Book The Development of Railway Technology in East Asia in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book The Development of Railway Technology in East Asia in Comparative Perspective written by Minoru Sawai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-09 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine the process of railway development in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China from historical and comparative perspectives. Moreover, it discusses and compares the East Asian experiences of railway development with cases in Germany, which was a mainstay of railway development in Europe. After the opening of Japan in the mid-nineteenth century, the country achieved import substitution of locomotives in half a century. This book explores the social capability of Meiji Japan to overtake the advanced countries in railway technology. Parallel with the expansion of the Japanese empire, a large team of engineers constructed and operated the colonial government railways of Taiwan and Korea and the South Manchuria Railway. The book clearly outlines the education and training of these engineers. The management capabilities of the colonial railways and South Manchuria Railway were transferred to the postwar period, and such expertise supported the economic development of each country and region. These dramatic East Asian experiences of railway development are compared with European cases, mainly German railways.

Book The Sound of the Whistle

Download or read book The Sound of the Whistle written by Steven J. Ericson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thorough and detailed study of the development of the Japanese railroad industry during the Meiji period, Steven Ericson explores the economic role of government and the nature of state-business relations during Japan’s modern transformation. Ericson challenges the tendency of current scholarship to minimize the roles of the Japanese government and commercial banks in Meiji industrialization. By providing a fresh perspective on the “strong state/weak state” debate through a detailed analysis of the 1906–1907 railway nationalization, Ericson’s study sheds new light on the Meiji origins of modern Japanese industrial policy and politics, filling a major gap in the available literature on the Meiji political economy.

Book Trains Culture and Mobility

Download or read book Trains Culture and Mobility written by Benjamin Fraser and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trains, Culture and Mobility: Riding the Rails goes beyond textual representations of rail travel to engage an impressive range of political, sociological and urban theory. Taken together, these essays highlight the complexity of the modern experience of train mobility, and its salient relation to a number of cultural discourses. Incorporating traditionally marginal areas of cultural production such as graffiti, museums, architecture or even plunging into the social experience of travel inside the traincar itself, each essay constitutes an attempt to work from the act of riding the train toward questions of much larger significance. Crisscrossing cultures from the New World and Old, from East and West, these essays share a common preoccupation with the way in which trains and railway networks have mapped and re-mapped the contours of both cities and states in the modern period. Bringing together individual and large-scale social practices, this volume traces out the cultural implications of “Riding the Rails.”

Book Navies and Shipbuilding Industries

Download or read book Navies and Shipbuilding Industries written by Michael Lindberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-08-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme running through this book is the mutual dependence of navies and shipbuilding industries. Historically, naval ambitions and the ambitions of industrialists converge, and a symbiosis is born. The technical competence of industry emerges as a key player in determining the effectiveness of navies. That industrial capability, for its part, rests increasingly on the navy as chief customer because progressive specialization renders it more and more unsuited for any other use. These trends are universal, afflicting the relations of all major navies and their industrial suppliers since the dawn of the modern age. They continue to complicate the running of navies today. The book enlarges on this fundamental fact, explaining why the symbiosis emerged and how it is manifested in the contemporary world.

Book Tracks Across Continents Paths Through History

Download or read book Tracks Across Continents Paths Through History written by Douglas J. Puffert and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A standard track gauge—the distance between the two rails—enables connecting railway lines to exchange traffic. But despite the benefits of standardization, early North American railways used six different gauges extensively, and even today breaks of gauge at national borders and within such countries as India and Australia are expensive burdens on commerce. In Tracks across Continents, Paths through History, Douglas J. Puffert offers a global history of railway track gauge, examining early choices and the dynamic process of diversity and standardization that resulted. Drawing on the economic theory of path dependence, and grounded in economic, technical, and institutional realities, this innovative volume traces how early historical events, and even idiosyncratic personalities, have affected choices of gauge ever since, despite changing technology and understandings of what gauge is optimal. Puffert also uses this history to develop new insights in the theory of path dependence. Tracks across Continents, Paths through History will be essential reading for anyone interested in how history and economics inform each other.

Divided into eight historical stages, their survey traces the development of road, river, coastal and rail transport.
