Book Stochastic Frontier Analysis

Download or read book Stochastic Frontier Analysis written by Subal C. Kumbhakar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern textbook presentations of production economics typically treat producers as successful optimizers. Conventional econometric practice has generally followed this paradigm, and least squares based regression techniques have been used to estimate production, cost, profit and other functions. In such a framework deviations from maximum output, from minimum cost and cost minimizing input demands, and from maximum profit and profit maximizing output supplies and input demands, are attributed exclusively to random statistical noise. However casual empiricism and the business press both make persuasive cases for the argument that, although producers may indeed attempt to optimize, they do not always succeed. This book develops econometric techniques for the estimation of production, cost and profit frontiers, and for the estimation of the technical and economic efficiency with which producers approach these frontiers. Since these frontiers envelop rather than intersect the data, and since the authors continue to maintain the traditional econometric belief in the presence of external forces contributing to random statistical noise, the work is titled Stochastic Frontier Analysis.

Book Efficiency Analysis of NZ Dairy Farming and the Issue of Climate Change Policy

Download or read book Efficiency Analysis of NZ Dairy Farming and the Issue of Climate Change Policy written by Nan Jiang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dairy industry is one of the most important and influential agricultural sector in New Zealand. Ensuring and enhancing the industry's productivity and efficiency represent a fundamental issue in New Zealand economic growth. September 2007, the NZ Labour Government proposed an Emission Trading Scheme as a way to comply with its Kyoto obligation, and it is the first country in the world that brings agricultural sector in. Given the emission intensive nature of dairy production, the industry is facing substantial increases in production costs and reduction in payout. The efficiency performance of dairy farming might also be affected as a result of changing farming practices. The overall objective of the thesis is to analyze the efficiency performance of NZ dairy farming, with implications regarding the climate change issue. Stochastic frontier analysis is applied to a panel of NZ dairy farms in 1998/99-2006/07. The structures of the existing production technology, technological change over time, and difference between South Island and North Island dairy farming are investigated within this stochastic frontier framework. An input efficiency measure is defined and evaluated at the expected cost minimizing input bundle. If the efficiency performance for emission intensive inputs could be improved, dairy farms will decrease their emissions without loss of production or additional costs. This input efficiency measure therefore allows for the combination of a farm's environmental pressure with its economic performance. Finally, the likely impacts of the ETS on dairy industry are discussed through an analysis regarding the point of obligation issue, and an illustration of changing farming practices when fertilizer price goes up as a result of emission charges.

Book Determinants of Technical Efficiency Among Dairy Farms in Wisconsin

Download or read book Determinants of Technical Efficiency Among Dairy Farms in Wisconsin written by Victor E. Cabrera and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US dairy sector is facing structural changes including a geographical shift in dairy production and a tendency toward the implementation of more intensive production systems. These changes might significantly affect farm efficiency, profitability, and the long-term economic sustainability of the dairy sector, especially in more traditional dairy production areas. Consequently, the goal of this study was to examine the effect of practices commonly used by dairy farmers and the effect of intensification on the performance of the farms. We used a sample of 273 Wisconsin dairy farms to estimate a stochastic production frontier simultaneously with a technical inefficiency model. The empirical analysis showed that at a commercial level the administration of bovine somatotropin hormone to lactating cows increased milk production. In addition, we found that production exhibits constant returns to scale and that farm efficiency is positively related to farm intensification, the level of contribution of family labor in the farm activities, the use of a total mixed ration feeding system, and milking frequency.

It is written for the user and potential user of multivariate techniques as well as for students coming to the subject for the first time. The author's emphasis is problem-orientated and he is at pains to stress geometrical intuition in preference to algebraic manipulation. Mathematical sections that are not essential for a practical understanding of the techniques are clearly indicated so that they may be skipped by the non-specialist. Discrete and mixed variable techniques are presented as well as continuous variable techniques to give a comprehensive coverage of the subject. This updated edition includes a new appendix which traces developments that have taken place in the years since the publication of the first edition and which clarifies some issues raised by readers of the original text. References to about 60 recent books and articles supplement the material in this appendix. Overall, this volume provides an up-to-date and readable practical account of the subject, both for students of statistics and for research workers in subjects as diverse as anthropology, education, industry, medicine and taxonomy. The new edition includes a survey of the most recent developments in the subject.

Book Technical Efficiency of Dairy Farms with and Without Sensors

Download or read book Technical Efficiency of Dairy Farms with and Without Sensors written by T.I. Kartopawiro and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent years the most common development that can be noticed is the development and increase of the use of sensors in dairy farming. With the use of sensors parameters and indicators of an individual dairy cow can be measured and help the farmer detect estrus, lameness, clinical mastitis, etc. Several sensors, such as the sensors to detect mastitis, are integrated on an automatic milking system (AMS). The use of sensors on a farm requires a different management, to improve cow management, and has a corresponding change in inputs and outputs. The main inputs which the use of sensors can possibly affect are labor costs, animal health costs and available capital. Since the use and development of sensors is increasing, an urge has grown for a clear analysis of the economic value of a sensor system. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate and compare the Technical Efficiency of dairy farms with and without sensors.
