Book The Cordilleran Miogeosyncline in North America

Download or read book The Cordilleran Miogeosyncline in North America written by Henry V. Lyatsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steep crustal-scale faults, having their origins in the Late Archean and Early Proterozoic and trending NE-SW, which define the fundamental block lithospheric structure of the North American craton, are seen from geological and geophysical evidence to continue far into the interior of the Late Proterozoic-Phanerozoic Canadian Cordilleran mobile megabelt. This suggests that variously reworked ex-cratonic basement blocks underlie much of the Cordillera. The western edge of the modern craton is probably near the Rocky Mountain-Omineca belt boundary; the Rocky Mountain fold-and-thrust belt on the east side of the Cordillera is evidently rootless and overlies the undisturbed cratonic basement. Phanerozoic differences between the Cordilleran tectonic belts, resulting from a long, dissimilar, multi-cycle history of waxing and waning orogenesis apparent from the rock record, lie chiefly in the degree of indigenous tectonic remobilization and reworking of the ancient crust.

Book Principles of Practical Tectonic Analysis of Cratonic Regions

Download or read book Principles of Practical Tectonic Analysis of Cratonic Regions written by Henry Lyatsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steep crystalline-basement faults, commonly indicated by potential-field anomalies, played a crucial role in evolution of continental cratonic platforms. In the Phanerozoic Western Canada Sedimentary Province, history of crustal block movements and warps is reconstructed from the distribution of depocenters, lithofacies and structures in structural-formational étages in sedimentary cover. Each étage is a rock succession formed during a particular tectonic stage; regional tectonic restructuring closes each stage, and the next stage represents a new tectonic regime. Practical tectonic analysis, based on observation of rocks and geophysical data, is a reliable guide for deciphering a region's geologic history and for resource exploration.

Book The Ancient Western North American Margin

Download or read book The Ancient Western North American Margin written by L. C. Struik and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work in the North American Cordillera emphasized the differencesbetween fault-bounded blocks of stratigraphy and as a consequence, theCordillera was subdivided into terranes. In east-central British Columbia, 5fault-bounded terranes are distinguished by their unique stratigraphy. Thispaper interprets the palinspastic geology of those terranes and how theycould come together, then showing that the terranes of east-centralCordillera were probably separated by highlands rather than oceans. Modifications to Trumpy's (1960) model for the Alps are discussed, thestratigraphy of the terranes summarized, and the Triassic palinspasticcross-section described. Finally the reconstruction of the Precambrian toPaleozoic western Canadian margin are discussed by relating the stratigraphyof the eastern Cordilleran terranes to the possible tectonic events thatcreated them.

Book The Tally Ho Shear Zone

Download or read book The Tally Ho Shear Zone written by Amy Tizzard and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tally Ho shear zone (THSZ) is a 40-kilometre long, northwest-striking assemblage of highly-deformed rocks outcropping along the western margin of Stikinia in southern Yukon. The location of the THSZ adjacent to the boundary between the oceanic Stikine Terrane and pericratonic Nisling Assemblage of the Yukon-Tanana Terrane provides an opportunity to examine the tectonic significance of a terrane-marginal high-strain structure. Detailed geological mapping along the THSZ and adjacent rocks indicates that the shear zone is a crustal-scale thrust fault that places deep-seated arc rocks of Stikinia up-section and to the east onto a package of upper crustal volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Upper Triassic Lewes River Group. Timing of movement along the THSZ is constrained by U-Pb zircon age determinations of a deformed section of cumulate leucogabbro in the hangingwall of the shear zone (208? 4.3 Ma) and by a post-kinematic cross-cutting megacrystic granite intrusion (~173 Ma). Positive?Nd values of Stikine magmatic rocks (+4.5 to +6.7) indicate magmas forming the oceanic terrane were formed with little to no input of continental crust until around the time of intrusion of a megacrystic granite unit in the mid-Jurassic (?Nd -4.0). The THSZ is therefore interpreted to have formed in response to the thick-skinned collision and underpinning of the Nisling Assemblage beneath western Stikinia in the Early Jurassic resulting in the imbrication of the Stikine magmatic arc along the THSZ.

Book Provenance and Paleotectonic Setting of North American Triassic Strata in Yukon

Download or read book Provenance and Paleotectonic Setting of North American Triassic Strata in Yukon written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detrital mineral geochronology, trace element and Nd isotope geochemistry, and field studies provide constraints for the source and paleotectonic setting of Late Devonian to Late Triassic North American strata in the northern Cordillera. Late Devonian-Early Mississippian clastic wedge deposits in northern Yukon and Northwest Territories record the influx of northerly derived sediment from the Innuitian orogenic belt. Isotopic data suggest that Innuitian clastic material was consistently recycled into post-Late Devonian Cordilleran margin strata. Early to Late Triassic sedimentation in Yukon was related to Late Permian-Early Triassic collision of the pericratonic Yukon-Tanana terrane (YTT) with western North America. Permo-Triassic closure of a marginal back-arc basin, whose remnants comprise the Slide Mountain terrane (SMT), juxtaposed YTT against the ancestral North American margin. The age and nature of this collision is analogous to that of the Sonoman orogeny in the southwestern United States and argues for accretionary tectonism along much of the Cordilleran margin during final construction of the Pangean supercontinent. Three stages of basin evolution following Late Permian-Early Triassic tectonism are now recognized in the northern Cordillera: (1) Early to Middle Triassic SMT-YTT overlap assemblage- Early to Middle Triassic coarse sandstone and conglomerate underlain by SMT in southeastern Yukon have detrital mineral ages which suggest that these strata represent westerly derived, first-cycle deposits shed from YTT following collision. (2) Early to Middle Triassic peripheral foreland basin - Ladinian (Middle Triassic) strata in southeastern Yukon contain detrital mineral ages which document the first known occurrences of sediment derived from allochthonous terranes to the west deposited on North America. These data call for pre-Ladinian peripheral foreland basin development along the former Cordilleran margin. This depocentre is now largely buried un.
