Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The first book which brings together and interprets both the theoretical concepts associated with the study of networks in the business world, and the policy applications being applied to the practical building and development of such networks. It maps the changes in the culture of economic development policy that occurred in the UK during the 1990s, incorporating a detailed assessment of the contribution that the Training and Enterprise Councils made to business support policies. Book Education Training and the Future of Work II

Download or read book Education Training and the Future of Work II written by Mike Flude and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the recent changes in education and training policy, mainly in the UK. The considerable developments of past years and the ways in which they have affected both education and training are examined. The contributors analyse the methods by which we educate our workforce, and look closely at the kind of training now offered to those in work. The chapters in this reader cover: * the role of the state * how economic factors influence education * national education and training policy * the political factor. Other countries including Germany are looked at, and there is reflection on the ways in which the 'new' industry led qualifications such as NVQs have fared. There is careful analysis as to how much the political climate of the time influenced developments. There is thorough research to back up claims made throughout the book, and many practical examples are referred to. What emerges is an incisive examination of current trends in education and the workplace.

Book Adult Learners Education and Training

Download or read book Adult Learners Education and Training written by Richard Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, economic and demographic changes have brought into question the adequacy of initial education programmes for continuous employment. While the primary focus of debate has been on creating structures of continuous education and training linked to the economic needs of Britain, arguments and movements for wider access to all forms of learning have continued to be made. Drawing on the experience of other European countries as well as Britain, this book addresses the three major themes of the ongoing debates: who participates in what forms of education and training and how can access be widened and increased: the relationship between economic development, education and training; the education and training developed by social movements, and the changes sought in the formal sector of provision.

Book A Little Piece of England My Adventures as Chief Executive of The Falkland Islands

This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late February 1994, Andrew Gurr was persuing the appointments pages of the Sunday Times when an advert caught his eye: 'Wanted: Chief Executive of the Falkland Islands Government'. Intrigued, he decided to follow it up... Nobody was more surprised than Andrew when, a few months later, he was offered the position. There followed five remarkable years running one of the smallest governments in the world and acting as Governor for nearly a year of that time. A more curious and multi-facted job would be hard to find. Nineteen years after the war and 8,000 miles from the mother country, are these intensely patriotic islands, or merely an anachronism and an embarrassment? What is it really like to live and work there? The answers are revealed in this book, where Andre shows his understanding of the people, the heritage, the wildlife and the landscape of this breathtakingly beautiful part of the world. This book is at times moving, at times humourous, and always captivating. It is a remarkable memoir of an opportunity that only comes to a selected few.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trading relationship between the United States and China, though now robust, was a recent and hardly inevitable development. Political animosity stemming from the Korean War and America's subsequent strategic embargo of China broke off economic and cultural ties. Following two decades of China's international isolation, as the United States sought to realign the geopolitical order in the 1970s, Washington began to engineer a restoration of its relationship with China. Diplomatic historians have carefully documented the formal and governmental intrigues of Nixon, Kissinger, Mao, and Zhou Enlai. As this book shows, a vigorous reconstruction of bilateral ties was unfolding simultaneously at the level of informal diplomacy, especially in the realm of US-China trade. Central to understanding the renewal of bilateral commerce is the National Council for United States-China Trade, an organization that, although nongovernmental, was established in 1973 with Washington's encouragement and oversight. The Council organized major American corporations not only to engage in commercial exchanges with China, but also to function as a diplomatic backchannel between Washington and Beijing before the two nations restored formal relations in 1979. Using the Council to historicize the entangling of the American and Chinese economies, Forgotten Vanguard not only reveals globalization's contingent path but also exposes the hidden importance of informal trade diplomacy in building the modern US-China relationship. This book will appeal to those with an interest in Cold War history, international relations, and the history of American diplomacy, with particular emphases on informal diplomacy and the modern history of the US-China economic relationship.
