Using highly disaggregated data for a range of sectors and developing countries we have applied this distinction to micro - as well as macro-economic policy issues. By identifying distinct systems of technology in a multisectoral model of the economy we have been able to quantify certain aspects of those systems within a rigorous conceptual framework. The relationship between income distribution, the choice of technology and its subsequent impact is examined in detail.

Technology and Social Inclusion moves beyond the limited view of haves and have-nots to analyze the different forms of access to information and communication technologies. Drawing on theory from political science, economics, sociology, psychology, communications, education, and linguistics, the book examines the ways in which differing access to technology contributes to social and economic stratification or inclusion. The book takes a global perspective, presenting case studies from developed and developing countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, India, and the United States. A central premise is that, in today's society, the ability to access, adapt, and create knowledge using information and communication technologies is critical to social inclusion. The project group decided early on to focus fIrst on the technological system for factory automation - a relatively mature system of great importance to Swedish industry and in which Sweden has reached a leading position internationally - and then to shift the attention to other systems in various stages of development and with varying Swedish strength.
