraordinary transmission. It covers both experimental and theoretical aspects of acoustic and elastic waves propagating in structured composites, with a focus on effective properties associated with negative refraction, lensing and cloaking. Most related books in the field address electromagnetic metamaterials and focus on numerical methods, and little (or no) experimental section. Each chapter will be authored by an acknowledged expert, amongst the topics covered will be experimental results on non-destructive imaging, cloaking by surface water waves, flexural waves in thin plates. Applications in medical ultrasound imaging and modeling of metamaterials will be emphasized too. The book can serve as a reference for researchers who wish to build a solid foundation of wave propagation in this class of novel materials.
Download or read book Mechanics of Solids and Fluids written by Franz Ziegler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unified presentation of the concepts and most of the practicable principles common to all branches of solid and fluid should be appealing to advanced undergraduate mechanics. Its design students in engineering science and should also enhance the insight of both graduate students and practitioners. A profound knowledge of applied mechanics as understood in this book may help to cultivate the versatility that the engineering community must possess in this modern world of high-technology. This book is, in fact, a reviewed and extensively improved second edition, but it can also be regarded as the first edition in English, translated by the author himself from the original German version, "Technische Mechanik der festen und flOssigen Korper," published by Springer-Verlag, Wien, in 1985. Although this book grew out of lecture notes for a three semester course for advanced undergraduate students taught by the author and several colleagues during the past 20 years, it contains sufficient material for a subsequent two-semester graduate course. The only prerequisites are basic algebra and analysis as usually taught in the first year of an undergraduate engineering curriculum. Advanced mathematics as it is required in the progress of mechanics teaching may be taught in parallel classes, but also an introduction into the art of design should be offered at that stage.
Download or read book Mathematical Methods And Models In Composites written by Vladislav Mantic and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a representative selection of the most relevant, innovative, and useful mathematical methods and models applied to the analysis and characterization of composites and their behaviour on micro-, meso-, and macroscale. It establishes the fundamentals for meaningful and accurate theoretical and computer modelling of these materials in the future. Although the book is primarily concerned with fibre-reinforced composites, which have ever-increasing applications in fields such as aerospace, many of the results presented can be applied to other kinds of composites. The topics covered include: scaling and homogenization procedures in composite structures, thin plate and wave solutions in anisotropic materials, laminated structures, instabilities, fracture and damage analysis of composites, and highly efficient methods for simulation of composites manufacturing. The results presented are useful in the design, fabrication, testing, and industrial applications of composite components and structures. The book is written by well-known experts in different areas of applied mathematics, physics, and composite engineering and is an essential source of reference for graduate and doctoral students, as well as researchers. It is also suitable for non-experts in composites who wish to have an overview of both the mathematical methods and models used in this area and the related open problems requiring further research.
