Book Eating the Underworld

Download or read book Eating the Underworld written by Doris Brett and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary personal journey through cancer and treatment. "...Extraordinary...Its bravery, irony, humour and intelligence - everything shines through the transparent prose...a remarkable literary voice, or melding of three voices--the autobiographical, the poetic, and the allegorical." - Dr. Oliver Sacks "The life of an individual is as complex as a maze of reflecting mirrors. The life of a family is even more so." Doris Brett is an award-winning writer and poet. 'I forget who said that the prospect of impending death concentrates the mind wonderfully . . . clarifying is the word I keep thinking of. But this is not the clarifying of a mist gently evaporating to reveal answers. This is the clarifying of paint-stripper; a solvent that stings and burns with its harshness, but reveals what was truly there all the time.' When Doris Brett was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, she began writing a private journal - a traveller's diary through a life-threatening illness. The journal, however, rapidly grew into something much more than that. Cancer became the catalyst for an inner journey - a journey through self. Evocatively told via three voices - the diarist, the poet, and the voice of fairytale and myth - this memoir explores the intricate dynamics of family, truth and memory. Poignant and compelling, Eating the Underworld is a sharply observed, often unexpectedly funny book about change, transformation and the constant renewal of self throughout our lives. 'As with any descent into a feared and terrifying country - whether it is the country of illness or the country of a grieving heart - we have entered the underworld. And we have eaten of its fruit . . . the knowledge of ourselves, the knowledge of others. We cannot remain unchanged.

Book German Shepherds Dog Books for Kids

Download or read book German Shepherds Dog Books for Kids written by K. Bennett and published by Mendon Cottage Books. This book was released on 2015-02-08 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German Shepherds - Dog Books for Kids Table of Contents Introduction Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Conclusion Author Bio Introduction "Money will buy a pretty good dog, but it won't buy the wag of his tail." ― Josh Billings German Shepherds are intelligent, versatile and faithful dogs. They have outstanding characteristics, and excel in almost anything they do. This breed is well known and among the 10 most popular breeds in the U.S. But, what makes them so popular? To begin with, their skills extend beyond the home. They are used in law enforcement, serving with police and even the military. They also help with special needs. For example: With those who are handicapped and require constant attention. However, their skills do not end there. Does the name Rin-Tin-Tin ring a bell? He was quite famous and appeared in many movies and shows. He was so popular he received hundreds of fan letters, sometimes thousands per week! And after the World Trade Center disaster, faithful German shepherd dogs risked their lives to comfort rescue workers and help find those who were missing. German shepherds are also excellent watchdogs. Their alert and often suspicious nature, can serve to protect both you and your family from strangers. However, this aspect of their personality may not appeal to you, if you are looking for a more guest friendly dog. This breed has a high energy level. Originally when this dog was first bred, it was for working purposes. The idea was to help herd flocks, get them into groups and so on. This all day task helped to shape a strong and high energy dog that requires a lot of activities to keep their attention. It is important to take note of this part of their personality. Why? Well, if they do not get the attention they need their boredom (even frustration) will shine through, with lots of barking and chewing. Depending on how loud it gets, it may drive you up the wall! Despite this aspect of their personality, there is no doubt German Shepherds are amazing dogs, and a wonderful asset to any home. And with proper training and loving attention, they will stand by you through thick and thin. Not a bad description to add to the list of… man’s best friend!
