La struttura del libro rispecchia tale approccio sperimentale, a partire dall’esplorazione di alcuni temi e metodi preliminari, esaminati nella sezione “Saggi”; proseguendo attraverso lo strumento del “mapping” e dell’interazione con l’ambiente e con le persone che abitano i luoghi; giungendo, infine, alla messa a sistema e ad una “sintesi” delle informazioni e delle indagini effettuate attraverso le proposte progettuali, descritte nella sezione “Progetti”. Ciascun tema progettuale prevede un approfondimento teorico, attraverso un saggio introduttivo, e svariate declinazioni progettuali che provano in maniera alternativa a fornire possibili scenari per la città. Per provare a risolvere le criticità esistenti, ma anche per valorizzare le potenzialità e i vari patrimoni del territorio di Frattaminore, le proposte progettuali sono state costruite attraverso un meccanismo di innesto nell’esistente, non orientato alla definizione di una forma compiuta e di una funzione predeterminata, ma che, al contrario, ha consentito di lavorare su un’idea di forma aperta, che ha riutilizzato quanto esiste, che ha incluso molteplici possibilità di uso e che ha cambiato continuamente la propria perimetrazione, estendendosi e inglobando pezzi urbani di diversa natura. Scenari di nuovi possibili significati e nuove trasformazioni urbane sono, dunque, il risultato di questo lavoro, composto da diversi livelli di approfondimento legati all’idea generale di Frattaminore come città in transizione./[English]: The design work carried out on the city of Frattaminore represented, for the students in the last year of the Master’s Program in Architecture 5UE, an important experiment, from a design and professional point of view, towards the development of an approach aimed at finding an adequate and factual response to the multiple needs posed by the reality of the context in which it operates. The book collects the results of the work carried out during the 2020-2021 academic year, highlighting the multiplicity of aspects and design topics addressed, as well as the variety of the proposed solutions. The structure of the book reflects this experimental approach, starting with the exploration of some preliminary topics and methods, examined in the “Essays” section; continuing through the tool of the “mapping” and the interaction with the environment and with the people who live the places; finally, working on assembling and defining a “synthesis” of data and investigations through the design proposals, described in the “Projects” section. Each project theme includes a theoretical study through an introductory essay, and several design variations to provide, in an alternative way, possible scenarios for the city. To try to solve the existing critical issues, yet to enhance the potential and the various heritage of the city of Frattaminore, the project proposals were built grafting into the existing, not oriented towards the definition of a closed form and a predetermined function. On the contrary, it has implied to work on the idea of an open form, which reuses what already exists, including multiple possibilities of use and continuously changing its perimeter, extending and incorporating urban pieces of different nature. Scenarios of new possible meanings and new urban transformations are, therefore, the result of this work, made up of different levels of study and research related to the general idea of Frattaminore as a city in transition.

Per risolvere le criticità esistenti, ma anche per valorizzare le potenzialità e i diversi patrimoni del territorio di Acerra, le proposte progettuali sono state costruite attraverso un meccanismo di innesto e connessioni nell’esistente, non orientato alla definizione di una forma compiuta e di una funzione predeterminata, ma che, al contrario, ha consentito di lavorare su un’idea di forma aperta, che ha riutilizzato quanto esiste, che ha incluso molteplici possibilità di uso e che ha cambiato continuamente la propria perimetrazione, estendendosi e inglobando pezzi urbani di diversa natura. Scenari di nuovi possibili significati e nuove trasformazioni urbane sono, dunque, il risultato di questo lavoro, composto da diversi livelli di approfondimento legati all’idea generale di Acerra come città di spazi dell’apprendimento diffusi.

Innovation processes such as co-design and co-creation help establish collaborations that engage with stakeholders in a trustworthy and transparent environment while answering the need for new value propositions. The importance of an integrated, holistic approach is widely recognized to break down silos in local government, in particular, when aimed at achieving a better integration of climate-energy planning. Despite the ongoing urbanization and polarization processes, new synergies between urban and rural areas emerge, linking development opportunities to intrinsic cultural, natural and man-made landscape values. The increasing availability of big, real-time urban data and advanced ICT facilitates frequent assessment and continuous monitoring of performances, while allowing fine-tuning as needed. This is valid not only for individual projects but also on a wider scale. In addition, and circling back to the first point, (big) urban data and ICT can be of enormous help in facilitating engagement and co-creation by raising awareness and by providing insight into the local consequences of specific plans. However, this potential is not yet fully exploited in standard processes and procedures, which can therefore lack the agility and flexibility to keep up with the pulse of the city and dynamics of society. The book provides a multi-disciplinary outlook based on experience to orient the reader in the giant galaxy of smart and sustainable planning, support the transposition of research into practice, scale up visionary approaches and design groundbreaking planning policies and tools.

In response, Italy established a radiation surveillance program to monitor the impact of the base on the environment and public health. In the first systematic study of nuclear expertise in Italy, Davide Orsini focuses on the ensuing technopolitical disputes concerning the role and safety of US nuclear submarines in the Mediterranean Sea from the Cold War period to the closure of the naval base in 2008. His book follows the struggles of different groups—including local residents of the archipelago, US Navy personnel, local administrators, Italian experts, and politicians—to define nuclear submarines as either imperceptible threats, much like radiocontamination, or efficient machines at the service of liberty and freedom. Unlike inland nuclear power plants, vividly present and visible with their tall cooling towers and reactor containers, the mobility and invisibility of submarines contributed to an ambivalence about their nature, perpetuating the idea of nuclear exceptionalism. In Italy, they symbolized objects in constant motion, easily removable at the first sign of potential harm. Orsini demonstrates how these mobile sources of hazard posed special challenges for both expert assessments and public understandings of risk, and in contexts outside the Anglo-Saxon world, where unique social power dynamics held sway over the outcome of technopolitical controversies.

Book excerpt: The idea of the book “Science and Conservation for Museum Collections” was born as a result of the experience made by CNR-ISTEC (Faenza) in the implementation of a course for Syrian restorers at the National Museum in Damascus. The book takes into consideration archaeological artefacts made out of the most common materials, like stones (both natural and artificial), mosaics, ceramics, glass, metals, wood and textiles, together with less diffuse artefacts and materials, like clay tablets, goldsmith artefacts, icons, leather and skin objects, bones and ivory, coral and mother of pearl. Each type of material is treated from four different points of view: composition and processing technology; alteration and degradation causes and mechanisms; procedures for conservative intervention; case studies and/or examples of conservation and restoration. Due to the high number of materials and to the great difference between their conservation problems, all the subjects are treated in a schematic, but precise and complete way. The book is mainly addressed to students, young restorers, conservators and conservation scientists all around the world. But the book can be usefully read by expert professionals too, because nobody can know everything and the experts often need to learn something of the materials not included in their specific knowledge. Twenty- two experts in very different fields of activity contributed with their experience for obtaining a good product. This term was used for the first time in 1935, but the attention of scientists to the biological component of the atmosphere goes back to 1769, when the Italian biologist Spallanzani carried out a series of experiments that disproved the concept of spontaneous generation of life and proved the presence of viable microorganisms in the air. Aerobiology has marked characteristics of interdisciplinarity: its application fields range from respiratory diseases to the airborne outbreak of animal and vegetal diseases and to the biodegradation of substances and materials. The latter is the subject of this book. The purpose of aerobiological research applied to the conservation of cultural heritage is to evaluate the risk of alteration by airborne microorganisms of materials forming artefacts of historical, artistic and archaeological interest. Airborne spores and vegetative structures may develop on different substrates and may be a cause of degradation, in relation to the types of materials, the microclimatic situation and the pollution of the conservation environments. The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the biological component of air, performed by means of targeted analysis campaigns, and of the characteristics of materials and environments, supplies indispensable information for the evaluation of the actual risk and the planning of interventions. This book is divided into four main parts.
