Book Technology Acceptance in Education

Download or read book Technology Acceptance in Education written by Timothy Teo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-26 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology acceptance can be defined as a user’s willingness to employ technology for the tasks it is designed to support. Over the years, acceptance researchers have become more interested in understanding the factors influencing the adoption of technologies in various settings. From the literature, much research has been done to understand technology acceptance in the business contexts. This is understandable, given the close relationship between the appropriate uses of technology and profit margin. In most of the acceptance studies, researchers have sought to identify and understand the forces that shape users’ acceptance so as to influence the design and implementation process in ways to avoid or minimize resistance or rejection when users interact with technology. Traditionally, it has been observed that developers and procurers of technological resources could rely on authority to ensure that technology was used, which is true in many industrial and organizational contexts. However, with the increasing demands for educational applications of information technology and changing working practices, there is s need to re-examine user acceptance issues as they emerge within and outside of the contexts in which technology was implemented. This is true in the education milieu where teachers exercise the autonomy to decide on what and how technology will be used for teaching and learning purposes. Although they are guided by national and local policies to use technology in the classrooms, teachers spent much of their planning time to consider how technology could be harnessed for effective lesson delivery and assessment to be conducted. These circumstances have provided the impetus for researchers to study technology acceptance in educational settings. Although these studies have typically involved students and teachers as participants, their findings have far-reaching implications for school leaders, policy makers, and other stakeholders. The book is a critical and specialized source that describes recent research on technology acceptance in education represented by educators and researchers from around the world such as Australia, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom, and United States of America.

Book Factors Affecting Faculty Technology Adoption of Online Teaching in Higher Education

Download or read book Factors Affecting Faculty Technology Adoption of Online Teaching in Higher Education written by Yonghan Zhou and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Online teaching and learning has grown rapidly in current educational contexts. Whereas once, the role of faculty was primarily a classroom instructor, in online classrooms, the role has been expanded to one of facilitator, organizer, and supporter. The more efficiently that faculty can adopt online technology and apply it to their teaching and instruction, the better students academic results will achieve (Goktalay & Huguet, 2006). The purpose of this literature review is to help faculty members to adopt new online technologies more effectively and successfully. This literature review identifies important factors that contribute to faculty members' adoption of technology in higher education. Among these factors are: reliability of online technology, faculty's perceived usefulness of technology, institutional support of online technology, time constraints in implementing online technology to instructional methods and developing effective goals for the use of technology, and then provides recommendations based on these affecting factors.

Book Determinants of Student Information Technology Adoption

Download or read book Determinants of Student Information Technology Adoption written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovating service delivery in higher education is central to supporting institutional and societal goals of increasing the numbers of college graduates and for transforming higher education institutions to center on the needs of today's students. Within this context, technology plays a critical role. This research seeks to contribute to institutional, academic and educational technology sector efforts to dramatically enhance service quality, in support of improving undergraduate student outcomes (student success), by identifying the determinants of student information technology adoption and removing barriers to accessing higher education. Using a mixed-methods and empirical approach based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), after an extensive literature review, individual interviews and focus groups, a web-based survey was administered to undergraduate students at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon to learn about their experiences with myPSU. myPSU is a web-based digital services platform (available as a native mobile application and website) that aids students in accessing services and resources critical to maintaining their enrollment. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), including Principal Components Analysis (PCA), was used to analyze 1,841 valid survey responses and derive statistical results. The findings suggest that effort expectancy and social influence stand out as critical influences on behavioral intention to adopt myPSU, and new to UTAUT, that social influence and a students' basic technology skills are significant determinants of effort expectancy. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of the UTAUT technology adoption model by suggesting the need, at least in a higher education context, of including skills as an important factor, as well as supporting the idea that more complex relationships exist between latent variables than a strict application of the UTAUT model affords. Also, PCA was leveraged to simplify the research model and its use raised questions about what role performance expectancy (perceived usefulness) might play in student information technology adoption. In sum, this research uniquely contributes to the research literature. It applies UTAUT to a higher education context to study the delivery of technology-enabled services and in doing so it makes contributions towards explaining the critical determinants of the adoption of software for accessing university services (one type of student information technology), related to how UTAUT could be applied in the university setting and how the model could be enhanced.

Book In Defense of American Higher Education

Download or read book In Defense of American Higher Education written by Philip G. Altbach and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-04-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current era in higher education is characterized by increased need for accountability and fiscal constraint coupled with demands for increased productivity. Higher education is expected to meet the demand of changing student demographics, as well as requests for research and service from government and industry. To preserve the academy's ability to meet these demands, the editors and contributors to this volume argue that, while change is inevitable and desirable, any radical alterations to the practices that have established and upheld the excellence of higher education in the United States must be carefully considered. The editors and contributors cherish the best ideals of higher education: academic freedom, commitment to both inquiry and teaching, and preservation of an independence of mind and spirit in the face of external pressures. At the same time, the authors of these essays also reflect upon the failings of higher education, including problematic historical legacies such as racism, sexism, and anti-semitism. In Defense of American Higher Education is a careful analysis of what we have inherited, undertaken with a critical eye for constructive reform. It will be of interest to anyone concerned about the future of American higher education.
