Book Tectonics of Circum Pacific Continental Margins

Download or read book Tectonics of Circum Pacific Continental Margins written by Jean Aubouin and published by VSP. This book was released on 1990-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the structure and nature of movements within the Earth's crust has become increasingly important as we try to understand the history of the Earth and try to use this knowledge as a key to events in the future. This is especially relevant to those everincreasing communities populating the edges of the Pacific Ocean. This collection of papers deals with the tectonic modelling and evolution in some of the most seismically active regions in the world. Structural and stratigraphical analysis, together with geophysical, petrological and geochemical data give us some insight into tectonic events from the past and how they affected ancient landforms, and gives us a clearer understanding of earth movements and, therefore, allows us to predict catastrophic events such as earthquakes with greater accuracy.

Book The Evolution of the Pacific Ocean Margins

Download or read book The Evolution of the Pacific Ocean Margins written by Zvi Ben-Avraham and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by a group of internationally known experts, describes the evolution of the Pacific Ocean margins in terms of their interaction with oceanic plates. The work reflects changes in recent years in accepted views concerning the evolution of these margins. It is now thought that much of the crust of the margins may have grown through the gradual addition of discrete terranes of "foreign origin"--that is, of earth materials transported from other locations by tectonic processes. The margins discussed are those of western North America, Asia, Japan, Eastern China, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, and South America. Also reviewed are the general concepts of oceanic plateaus and transported terranes, and the past motion of the Pacific Ocean Plate.

Book Practical Handbook of Marine Science

Download or read book Practical Handbook of Marine Science written by Michael J. Kennish and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heavily-revised Practical Handbook of Marine Science, Fourth Edition continues its tradition as a state-of-the-art reference that updates the field of marine science to meet the interdisciplinary research needs of physical oceanographers, marine biologists, marine chemists, and marine geologists. This edition adds an entirely new section devoted to Climate Change and Climate Change Effects. It also adds new sections on Estuaries, Beaches, Barrier Islands, Shellfish, Macroalgae, Food Chains, Food Webs, Trophic Dynamics, System Productivity, Physical-Chemical-Biological Alteration, and Coastal Resource Management. The Handbook assembles an extensive international collection of marine science data throughout, with approximately 1,000 tables and illustrations. It provides comprehensive coverage of anthropogenic impacts in estuarine and marine ecosystems from local, regional, and global perspectives. Maintaining its user-friendly, multi-sectional format, this comprehensive resource will also be of value to undergraduate and graduate students, research scientists, administrators, and other professionals who deal with the management of marine resources. Now published in full color, the new edition offers extensive illustrative and tabular reference material covering all the major disciplines related to the sea.

Download or read book Defining the Pacific written by Fred Spier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume lays the physical and conceptual groundwork for the Pacific World series, exploring both the constraints imposed and the opportunities offered to humanity by the physical environment of the Pacific region. Organized from the perspectives of "Big History" and macro-geography, the volume presents a series of major studies and surveys by authors from a range of disciplines. It opens with perspectives on the ocean, and closes with questions of human settlement, diffusion, and trans-Pacific contacts. Geologists write of the origins of the Pacific, its geological structure, and the problem of tsunamis; climatologists and oceanographers discuss the El Niño Southern Oscillation and the ocean waters; biologists and biogeographers find patterns in the life of the Basin - as is shown, all these have their impact on the potential of the region for human use and settlement. Finally, geographers, anthropologists, and archaeologists deal with the peopling of the Pacific islands, the settlement of the Americas, and the incidence and importance of pre-modern links across the Pacific.
