Book excerpt: A thrilling sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller Nick of Time, in which the young time traveler Nick McIver must prove his courage once more, on two fronts: in World War Two-era England, where Nazis have invaded his homeland, and in America during the Revolution, where Nick stands shoulder to shoulder with General George Washington It's 1940 and the Nazis are invading Nick's beloved home, the British Channel Islands. So Nick takes to the skies: He has discovered an old World War One fighter plane in an abandoned barn. Determined to learn to fly, he is soon risking life and limb to photograph armed German minelayers and patrol boats, and executing incredibly perilous bombing raids over Nazi airfields by night. Meanwhile, the evil pirate, Captain Billy Blood, still desperate to acquire Nick's time machine, returns to Greybeard Island. He kidnaps Nick's sister, Kate, and transports her back to Port Royal, Jamaica, in the year 1781, leaving Nick a message that if he wants to see her alive again, he must come to Jamaica and make an even swap: Kate's life in exchange for Nick's wondrous time machine--that's Blood's bargain. Having traveled back in time, Nick discovers a plot that might change the outcome of the American Revolution. Disguised as an eighteenth-century cabin boy, he travels to the Caribbean and confronts his old enemy, who has assembled the world's largest pirate armada. From the battlefields of the New World to the brutal German occupation of English soil in World War Two, Ted Bell's The Time Pirate has Nick McIver fighting once again to defend his country, the outcome of two wars resting on his young shoulders.

Book Get the Money

Download or read book Get the Money written by Ted Berrigan and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monumental event in American poetry, Get the Money! brings together the essential prose writings of iconic New York School poet Ted Berrigan. “Ted Berrigan was a leader of the New York School; his crazy energy embodied that movement and the city itself.”—John Ashbery, author of Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror “Get the Money!” was Ted Berrigan’s mantra for the paid writing gigs he took on in support of his career as a poet. This long-awaited collection of his essential prose draws upon the many essays, reviews, introductions, and other texts he produced for hire, as well as material from his journals, travelogues, and assorted, unclassifiable creative texts. Get the Money! documents Berrigan’s innovative poetics and techniques, as well as the creative milieu of poets—centered around New York’s Poetry Project—for whom he served as both nurturer and catalyst. Highlights include his journals from the ’60s, depicting his early poetic discoveries and bohemian activities in New York; the previously unpublished “Some Notes About ‘C,’” an account of his mimeo magazine that serves as a de facto memoir of the early days of the second-generation New York School; a moving and prescient obituary, “Frank O’Hara Dead at 40”; book “reviews” consisting of poems entirely collaged from lines in the book; art reviews of friends and collaborators like Joe Brainard, George Schneeman, and Jane Freilicher; and his notorious “Interviews” with John Cage and John Ashbery, both of which were completely fabricated. Get the Money! provides a view into the development of Berrigan’s aesthetics in real time, as he captures the heady excitement of the era and champions the poets and artists he loves. Praise for Get the Money!: "Get the Money! captures the esprit de corps of the particular community close to Ted’s door on St Mark’s Place. This book of prose with its nimble lift, tinged with intimacy, wit, and perception is a welcome addition to the second generation NY School canon."—Anne Waldman, author of Trickster Feminism "Ted was my mentor, my teacher of America and its poetry, and I often quote him. He was an oral genius and I have regretted not writing down everything he said to me. Now I have this collection of journals, critical writing on art, aphorisms, and correspondence. It makes for a grand portrait of the poet who charmed my whole generation. Ted Berrigan is alive in this book in ways that no one could guess."—Andrei Codrescu, author of Too Late for Nightmares "It’s always a significant occasion when we have an edition of a poets prose. Get the Money! offers us an important window into Ted Berrigan’s laboratory, his no bullshit attitude, his class awareness, his gorgeous sentimentality, and his disarming anarchic humor. This book is what anyone could hope it would be: funny, tender, brilliant, intimate, original, alive."—Peter Gizzi, author of Now It's Dark "Ted Berrigan's voice has always been instantly familiar to me so Get the Money! feels less like a reading experience and more like taking a long walk with my favorite poet, then buying him a drink someplace and letting him talk."—Cedar Sigo, author of All This Time

Book Sinatra

Download or read book Sinatra written by Ted Schwarz and published by Spi Books. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book every other Sinatra biographer wanted to write! Nick Sevano was a life-long friend of Sinatra's as well as his manager for -- 23 years. He was in a unique position to know everything that went on in Frank's life and reveals much never-before-told information in this stunning book. Nick was initially hired by his mother's close friend, Dolly Sinatra, to act as Frank's driver and Dolly's payoff man when she still had to bribe club owners to let Frank sing. Nick was present as Sinatra truly learned his art, as he raced through every beautiful woman who was willingly bedded, and as he handled the tough guys Frank liked to challenge but was too weak to fight. He promoted Flank's records, rigged music popularity polls in Frank's favour at Down Beat Magazine, worked on Frank's behalf with the club owners, and became intimate with the Mob bosses who were the real powers behind the leading night clubs and performance locations. All the major best-selling biographers have interviewed Nick, but he felt it was prudent (for his health) to say little about Sinatra that was not publicly known -- until now. Nick can now tell what really happened because most of the dangerous characters he dealt with over the years are either dead, in prison or near dead! And now that the threats are gone, many others are telling their stories to Nick's co-author, Ted Schwarz, and everything can be properly documented. The true story of Sinatra's life is at last becoming available. The authors reveal: The truth behind Sinatra's remarkable movie career, from the films where he sang songs that had nothing to do with the plot, to his great success in From Here to Eternity, to the myth of the Johnny Fontane role in The Godfather. Frank did it "his way" only when he stayed within the Mob's rules. When he got out of line in Las Vegas, Frank was the subject of a sit-down with Mafia Dons and Nick was present when Sinatra was told by mob enforcers to "shape-up or die". How Joe Kennedy, in the 1960 JFK Presidential campaign, used Sinatra, Sammy Davis, and other Sinatra contacts, and then suddenly refused to allow them to get near JFK fearing their Mob affiliations could disparage his son. The private stories of the businesses that Nick owned with Frank and that he witnessed as an insider: from a music publishing company, to restaurants, to the Cal-Neva Lodge where Marilyn Monroe failed in her first attempt at suicide. Plus the many never-before-told insider stories of: the scandals, the endless supply of women and the amazing triumphs.

Book Scientific impact indicators of teaching staff of Greek universities and higher educational institutions for 2017 according to Scopus

Download or read book Scientific impact indicators of teaching staff of Greek universities and higher educational institutions for 2017 according to Scopus written by Giorgos P. Kouropoulos and published by Giorgos Kouropoulos. This book was released on 2017-12-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scope: The classification of the permanent and non-permanent scientific and teaching staff of universities and applied universities – technological educational institutions which belong to the higher education sector in Greece. The classification take place in a single list and is based on the citation impact, bibliometric and other scientometric indicators according to Scopus database. Classification criteria: The first criterion for the classification is h-index indicator. In the case of equal h-index indicator between two or more professors, the following bibliometric indicators will be used for each paper author/professor: The number of total citations, the number of included papers in Scopus platform, the total impact factor, the number of citable papers/documents cd and finally the λc ratio. Information resource: Information related to the h-index indicator, number of citations, number of indexed articles and number of citable documents, are collected by the individual public profiles of professors in the Scopus platform. In addition, the calculation of total impact factor and λc ratio of each professor is carried out using the data of the Scopus platform. Methodology: The first step includes the search of the names of members of permanent and non permanent teaching staff for each faculty of all universities and higher educational institutions in Greece via their official web pages. The second step consists of two parts. The first part deals with search of the names of each member on the Scopus platform in Latin characters and the second part deals with identification and matching of each Scopus profile with the corresponding member of teaching staff for each faculty. In the third step follows the typing and transfer of numerical values, bibliometric indicators and other data from Scopus platform to the computer file and next the calculation of parameters cd and λc. During the fourth step, the classification process is carried out via Microsoft excel according to the above criteria. In the last fifth step, the real names of professors and authors are masked using a special function of the software, due to personal data purposes. Sampling data: The sampling period varied from 02/08/2017 to 06/12/2017, more analytically see Table 2. Totally, a sample consisting of 8715 members of teaching staff of higher educational institutions was collected according to the above step 1 through 3. Sampling error is equal to ± 1.07% in 95% confidence interval. Conclusions: There are 6144 members of permanent and non permanent teaching staff with h-index ≥ 5 and totally 8715 members of Greek universities and higher educational institutions with h-index ≥ 0. The average h-index for the sample of 6144 members is calculated to 14.8 ± 0.9% and the average number of citations for the same sample is calculated to 1221 ± 2.9%. The average h-index for the sample of 8715 professors is calculated to 11.1 ± 0.9% and the average number of citations for the same sample is calculated to 872 ± 2.9%.
