Book excerpt: To pray is to touch the face of Heaven.Prayer is a divine privilege extended to all humanity. We have been given the right to enter into the presence of the God of the Universe ¿ the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But when we approach an awesome God, what words do we bring as our offering? What praises and exultations do we offer? How do we approach Him with our deepest feelings and our most urgent needs? The Tefillot Tamid siddur is designed as a tool for those who are beginning their journey into Messianic Jewish prayer. We have specifically created this abbreviated, introductory siddur for those who desire to begin a life of prayer, but need a place to start. This siddur is designed to be used for Shacharit (morning) and Mincha (afternoon) prayers during weekdays. The Tefillot Tamid siddur is designed to help one become familiar with the core prayers of the set times of daily prayer. It is not only our duty, but also our privilege to enter daily into the Divine Presence. Through this constant interaction, our souls are tethered to the Holy One of Israel. Through these continual, daily appointments, our souls are fed and our spirits are revived. Just as a person would not consider going days without food, we should also consider it equally damaging to go days without prayer to nourish our souls. Our prayer for you is that your prayers ascend to the Throne of Heaven, and that you are transformed in the process.

Book The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer written by Macy Nulman and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1996-02-01 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years in the making, The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer is a monumental achievement. Never before has such a comprehensive resource been available to those searching for answers to questions on Jewish prayer. Macy Nulman has provided, in one unique, accessible volume, information on each and every prayer recited in the Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions, creating an invaluable tool for study or quick reference. Prayer books are essentially cumulative anthologies that evolved over time as new prayers were added. Study of these prayers reveals insights into the history of Judaism, providing a deeper appreciation of the heritage that has sustained the Jewish people throughout the centuries. This volume, through its encyclopedic format, makes such a study easy and enjoyable. Arranged alphabetically by prayer, the encyclopedia entries include extensive liturgical information on the prayers, their composers and development, the laws and customs surrounding them, and their place in the service. All prayers, including not only prayers recited in the synagogue, but also the Grace After Meals and the prayers to be said before going to bed, prayers for special occasions such as weddings and circumcisions, prayers for the funeral ritual and for private devotion, are featured. The entries make extensive use of cross-referencing and bibliographical information to facilitate further study. In addition, the author discusses the many poetic insertions, known as piyyutim, recited on special Sabbaths, Holy Days, and festivals. Concise and easy to consult, The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer contains several indexes: two title indexes - one in Hebrew and one in transliteration - as well as an index of biblical verses and a name index. Additionally, a glossary defining technical terms and vocabulary associated with the prayers is provided. This important, one-of-a-kind reference volume is ideal for scholars, students, and others who want to know more about Jewish tradition.

Book Wisdom Poured Out Like Water

Download or read book Wisdom Poured Out Like Water written by J. Harold Ellens and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents innovative research by scholars from across the globe in celebration of Gabriele Boccaccini’s sixtieth birthday and to honor his contribution to the study of early Judaism and Christianity. In harmony with Boccaccini’s determination to promote the study of Second Temple Judaism in its own right, this volume includes studies on various issues raised in early Jewish apocalyptic literature (e.g., 1 Enoch, 2 Baruch, 4 Ezra), the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other early Jewish texts, from Tobit to Ben Sira to Philo and beyond. The volume also provides several investigations on early Christianity in intimate conversation with its Jewish sources, consistent with Boccaccini’s efforts to transcend confessional and disciplinary divisions by situating the origins of Christianity firmly within Second Temple Judaism. Finally, the volume includes essays that look at Jewish-Christian relations in the centuries following the Second Temple period, a harvest of Boccaccini’s labor to rethink the relationship between Judaism and Christianity in light of their shared yet contested heritage.

Here are chapters on daily prayer; Sabbath prayer; prayer services for the holidays; the yearly cycle of synagogue Bible readings; the history and makeup of the synagogue; the different prayer rites for Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Yemenites, and other cultural/geographic groupings; the role of the rabbi and the cantor in the synagogue; and the role of music in the service.

Book Cursing the Christians

Download or read book Cursing the Christians written by Ruth Langer and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-01-12 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruth Langer offers an in-depth study of the birkat haminim, a Jewish prayer for the removal of those categories of human being who prevent the messianic redemption and the society envisioned for it. In its earliest form, the prayer cursed Christians, apostates to Christianity, sectarians, and enemies of Israel. Drawing on the shifting liturgical texts, polemics, and apologetics concerning the prayer, Langer traces the transformation of the birkat haminim from what functioned without question in the medieval world as a Jewish curse of Christians, through its early modern censorship by Christians, to its modern transformation within the Jewish world into a general petition that God remove evil from the world. Christian censorship played a crucial role in this transformation of the prayer; however, Langer argues that the truest transformation in meaning resulted from Jewish integration into Western culture. Eventually, the prayer shed its references to any specific category of human being and lost its function as a curse. Reconciliation between Jews and Christians today requires both communities to confront a long history of prejudice. Ruth Langer shows through the birkat haminim how the history of one liturgical text chronicled Jewish thinking about Christians over hundreds of years.

Book The Prayer Rites of Synagogal Worship and their Historical Development

Download or read book The Prayer Rites of Synagogal Worship and their Historical Development written by Leopold Zunz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given Leopold Zunz’s difficult German style and the tight conciseness of his presentation, it is hardly surprising that no English translation of his Die Ritus (1859) has been published. The Hebrew edition of 2016 does not aim to place this pioneering work in the context of Jewish liturgical history, sometimes opts for a paraphrase, rather than a literal translation, and does not always make it easy to distinguish Zunz from later scholarship. There are undoubtedly English-speaking scholars in current academia who are unacquainted with German and Modern Hebrew but would benefit from reading this classic study. This volume therefore links Die Ritus with Zunz’s other scholarly works by way of a brief introduction, provides a faithful translation, without the result reading more like German than English. It reproduces Zunz’s footnotes in his own highly abbreviated form but offers as an appendix to the introductory essay a bibliographical list that explains references that may not be obvious even to a learned reader. Readers of English will now be able to reach their own conclusions about the stature of Zunz, about his contributions to the study of Jewish liturgy, and, indeed, about any shortcomings that there may have been in his scholarly, theological and political tendencies.

Book excerpt: Portraits of Jewish Learning brings together colorful accounts of the ways that Jewish students today are having meaningful learning experiences in day school classrooms, Hebrew programs, synagogue-based schools, and high school and college courses that push students out of their comfort zone. Whether the students are second graders engaged in text analysis, sixth graders solving complex "mystery puzzles" about Jewish values, or teens encountering "counter-narratives" about Israel's history, these stories--informed by careful and disciplined inquiry--prompt readers to reflect on questions of what Jewish learning is, what we can discover by studying experiences of learning at close range and over time, and how Jewish education can respond to the needs and interests of Jewish learners who seek a Judaism that is relevant in today's world. The work of researchers and practitioners who are changing the landscape of contemporary Jewish education, these portraits are designed to encourage critical discussion among educational leaders, clergy, policymakers, philanthropists, and parents, as well as teachers and those aspiring to work in Jewish education. They invite us to think about the many ways that today's Jewish education can be enriched by experimentation and innovation.

This book aims to unlock the mystery of the various psalms which comprise the tefillah. The book begins with an introduction to prayer, Tehillim, and biblical poetry. Then, after an overview of the structure of the morning service, each chapter examines either a prayer adapted from a psalm or the entire psalm and explains the reason it was chosen as part of the liturgy. Let the words of my mouth praise God and all mankind will bless the holy name of God for eternity (Psalm 145:21).
