Book Tec h tonic Shifts Taxing the Digital Economy

Download or read book Tec h tonic Shifts Taxing the Digital Economy written by Aqib Aslam and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing digitalization of businesses has accelerated the need to address the many shortcomings and unresolved issues within the international corporate income tax system. In particular, the customer or “user”—through their online activities—is now considered by many as being a critical driving force behind the value of digital services. Furthermore, the rapid growth of digital service providers over the last decade has made them an increasingly popular target for special taxes—similar to wealth and solidarity taxes—which can also help mobilize much-needed revenues in the wake of a crisis. This paper argues that a plausible conceptual case can be made to tax the value generated by users under the corporate income tax. However, a number of issues need to be tackled for user-based tax measures to become a reality, which include agreement among countries on whether user value justifies a reallocation of taxing rights, establishing the legal right to tax income derived from user value, as well as an appropriate metric for valuing user-generated data if it is ever to be used as a tax base. Furthermore, attempting to tax only certain types of business is ill-advised, especially as user data is now being exploited widely enough for it to be recognized as an input for almost all businesses. Several options present themselves for consideration—from a modified permanent establishment definition combined with taxation by formulary apportionment, to user-based royalty-type taxes—each with their own merits and misdemeanors.

That's the only thing which makes this novel. The shlocking revelations contain herein will leave you pissed-o̶n̶ off without even the courtesy of calling it r̶a̶i̶n̶ ̶rage. In a satirical take on a lampoon, this travesty of a take-off, which morphs into persiflage of parody sees the sad descent of this t̶r̶i̶p̶e̶ writer into a r̶e̶d̶h̶e̶a̶d̶ hereditary i̶n̶s̶a̶n̶i̶t̶a̶r̶y̶ insanity that makes even Charles Lutwidge dodgy. Who is Baker Street, and why is he known as London's foremost d̶e̶f̶e̶c̶t̶i̶v̶e̶ detective when there's only one of him? Will he ever meet up with his chronic clerk, Brian P Water? Can Sylvie Nuance supply Water to quench his k̶n̶e̶e̶s̶ needs? Can Molly Qules find her father before he tries some How's Your Father with her too? Will Baker Street ever make his way to his flat in Sherlock Homes? And what does any of this have to do with Double Hedda Gabbler, The Three Musky Tears, and Sir Lame Spitting's renowned secret agent, Gyamnes Bombed? None of these questions will be answered here. Move on. These are not the dirges you're looking for.

Book Aspects of the Orange Revolution V

Download or read book Aspects of the Orange Revolution V written by Ingmar Bredies and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports by international governmental and non-governmental organizations on the 2004 presidential elections in Ukraine constituted a significant factor in generating, facilitating, and completing the Orange Revolution. Ukrainian civil society, mass media, courts, and political parties were the main driving force behind the popular uprising that returned Ukraine to the path of democratization it had embarked on in 1991. Yet, the unambiguous stance and political weight of such institutions as the EU, PACE, NATO, and, above all, OSCE played their role too. The democratic movement benefited from the menace of international isolation and stigmatization of the Ukrainian state, which was expected in case President Leonid Kuchma had decided to prevent a repetition of the second round of the voting. The volume collects not all, but some of the most widely discussed reports, including English translations of selected sections of the three reports produced by the CIS International Observers Mission. The latter as well as a report by an Israeli institute depart from the assessments of the other organizations represented here, allowing for comparison of diverging evaluations of the same events. The volume assembles full or excerpted official reports of the International Republican Institute, the Tel Aviv Institute for the Countries of Eastern Europe and CIS, the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Contributions by Yevgen Shapoval and Roman Kupchinsky introduce and conclude the collection.
