Book Information and Communications Technologies in Society

Download or read book Information and Communications Technologies in Society written by Ben Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing body of work examining the ‘consequences’, or more accurately the inter-relationships between information and communications technologies (ICTs) and society at the microsocial (individual, household) level. The vast majority of this work has so far been focused on the US and the subsequent publications have consequently provided predominantly US-centred analyses. This book will re-dress this balance by providing analyses of the situation in Europe and is associated states and placing the analyses in the context of both European and International research and policy debates. The book uses data from a range of European countries as well as comparisons with Asia and the USA. Students and academics from a range of disciplines including sociology, business and management and new media will find this book to be a valuable addition to their reading lists.

Book New Communication Technologies

Download or read book New Communication Technologies written by Josiane Jouët and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 1991 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a synoptic view of the research on the subject of new information technologies that has been supported by Unesco and of research conducted outside Unesco's program. The report attempts to single out the main findings of this body of research and to identify new avenues of investigation and action that may be able to contribute to the growth of the research effort. An interdisciplinary approach is taken to the main problem areas in new communication technologies, and the issues discussed range over the fields of economics, law, culture, sociology, and education. The report is divided into eight chapters: (1) Unesco's Activities in the Research Field; (2) Research on New Communication Technologies: The State of the Art; (3) The Explosion of Information Production (audiovisual communication, telematics, and computer networks); (4) The New Legal and Political Issues (legal and institutional dimensions, computer and video piracy, and the law and the concept of information); (5) The Cultural Issues Involved in the New Communication Technologies (cultural imperialism, emergence of new forms of culture, and cultural assimilation of new technologies; (6) The New Technologies in Education (media education, informatics and education, and new distance education technologies); (7) The Social Aspects of the New Technologies; and (8) The Interaction between Technology and Society. A two-part bibliography lists 45 Unesco studies on information technology, and a general section lists more than 250 items. A list of research and Comnet centers concludes the report. (DB)

Book Pedagogical Appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies ICT by West African Educators

Download or read book Pedagogical Appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies ICT by West African Educators written by Kathryn Toure and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2016-08-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West African teachers and professors who are appropriating information and communication technologies (ICT) are making it part and parcel of education and everyday life. In Mali and beyond, they adapt ICT to their milieus and work as cultural agents, mediating between technology and society. They yearn to use ICT to make education more relevant to life, facilitate and enhance African participation in global debates and scholarly production, and evolve how Africa and Africans are projected and perceived. In sum, educators are harnessing ICT for its transformative possibilities. The changes apparent in student-teacher relations (more interactive) and classrooms (more dialogical) suggest that ICT can be a catalyst for pedagogical change, including in document-poor contexts and ones weighed down by legacies of colonialism. Learning from the perspectives and experiences of educators pioneering the use of ICT in education in Africa can inform educational theory, practice and policy and deepen understandings of the concept of appropriation as a process of cultural change.

Book Annuaire Europeen 2000 European Yearbook 2000

Download or read book Annuaire Europeen 2000 European Yearbook 2000 written by Francis Rosensteil and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 1154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2000's most significant international event was, almost certainly, neither political nor military, but scientific - the announcement, in June, that the human genome had been almost totally decoded. Future generations may well see this as a major turning point, opening the way to radical changes in diagnosis, prognosis, and medical treatment. Often compared with the space programme, this vast enterprise still generates misgivings: this new power, which human beings now have, to modify the genetic heritage of living creatures raises fundamentally new ethical questions - and society as a whole will have to find the answers. In fact, the accelerating pace of scientific and technical progress seems to be reviving atavistic anxieties, some rational, others less so. Recent public-health crises, including the mad cow disease' scare, which lasted into 2000, have fuelled these fears. The public's rejection of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) - verging on a crusade in some countries - tells its own story. As regards conflict, 2000 saw the Middle East peace process grind to a halt, and the Intifada resume. In Europe, the situation in Kosovo and Chechnya, both the scenes of fighting in 1999, stayed precarious. Peace and democracy did score some successes, however, particularly in Europe: the centre-left's victory in Croatia, sweeping former President Tudjman's party off the scene, the democratic party's triumph in Bosnia, and the fall of the Milosevic regime in Serbia.
