Book Technology s Impact on Fraction Learning

Download or read book Technology s Impact on Fraction Learning written by Maria Mendiburo and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractions are among the most difficult mathematical concepts for elementary school students to master (Behr, Harel, Post, & Lesh, 1992; Bezuk & Cramer, 1989; Moss & Case, 1999). Research indicates that manipulatives (e.g. fractions circles, fractions strips) positively impact students' conceptual and procedural understanding of fractions without impeding their ability to complete algorithmic procedures involving fractions (Cramer & Henry, 2002). Unfortunately, a variety of practical and pedagogical challenges associated with using manipulatives during instruction make it difficult for teachers to implement them effectively in classrooms. As a result, students receive far less exposure to manipulatives than the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) recommends for students in grades K-8 (Char, 1991; Hatfield, 1994; Hodge & Brumbaugh, 2003; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). This study examines the following research questions: (1) Are there differences in students' knowledge of fraction magnitude when they are taught basic fraction concepts using virtual manipulatives compared to when they are taught basic fraction concepts using physical manipulatives?; and (2) Are students able to complete more practice exercises and/or more games using virtual manipulatives than physical manipulatives? The results of the post-assessment data collected in this study support Clements' (1999, 1996) hypothesis that computers can provide students with virtual representations of mathematical concepts that are just as meaningful as physical manipulatives. The results of the analyses of the data collected in the practice logs overall (i.e. across both weeks of the intervention) and during the second week of the intervention provide quantitative evidence that virtual manipulatives are more time-efficient than physical manipulatives. It appears that gender is not a strong predictor of the outcomes associated with manipulative-based instruction. (Contains 1 table.).

Book International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Mathematics with Virtual Manipulatives

Download or read book International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Mathematics with Virtual Manipulatives written by Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores terminology, frameworks, and research being conducted worldwide on virtual manipulatives. It brings together international authors who provide their perspectives on virtual manipulatives in research and teaching. By defining terminology, explaining conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and reporting research, the authors provide a comprehensive foundation on the study and use of virtual manipulatives for mathematics teaching and learning. This foundation provides a common way for researchers to communicate about virtual manipulatives and build on the major works that have been conducted on this topic. By discussing these big ideas, the book advances knowledge for future research on virtual manipulatives as these dynamic tools move from computer platforms to hand-held, touch-screen, and augmented platforms.

Book Handbook of Research on Integrating ICTs in STEAM Education

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Integrating ICTs in STEAM Education written by Xefteris, Stefanos and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern society gives great importance to scientific and technological literacy, development of “21st century skills,” and creating individuals who are not passive users of ICT tools but active thinkers and even tinkerers. The learning process is thus constantly evolving to facilitate the acquisition of such skills, such as setting goals and making evidence-based decisions, thinking critically, and solving problems while efficiently managing time as well as using technology, cooperating ethically, and communicating effectively. STEAM is the approach to learning that uses concepts from natural sciences, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to foster critical thinking, computational and design thinking, as well working effectively together, mimicking the process followed by scientists. The end goal is engaged and motivated students who participate in experiential and inquiry-based learning in fun, immersive environments that facilitate learning through a creative process. The Handbook of Research on Integrating ICTs in STEAM Education includes current research focusing on the development of STEAM and ICT educational practices, tools, workflows, and frames of operation that encourage science skills, but also skills related to the arts and humanities such as creativity, imagination, and reflection on ethical implications. Covering topics such as early childhood education, machine learning education, educational robotics, and web-based simulations, this major reference work is an essential resource for engineers, educators of both K-12 and higher education, education administration, libraries, pre-service teachers, computer scientists, researchers, and academics.

Book Perceptual Learning and the Technology of Expertise

Download or read book Perceptual Learning and the Technology of Expertise written by Philip J. Kellman and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning in educational settings most often emphasizes declarative and procedural knowledge. Studies of expertise, however, point to other, equally important components of learning, especially improvements produced by experience in the extraction of information: "Perceptual learning." Here we describe research that combines principles of perceptual learning with computer technology to address persistent difficulties in mathematics learning. We report three experiments in which we developed and tested "perceptual learning modules" (PLMs) to address issues of structure extraction and fluency in relation to algebra and fractions. PLMs focus students' learning on recognizing and discriminating, or mapping key structures across different representations or transformations. Results showed significant and persisting learning gains for students using PLMs. PLM technology offers promise for addressing neglected components of learning: Pattern recognition, structural intuition, and fluency. Using PLMs as a complement to other modes of instruction may allow students to overcome chronic problems in learning.

They are the most severe and chronic form of learning difficulty in children. They can be present at birth or acquired as a result of illness, exposure to toxins, poor nutrition, medical treatment, sociocultural deprivation, or injury. Learning problems typically consist in failure to acquire reading, writing, or math skills, which are traditionally considered core domains. This book explores the epidemiology, neurobiological bases, and diagnostic tools necessary for a comprehensive assessment of children with learning disabilities. It also presents examples of children with specific learning disabilities and explains possible intervention strategies.

Book CALL for widening participation short papers from EUROCALL 2020

Download or read book CALL for widening participation short papers from EUROCALL 2020 written by Karen-Margrete Frederiksen and published by Research-publishing.net. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the EUROCALL society succeeded in holding the 28th EUROCALL conference, EUROCALL2020, on 20-21 August as an online, two-day gathering. The transition process required to make this happen was demanding and insightful for everyone involved, and, in many ways, a logical consequence of the core content and purpose of EUROCALL. Who would be better suited to transform an onsite conference into an online event than EUROCALL? CALL for widening participation was this year’s theme. We welcomed contributions from both theoretical and practical perspectives in relation to the many forms and contexts of CALL. We particularly welcomed longitudinal studies or studies that revisited earlier studies. The academic committee accepted 300 abstracts for paper presentations, symposia, workshops, and posters under this theme; 57 short papers are published in this volume. We hope you will enjoy reading this volume, the first one to reflect a one hundred percent online EUROCALL conference/Online Gathering.
